We sat down with Claudia Piazza from Phrased Differently, best known for her work with Little Mix, Doja Cat, Kygo and Calvin Harris. She explained to us how she, an A&R, discovers artists, musicians and songwriters and pairs them with the right team to make a hit song.

I'm glad you posted this video. That being said, what she's describing is a kind of a sad state of where music is. Major artists bid for songs created by talented people who go un-named, while the un-talented stand in the forefront and get the credit, all the while changing it up to sound generic. This is why real artists get left behind.

Much easier for A&R to "find" a Hit song than to break a new Artist - I know this first hand - when I pitched my very first song to A&R I was asked a whole lot of questions by one Rep who stated he wasn't interested in the song - and yet seemed very interested in how I was promoting my music...fast forward a bout a year and low and behold I hear a song on the radio that sounds VERY close to the song I submitted. The song went on to be this Bands only hit. Welcome to the Music Business.
can you not get legal matters into this? since you have a recording of your song, it’s got copyright? only asking as i had a&r get in touch with me and i’ve sent 2 demos but now they’ve gone cold on me. i’m worried i might experience what you have. luckily i haven’t sent my best work, and the same demos are public to listen. if i saw them get copyrighted i’d go in hard on the a&r guy
@@anoushkanoller6909 This was 20 years ago and I didn't have the protections I do now - even then copyright only goes so far. If you get ripped off - I hope you don't, they won't copy the song verbatim, they'll change just enough to cry foul. Good luck.

Copywrite it first, or put it up on Soundcloud on a private link so you can prove you had it before you submitted it to them

How do you send them a track? I have had dealings with scammers claiming to be from A&R Records. So i am a bit hesitant of sending my music to folk.

My Son Marlee J is a new hip hop artist and he writes his own songs. He also does different Genres. But I don’t think he would ever want to sell his songs because he would want it to be his. Is it hard for most writers to do this?

I'm sure this lady knows more than me but if a writer has billions of good songs in them if they can write one good one then how come even the best of writers are lucky to have a handful of truly great songs? Personally i think we all have a few moments of greatness in us and we should be careful with our songs not see them as throw away paper plates.

So a quick question. The fact that I have been told from record labels if you use, for example, a vocal from Splice. Most labels will not accept this. However, an example of this is 'Mentis - Excuses' or 'Shane Codd - Get out of my head'. These tracks are massive hits in the UK but the vocals are from Splice 🤔 I don't know what to believe! I'm not knocking the artist don't get me wrong but this is where you can see the cracks within the music industry, it's almost pure luck that they have got where they are. Or something else entirely. The first tracks that they brought out were hits, how? 😑

She’s a really nice person but this is exactly what’s wrong with music. Far to many in house songwriters feeding the machine just to make a few quid, regurgitating the same old crap, stifling creativity and the natural evolution of music. Not nearly enough original bands in the mix with fresh ideas and genuine passion. So sad.
