      Jackie,
BLM is not about about saying Black Lives Matter too. I’ve tried to propose that various times and I have gotten shot down hard by BLM advocates. The reason they don’t want it changed - to avoid confusion - is because BLM is specifically about a political movement. I suggest you got over to the official BLM website and see what their beliefs are and what political agendas they are trying to implement. That’s why they are so hostile to BLMToo. Check out the comments section in Father Mike’s video.
Also, if we are going to listen, we need to listen to both sides, not just the loudest one. I suggest some CZcams videos on so called “Institutional Racism” by Colman Hughes, Brandon Tatum, and Thomas Sowell to name just a few.

If we speak about this too abstractly and don't directly deal with the problems of the marxist ideology (i.e. inherently anticatholic) behind the 'critical studies' viewpoint that is behind BLM, then catholic will feel they are somehow racist - the whole movement lends towards scruples. The moral issue is not 'being a racist' or not, the moral issues, have to do with your everyday life, the concrete loving of every person. If you're teaching your children 'not to be racist', then you're just acting as political activist spreading ideology - as pope Francis points out, that's not Christian. What matters is that you make ACTIONS of love towards every person you meet (but particularly those in your family and those who are close to, according to St Thomas Aquinas) regardless of how you feel. It's okay to have a deep aversion towards people who are different from you, as long as that is not what you ACT on. You surrender those inclinations to God in weakness, ask for the grace to do His will and then make the act (in word or action) in Charity (love of God).
So please don't come to confession and confess to 'being racist' or 'not doing enough about racism.' Confess a racist word or action, confess lack of charity in particular concrete actions, and then seek with God's help to be faithful in the little things of your life.
For 98% of people in the US "Racism" is out of your control. Surrender it to God, pray for the grace to do the next right thing in front of you and stop worrying about it.

The difficulty in addressing something like the point made in the 5:00 mark is something difficult. I am a brown man and went to a predominantly white catholic elementary school. At times I would feel isolated because I didn't have close friends and I would feel as though people were doing it because I'm Indian. However this is a major assumption and it shows my pride. I feel isolated also whenever I am in ministry as I am a traditionally minded Catholic in a Charismatic Ministry (Anointing Fire Catholic Youth Ministry). Is this cause they hate traditional Catholics, I would say no it mostly my inability to communicate well with others. Moral of this post is to see this problem as interior problems cause we can't understand the intentions of others to that clear of a degree unless we have a special charism.

Hi friend, this is an interesting and important point you made and I agree with this. As a white person I have felt the same way because I grew up with a lot of black people in my school and I wanted to be included but felt like I was not welcome. I also have communication problems, my pride is a problem too. But there is more than one solid type of pride. The type of pride I deal with most is the pride of believing it is all my fault and I’m not good enough and I’m the person in the wrong and not others too. I had over a thousand people in my school and there were so many ethnicities and types of people with different religions and backgrounds. And I was excluded and a loner. Granted a lot of things were also happening in my life, but that is another story. I just wanted to say that I was wounded by by rejection when I was younger and when I was growing older. It’s not just you that is at fault my dear friend. It takes two to tango! And I just wanted to let you know that you are good and not alone and that Jesus was rejected too and he loves you and is gonna heal you. Blessings to you!!!

I'm going to be one of those Catholics who'll say something controversial.
The current situation in the U.S. is not a racial issue. It's an issue about police practices and the fault of the citizenry for not obeying the law.
The officer MAY be racist but he doesn't make any claims to be. This by no means justifies his actions.
On the other hand, the victim was also a criminal. If he wasn't rioting in the first place this situation wouldn't have occurred.
Having said that, they're both human beings who made mistakes.
God IS justice! "Racial" justice is nothing more than an adjective attached to the word justice to formulate a secular argument.

That's the problematic mindset as you have stated. It's not about "the system" it's about individuals taking responsibility.
When people think it's the "systems" fault then the idea of revolution comes into one's head. The Chinese Communists thought "the system" was the fault and they killed over 45 million people to correct that system. Now look where they are: starting pandemics.
Everyone needs to take personal responsibility for their actions. A "system" is only an excuse to riot, loot and rampage.

I'm not from this country, but living here I experienced all of this such as being scared when I drive, when I walk outside, in stores; I couldn't even jog outside during the pandemic so that I don't get shot but I saw other Christian that didn't care about that.

So yes I have felt discriminated against as well it doesn’t only happen to black America & I know personally about a white teenage girl who had to attend a 95 % dominated black school because of the school boundaries & she recorded an bulling incident that happen to her at that particular school . It wasn’t very nice to say the least . And yet signs are posted bullying will not be tolerated , what a joke . From the recording the student that was bullying her & the other white girl in that classroom , had no respect for the teacher as well . The teacher ended up doing nothing about it . The bullied teen ( who was a straight A student when she started that school year was afraid every day to go to school , for fear of retaliation . Her grades & self esteem went down dramatically . She attended classes on line the following year but her self esteem & grades continued to suffer. She use to be very outgoing now she has become an introvert with low self esteem & no motivation . I believe that it’s groups of people that cause trouble for if it is only one on one a situation is better handled but it a person can get a group behind them, that’s when things escalate & makes the situation that shouldn’t happen worse. When a group stands behind someone who wrongs someone the person who is bullying someone feels empowered & privileged & carries into their adulthood , & the bullied individual suffers the rest of their life .

I believe the biggest reason that rioting is not happening on the same scale up here in Canada is our nation just hasn't been a nation for as long as the U.S. has been one while there are the same social problems here common to man too. Our poor neighbourhoods are not as large and numerous only because our nation has less people per square Canadian mile over all while a greater percentage of people up here instread of having enough energy and time to go out to do any peaceful protesting in support of those who are still suffering from racism in dead end jobs and neighborhoods where they are seeing their young people fall prey to human trafficking or dying young while barely surviving are not only because by the time they get home from work they are too exhausted to while being thankful that there will probable be a'free' hospittal bed and probable'free' universal standardized medical treatment for them there soon enough when they get sick next too while being confident that their grandkids will get seen by a doctor soon enough with fever too if they come down with COVID-19 [to prevent a brain damaging fever from making them a burden to all for the rest of their lives] or they are stuck at home past a certain age without a job and after years of trying to find one have given up trying to hold down even a volunteer job right now during a pandemic becuase along with all of the increase in panic about germs there seems to be more of spill over generalized anxiety about everything else too and they want to stay as far away from any possilbe trouble makers who happen to be around after seeing what started happening south of our border while continuing to hope things will turn around enough so they can contribute more to a better life for the next generation too. It is going to be interesting for all to see if universal health care can keep on making a difference enough for us Canadians to avoid seeing the same happening up here from time to time in the future as our population gets denser per mile. I want to do everything in my power to help ensure that universal health care continues up here in that hope. However how can universal health care work if part of it is broken? I could never forgive myself if I didn't speak out about it if I can see a part of it that is broken.

At the end of the day, I think Caucasian people do have this unconscious bias that they are of far superior intelligence, appearance and wealth that they tend to have this air of arrogance when dealing with minorities yet don't think that this is at all racism and that its totally acceptable (again even in the churches I attend and groups I partake in where I am told racism is exaggerated and doesn't exist). I think its fair to say that telling an Asian-American to "get away and go home" when I sat down for mass during the coronavirus pandemic yet brownnosing to the priest about how amazing and beautiful the Italian language and culture is is not at all racist, right? I think the church could do better and I think this is partially the reason why the RCC is having to deal with dwindling numbers of parishioners state-side.

A big issue imo is the Catholic Church in many areas has abandoned the black community. I know in New York City most of the Catholic Churches in the black communities are closed or basically cater to the Hispanic/Latino communities. There is obviously nothing wrong with hispanic churches, but if these parishes were converting the population around them a lot of this violence wouldn’t be happening. Most of the negative marks of “the hood” or “the ghetto” would go away if only we Catholics were going out and converting. I’ve been told “ I don’t know why you are Catholic, that’s not a religion that cares about black people.” And “you should convert to Islam because Muslims support the black family”. It shouldn’t be so. The Catholic Church is for everyone, we just aren’t making that clear.

This isn’t surprising since many came from evangelical backgrounds - especially Pentecostal and Baptist - which have notoriety for being super Anti-Catholic. From personal experience, it is exceedingly difficult to convert or speak to someone about the Church when they have been raised that way.

Hello saints-in-the making (that’s you, comment scroller haha)!!
I think about racism similar to how I think about original sin. Because of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, sin entered the world and was handed down. Even innocent babies who never chose to do anything wrong are born into the state of original sin-separation from God. Most people are familiar with the concept of racism as an action (sin of commission) but not as familiar with the concept as a structure we inherit and can combat by cooperating with building up the Kingdom of Heaven. Yeah, slavery may have happened “a long time ago,” but so did the Fall. We live with the effects and consequences, and have to learn goodness through our Lord and His Church. Just because we haven’t personally experienced the effects of racism doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. There are certainly a lot of other factors at play apart from race that are important to social justice, but the wisdom of the Church and the experience of many of our black brothers and sisters tell us that it is a factor. It’s ok to take that seriously without having to align with other things that get thrown into the mix (usually along political lines). For instance, one can confidently say, “Black Lives Matter” and fully mean it without agreeing with everything the formal movement’s leaders believe. I think striving to be authentically Catholic will not land us neatly in any political camp. I’m grateful to Ascension Presents for talking about this!

    • @coralys2537
      @coralys2537 Před 4 lety +1

@Mike Cranston Sure. You may be referring to what the Catechism of the Catholic Church # 110 states: "In order to discover the sacred authors' intention, the reader must take into account the conditions of their time and culture, the literary genres in use at that time, and the modes of feeling, speaking and narrating then current. 'For the fact is that truth is differently presented and expressed in the various types of historical writing, in prophetical and poetical texts, and in other forms of literary expression.'"
Just because something is not "literal" does not mean it is not "true." I am extending what I understand to be the moral truth of Genesis to this present situation; whether the story of Adam and Eve is "literally" true or not by current historical standards does not undermine the moral truths it reveals as the inspired word of the living God.
May the love and peace of Jesus surround you (and me!). :)

Yes, it's sad that the media oftentimes creates unnecessary division. I think what's tricky about these issues is that they hardly ever have one source or explanation. Although I do view this as a systemic racism problem at least in part, you and I share a lot of common ground--probably more agreement than disagreement--regarding authority overreach and police brutality (the call to serve as a police officer is an important one but like all other important positions embued with authority, accountability and appropriate stewardship are essential). If that can be addressed well, then I think it will get us at least part of the way to greater justice, with God's help.

First, I so appreciate Bobby and Jackie tackling this subject. But as a Latina, tbh, there is very little representation among ascension’s “personalities/presenters” who are people of color. Their major personalities are mostly white. I can think of Fr. Josh as the face of color i see. Our big catholic media companies have to make an effort too. Otherwise it’s just performative activism.

    • @Nick-N-Plus-Infinity
      @Nick-N-Plus-Infinity Před 4 lety +1

Are you implying that Catholic media has to actively seek out people of all different colours for you to be satisfied? Is to many 'white' people a problem for you? Is it not just possible that in a predominantly white country that the representation in media will reflect that (and why would that be a bad thing?).
If I moved to a different country where I was the minority I would not expect to see, nor demand to see my race reflected in their media. In fact it's a little racist and egotistical to do so in my humble opinion.
If all of Catholic media was Chinese or any other race it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. We've to judge people by the content of their character not their skin colour. I mean as Catholics this is basics, regardless of skin colour we're all God's children together.
I find people today are looking for racism under every rock. And if that's what you're constantly looking for you will only see the world through that distorted lens.
I could agree with you more if you were arguing for more cultures to be represented in Catholic media. Given the rich traditions of our other Catholic brothers and sisters from around the world in various different countries, that would only be a good thing (although Catholic media already does this pretty well in the US) to learn how people from different Catholic cultures share and experience their faith through their cultural traditions.
But to get back to my point, in a predominantly white country the media will naturally reflect that. That is not racism. Every country naturally does that.
You shouldn't care what the colour of skin is of the person who preaches God's word, and if you're finding yourself preoccupied with that then you're missing the point altogether. Just my thoughts.
      God bless

We are the universal church. We must do more to live up to this claim in our local communities.
We must be actively reaching out, engaging, loving, and inviting people from other racial and cultural backgrounds into our parishes. We need to acknowledge and celebrate cultural differences.
How many people of color are in your RCIA class? How engaged with local minority groups is your parish or diocese? How many people of color are applying to your local Catholic schools? How many are admitted? How can we increase the number of people of color who apply for, are accepted, and attend our Catholic schools? Do we remember how to properly pronounce names that are unfamiliar or strange to us? When we serve alongside members of other cultural groups, do we avoid being patronizing? Do we ask the same type questions we would ask other white parishioners (how is the family, how's work, how's school, what have you been working on these days, etc.)?
There's a lot of ways we in the Church can actively work against systematic racism. The phrase "systematic racism" or "institutional racism" means the divisiveness that is created by our inherent lack of communion with people from other racial, cultural, and ethnic groups. It does not have to be a deliberate act of will, but division between people is always a devilish work. It's in our nature to not like people we don't spend time with. If we don't spend time with people from other cultural groups, they will seem strange and dangerous. They are not. They are strangers in a strange land. We must invite these brothers and sisters to the table, to our events, to our parish, to our service, to be in communion with us.
We must be the ones to extend that invitation. We as Catholics in the USA are perhaps the largest group and the one most capable of making a massive impact in this area. We claim to be the "universal" church. It's on our shoulders to live up to that claim. We must do more.
