  • In this video we will be sharing with you our very first olive harvest of the trees that came with our property and from our most recent purchase! We harvest 27 trees and yield about 8 gallons (just over 25 litres) of fresh pressed olive oil!!

Ill glady help you harvest next year if needed. As a child growing up as first generation italian i learned the process of making wine and olive oil from my parents right here in Washington State fifty years the old fashioned way. Dad would be 101 today and moms still yelling orders at 92. Some things you never forget.

We would love to have you help us, it's really a fun few days although the work is harder than people realize. Our neighbor is an old farmer who does exactly that, make his own wine and presses his own oil (among many other things). You'd feel like you went back to your childhood if you saw him I'm sure.

Absolutely love olive trees, olives and their oil ever since I can remember but after my first trip to Europe, Greece, 1996, I knew I had to live in an olive growing region. I distinctly remember sitting on a shaded balcony every day just before siesta, eating a bowl of olives. After moving to Spain in 2006, I was overjoyed to eat olives every day as well as olive oil. We not only had olive trees in a yard, but also lemon, fig, pepper and an array of herbs. After I moved out of the city in China and had my own garden, I decided to buy a couple of baby olive trees. That’s when I learned that they actually have blossoms. Unfortunately, they are still too young to produce olives and I have to move them indoors due to the cold winters. Criteria for my house in Europe is a garden big enough for at least one olive tree so I’m so jealous that you have your very own olive grove now.

I've been thinking of moving to northern california but the more I watch videos based in Italy and the more i hear fro Americans how amazing life is out there, the more I'm inclined to chuck the idea of moving to the expensive california! We used Unicredit here in Umbria, not sure where your house is and if Unicredit has branches over there but it's worth a try. Beware that for non-residents all banks charge relatively astronomical fees (about 30 euro per month) so definitely look into options like Revolut. We do not have a Revolut account (never have had one either) but it seems to be popular. Once you become a resident the monthly fees drop significantly to about 10 euro.

These properties should only be sold to other Italians of those in Italy or from countries where themselves or their parents and grand parents emigrated to decades ago and who want to live in Italy and not to foreigners. I hope that the new government will make it harder for foreigners to live in Italy and buy properties. And even being a EU Citizen a person must find a job within three months or demonstrate that he/she has sufficient moneys to self support.

All very good points. Trouble these days is the younger italians want to live in the cities and don't particularly want to be responsible for harvesting olives. That's why they are selling houses for 1 euro, the younger generations have left. As for Stijn, who is an EU citizen and who just became an Italian resident this week, is very interested in perma culture and basically lives on his new olive grove property. Something this property needed, someone to love it and bring it back to life. I, Debbie am of italian descent, my great grandparents immigrated to America in the early 1900's from Sicily. And we live here!
