- Even before the global success of Barbie, Greta Gerwig had established herself as a filmmaker with distinctive humour, an authentic voice and a unique and personal cinematic vision.
Gerwig’s early films include the indie classics Hannah Takes the Stairs, which she co-wrote and stars in, and Nights and Weekends, which she co-directed, co-wrote, co-produced and stars in, before her breakout in Noah Baumbach’s film Greenberg opposite Ben Stiller.
She followed up the collaboration with Baumbach co-writing and starring in the critically acclaimed, Frances Ha, as well as Mistress America, and they have continued their creative partnership with Gerwig starring in Baumbach’s most recent film, White Noise.
Her additional acclaimed performances include standout roles in Jackie and 20th Century Women. Gerwig made her solo feature debut as writer/director of Lady Bird, which was nominated for the Academy Award and the BAFTA for Best Picture. With the film, Gerwig also became the fifth woman nominated for an Oscar for Best Director and earned Oscar and BAFTA nominations for Best Screenplay.
Her second film, also nominated for multiple Oscar and BAFTA awards including Best Picture, was an inventive, emotionally rich adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.
Now with Barbie, a wholly original, critically acclaimed, worldwide phenomenon co-written with Baumbach, the filmmaker has delivered one of the most unique filmgoing experiences in years.

As someone who grew up with a stutter and speech impediment, it’s so refreshing to hear someone speak both authentically and eloquently, openly acknowledging she’s nervous and carrying on. One of the many things I appreciate about Greta and feel empowered by when I hear her speak about her craft.
Is it a stutter? I thought she was just nervous. She is absolutely adorable, though.
It's so refreshing to hear someone talk about their "career" in a way that doesn't portray it like "I always knew this is what I wanted and I did everything to get there" but just as an authentic path of development and moment-by-moment decision-making. Especially coming from someone as successful as Greta Gerwig. I find it quite debilitating to hear older people give advice like "you have decide what you want to do and then focus on just that one thing" because I often think that's something they are saying with a sort of partially blinded hindsight, when really it's much more healthy to live in the moment and make decisions as you go along depending on how your passions and interests shift.
The creator of Succession being the interviewer is crazy .
I was wondering where I knew him from. This is so random that I didn't make the connection lol
I'm so glad this popped up right away on my youtube feed. This was such a great interview, with great questions and even better answers. Greta Gerwig is incredible.
😍 Glad you enjoyed the interview!
@@britishfilminstitutePeople with my Autism condition Mrs Greta Gerwig can do anything. Examples Elon Musk his son Saxon Musk Sia and Chris Fischer Amy Schumers husband. Allow me to introduce myself to you Mrs Gerwig. My name is Mr Jonathan Trauner. I'll turn 30 years old in Jerusalem Israel on May 15th 2024 next month. I am Israeli and Jewish. I work for the high tech company Mobileye of Jerusalem. On June 18th 2023 I got hit by a huge tall tour bus in Jerusalem next to Mobileyes newest building. I only broke my left collarbone. EGOT win here I come. I fully recovered by the way Greta and Noah. My bones no longer broken. I am a poet and performing artist too
I had to make sure I read that right cuz Succession creator Jesse Armstrong could never but here we are and I'm overjoyed that these two brilliant artists have come together for this. What an incredible year it's been for both of them. Much love.
I never thought the creator of Succession would interview the director of Barbie but here we are and i'm so happy for both of them
“ I had day jobs for a long time… at least until I was 26” just kill me now
Joe Pesci had day jobs until 40
Just an utterly delightful human who happens to be one of the most talented and best directors we have today. I adore her and her willingness to always be her self. Even if shes aware she's nervous. Great conversation with another fabulous and one of the best writers we have in Jessie Armstrong! Loved this. New subscriber!
❤️
Two of my favorite creators! My fantasy version would have had them interviewing each other. "Jesse, how do you manage to write such kickass older female characters?" Helpful: the pain of writing in contrast with the occasional joy of having written.
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!! TURN IT UP!!!
“you’re interested in girls” LMAOOO I love her sm 😂
MY 2 FAVOURITE ENTERTAINMENT MAKERS TALKING FOR AN HOUR GOD YOU HAVE ANSWERED MY PRAYERS

Jesse's laugh and Greta's authenticity. That is all.

THIS IS ALREADY A GREAT INTERVIEW 💖
They picked THE SCENE from little women that plays on a loop in my head
She is soooo smart.
Great talk, thank you
Greta is such an inspiration! She’s so authentic and down to earth. ❤
I've been waiting for this! :D
Muchas gracias por compartir esto! Un tesoro.

she’s so delightful and smart
I love Greta Gerwig, i love both lady brid 2017 and litte women of her version 2019.
She’s so lovely
She’s a adorable 😂 have loved her since her work in Lady Bird
YES
Finally! 😻
interesting chat thanks
Greta Gerwig shes one of my favorite filmmaker Because not only just how brilliant as a Director she is, I also love her seductive body and acting performance in Nights and Weekends this film !
Love greta❤️
Not to be rude but I always watch Greta interviews on 1.5.
Wow, so that’s what genius sounds like. Very very inspiring.
Finding your community and looking for your angels
I think they'll come
❤
Greta is such a talented person, with a sublime imagination. I just find it very painful to watch her give this interview, because it is like she is answering questions through a panic attack episode, she is almost breathless, gasping for air. I saw her giving interviews before, obviously she can be relaxed. Maybe giving interviews in front of audience is daunting. You are 'sublime' Greta, as Ken says, no need to worry about anything, especially not about Brits.
She also an good actor.
NINA
There aren’t many female director. But there is Greta.❤
Kinuyo Tanaka, Jane Campion, Allison Anders, Mary Harron, Kristine Peterson, Naoko Yamada, Kathryn Bigelow
All of them 3588541247898643 of times better than the Barbie girl
Greta is a true film visionary! The person who lit her in this interview, not so much! Sorry, but her face is half in shadow! Why?
33:53 he very quickly regretted those poor choice of words 😂
If Greta was starring in succession I’d see her as Kendal’s crush, but she was really into Logan. Or Shiv.
Greta Gerwig sounds like she went to Band Camp.
She and Allyson Hannigan sound soooooooooooooo alike, it's creepy.
But Alyson is from Georgia, like, from the other side of the country @@alexchernandez88
nice to notice how Greta's sensitivity even manages to change a slightly snobby interviewer rephrasing his questions towards more inner honesty.
a slightly snobby interviewer? You mean creator of many great comedy shows.
Snobby because british? Lol makes sense
Has this woman ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever said "no" to an interview?
Is she really that insecure? ...I mean this stuttering has got to stop. She reminds me of Woody Allen with her constant halts and hesitations.
She's like that in every interview. I watch her on 1.5.
It's called a speech impediment; it's not something she can just "stop". Seems you skipped the empathy queue.
She probably plays it up like Dan Harmon
I love her, but my god I loathed Barbie.
no offence to Greta ( Little Women is one of my favourite movies) but this should be the other way around
Let her do one movie without her hubby's support - then maybe take her seriously. Ever heard of a male director who needed technical support from his wife to make a movie?
george lucas
She wrote and made 2 films by herself, Lady Bird and Little Women and they were both nominated for Oscars
It’s called a creative partnership lmao. Wow that pathetic Martin scorsese, always relying on Thelma Schoonmaker to fix his films, right?
You asked, "Ever heard of a male director who needed technical support from his wife to make a movie/" The answer is yes, Noah Baumbach, for one.
People seemed to take Alfred Hitchcock quite seriously, despite his wife, the editor and screenwriter, Alma Reville, being his most frequent collaborator. What a loser, eh?
