How to install brass compression fitting:
¼ inch OD size nut is standard for refrigerator waterlines.
1. cut the plastic water line straight down. The cut end shouldn’t be at an angle. I find using a razor blade works best.
2. Compression fitting kit is comprised of a nut, a tube insert, and a compression sleeve.
3. Pull the tube through the nut, insert the compression sleeve through the tube, then put the tube insert inside the tube.
4. push up the compression sleeve and the nut up so that you can screw the nut onto water valve connection. This water valve may be located inside the cabinet under the kitchen sink. Preferably your valve for the waterline is right behind the refrigerator.
5. Make sure the fittings are well aligned and then screw on the nut with your fingers and make sure the nut gets finger tightened. Then use a wrench to make about a couple of quarter turns. Use two wrenches, one to hold onto the nut at the valve and another to turn the nut on the tube.
6. If water is leaking when you turn on the valve, tighten the nut some more. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN WITH A TOOL because if you overtighten, you might irreversibly damage the sleeve and cause a leak that cannot be fixed, which means you’d need to buy new parts and start all over again. Make a couple of more quarter turns until there is no more leaking.
7. Stop turning the nut when the leak has stopped.
Here’s another tip, if you have plastic tubing for your waterline and your water valve is not located behind the fridge, and you are buying a new refrigerator from Home Depot or Lowe’s, don’t bother purchasing a brand new hose that that they make you buy as a requirement for having them install the fridge. That’s because they won’t do the installation unless your existing waterline looks like this. What they mean by installation involves a guy connecting the new hose to your water valve and to the refrigerator, But the installation guys have been instructed not to touch let alone take off your existing water line if it is made of plastic. Well, you can easily do the refrigerator installation yourself with a wrench. But then again, If there is nothing wrong with your existing water line, there is no reason you need to buy and install a new one. And don’t worry, even if they don’t do the installation, they will still bring the fridge inside and assemble it completely, which is part of the delivery service.
