The way russell crowe portrays a dying man in this movie is so beautiful! it gets me every time, you can almost see the afterlife in his eyes!
That scene at the end was one of the most moving scenes I can remember in any movie!

Great insight into David's character, that he has in the past been willing to watch hallmark movies and other genres that may not appeal to him. Open minded, selfless family man. Toni's apology was the sweetest thing and her promise to be less resistant to his movie suggestions in the future.
They won't all be as good as Gladiator of course but it's important to be open to experience different genres and take away the themes and messages on offer.

Something I think a lot of people miss is when Maximus says “the time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end… Highness.” Highness was a term used mainly for children who most would assume would take the throne at some point. Caesar is the term used to address the actual emperor at that time. The fact that Maximus calls him Highness shows that he in no way views Commodus as true emperor.

That was a good analysis of the movie. One of the themes the movie explores is the epitomized masculine character in Maximus, and it uses Commodus as his character foil. Where Commodus is cowardly, greedy, power hungry, egotistical, self serving, and incestuous, Maximus is brave, noble, selfless, duty bound, religious, and loyal to his wife, even in death. Commodus presents a false image that he is a warrior because knows how to fight, but when the army faced the Germanic tribes, he was hidden in an armored wagon far from the front lines as Maximus led the charge. Maximus tried to deny Marcus Aurelius' offer of the throne, while Commodus was willing to kill for it. From this point, their levels of status in society are reversed - Commodus assumes rule over all of Rome as Caesar, while Maximus loses his command, title, land, wealth, family, and identity, becoming a slave whose purpose is to kill and die for entertainment. Here, he accepts his inevitable death, believing there is nothing he can do to redeem his situation until he is approached by Lucilla to supplant Commodus and restore Rome. He merits the loyalty and obedience of his fellow gladiators, who immediately gravitate toward him due to his natural abilities as a leader and demonstrated ability to fight. His redemption and Commodus' fall demonstrate that a man is not the resultant of his circumstances in life; he is guided by his conscience at all times, and is in complete control of himself.
To your question of why he wasn't helped in the end: for the purposes of the story, his death was the end of his character arc. He had done everything he felt he needed to, getting vengeance for his family's murder and fulfilling what Marcus Aurelius had asked of him. He had no more that he needed to do, and he was ready to die and be reunited to his family. Lucilla knew he did not want to keep living without them and respected this. This story also takes place in the late 2nd Century A.D., when first aid and medicine were not very well developed yet. He had already lost a good deal of blood, and had received mortal wounds, which was apparent to everyone. There simply wasn't much that could be done for him at that point besides to be kept comfortable.
I think that Gladiator is one of the best stories of all time, and it will always be one of my favorites. There is a lot of stoic influence - if you read Meditations by the real Marcus Aurelius, you'll see his influence all over this movie.

Great reaction to a great film. It won the Oscar for best picture, and Russell Crowe won for best actor. Back then, he couldn’t make a bad movie. I would also suggest “Master and Commander: Far Side Of The World”, and especially “Cinderella Man”, two other excellent movies with Crowe. I think Toni would really love Cinderella Man. Subscribed.

This was the first film I saw Joaquin Phoenix in too. The first time I saw Russell Crowe was as Bud White in LA Confidential, which is another of the great movies.

The crowd answers the unasked question, Shall he live, or die, by shouting LIVE, LIVE! The thumb goes up, and he lives. That is the way it is done for films set in this period. In the real Roman Colosseum, the question was the opposite, "Should he die?". So, then, when the thumb went up, it meant that he died. If the thumb went down, he lived.

This is still my favorite movie of all time and every reaction I've seen for Gladiator has been amazing, the one film I wish I could have seen in theaters but I was 9 when it came out. The ending for me has the most sad but peaceful satisfaction finish ever to a film. I'm glad Toni liked it, because when I showed this one to my fiance she was just like ehh and it still hurts lol.

He had made 8mm home movies of his travels and did make one of his tour of the Colosseum. I remember him showing us the films when we were very young.
I'm sure he would have loved to have seen this movie and it's recreation of the Colosseum in all it's glory.

44:02 You’re referring to Juba (the black slave) portrayed by Djimon Hounsou. He’s a Beninese actor who played the part of Solomon Vandy in ‘Blood Diamond’ with Leonardo Dicaprio. That’s another movie that you guys should react to on the channel. It’s probably among Dicaprio’s top 3 best performances ever and a fantastic movie.
The actor who plays the slave trader is British actor Oliver Reed. This was Reed’s last film. He died while the movie was still in production. It is said that he and Russell Crowe didn’t get along. Oliver Reed played the role of Italian General Rodolfo Graziani in the film ‘Omar Mukhtar: Lion of the Desert” - a great film about the Libyan resistance against Italian occupation led by a poor school teacher named Omar Mukhtar. The lead role was played by Anthony Quinn.

what's sad is everytime he's fighting, you see the crowd cheering. they have no idea what this guy's gone through, the pain, suffering, and tragedy. they just want the entertainment. he literally became just a pawn for entertainment after losing everything. and the fact that he had such restraint despite all that shows his character. truly a modern tragedy.

You guys need to know the Romans we're very civilised , but 2000 yrs ago this was what true life was like, life was cheap, and the romans had conquered 1/3 of the world including Britain where I come from, we have the great roman Wall just up the road from where I live plus roman forts and roads still exist in Britain today. Your reaction was great to see , hopefully gladiator 2 will be even better!

Gladiator is based on Roman History. Much of the plot is taken from the 1964 Epic film "The Fall Of the Roman Empire". Alec Guinness plays Marcus Aurelius, Sophia Loren plays Drusilla, Christopher Plummer plays Commodus and Stephen Boyd plays Livius ( the Maximus Character ). It has a cast of Thousands and Thousands of real Extras and massive constructed sets. It runs 3 Hrs. and 8 Minutes.Other stars include Omar Shariff, James Mason, Mel Ferrer and Anthony Quayle.

You guys must be the most underrated couple reactors on yt and that needs to change. I've seen Gladiator in theatre, seen it on TV, pc, DVD, blue-ray numerous times over the years and I never thought it would have the same emotional impact again. One of the greatest movies ever made, period! Entire cast was phenomenal imho. I wept throughout the first time I watched it too....its a bittersweet story. Sometimes, yes, a kiss back then signaled loyalty or betrayal (think Judas). And yes, I believe everyone CAN hear what's being said in the Coliseum - even whispers - due to it's acoustically perfect construction. I think it was used for plays as well. (Someone in the comment section please correct me if I'm wrong on this).
The expressions "bread and circus ", and "feed you to the lions" came from Roman times times (Coliseum).

There's a very high chance that everyone could hear their conversation. Roman Amphitheatres were designed with crazy acoustics for the sound to carry. We have a few Roman amphitheatre remains in the UK and speaking-level volume carries right to the top of the building.

I know it’s difficult to believe, but Commodus was’t the bad guy people think. He was designed as emperor by Marco Aurelio himself and it was the first time in Rome history that an emperor gave the power directly to his natural son. Under Commodus the Roman Empire lived the longer period of peace of its history, but Commodus didn’t love to have so many responsibilities so he gave some powers to the wrong persons who created a lot of problems to the people of Rome. So, at the end, someone decided to kill him. One time they tried to poison him, but he was a strong man and didn't even feel the effects of the poison. At the end he was assassinated by his coach while he was sleeping.

The giant undefeated gladiator is Sven Ol Thorsen. An old school swedish strongman. He's been acting in Hollywood forever! The first movie I remember seeing him in was Conan, with Arnold! And to this day, I don't think he has ever learned English!😮😮😮

The sister-lust wasn’t that unusual at the time. One Emperor’s wife convinced the son to kill the father and become ruler - and then she started sleeping with him. It really happened. The need to keep the family name in royalty was severe enough. One family even invented christianity to convince people to keep them in power.

The colosseum was engineered in such a way as to amplify all sounds so that anyone sitting way up in the seats could also hear what they were saying at the bottom. People were not dumb primitives back then! The colosseum is a true work of art precisely because of this!

With all of the good performances in this, it seems like Connie Nielsen is overlooked. I thought she was also stupendous in this. A great movie she is in that doesn't get much love is "Soldier" (1998) with Kurt Russell.

Juaquin Phoenix is such a great, well rounded actor. He can do it all! an amazing villain, voice actor with Brother Bear, sympathetic in Ladder 49 (let's not forget Joker), and comedic with Signs.
And he's playing as Napolean Bonaparte in his up-coming film!
Unfortunately that role was his waterloo.
The first army fought was old school Germans, called the hun, or Gaults or Goths or Visigoths.

Another good movie dealing with a historical epoch is Kingdom of Heaven. It didn't do well at the box office because the studio butchered the editing to get the length down, but the Director's Cut is great, it stars Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Marton Csokas Liam Neeson and Brendan Gleeson. The film takes place during the Crusades and the fighting to control Jerusalem.

Going back hitting the backlog of your "old" reactions and I say: you are quickly becoming one of my favorite reaction channels i love your chemistry and the nice vibes you guys send through the internet. What's even more fascinating is that this movie was filmed with only 21 pages of script when it needed about 120 pages to be considered a full script yet Russell Crowe and the director literally came up with the rest of the story and dialogue on the spot with no help at all

11:51 a clean death here means a straight downward thrust through the neck, severing the spinal cord and penetrating the heart, quick and relatively painless. This is as opposed to the beheading they were originally going with, because despite what movies tell you it is extremely difficult to behead someone with one sword swing, usually taking at least three swings, especially with a battle-worn blade that isn't razor sharp. Not a pleasant way to go.

You guys do a great job. Many reactors talk over much of the diologue in a film, as if THEY are the star. They miss many lines that are crucial to understanding the story and the characters, and how they relate to each other.

45:33 I do think it's easier for somebody who is used to watching a harsh movie like "Gladiator" and can appreciate the beautiful emotional moments in it to watch and appreciate the beauty in a softer movie like a Hallmark film than it is for someone who is used to watching a softer movie to watch and appreciate the beauty in a harsh movie.
I agree. I think Gladiator was definitely harder for Toni to watch than any of the Hallmark movies have been for me. I was kind of worried that she wasn’t going to like Gladiator. I was genuinely surprised at just how much she liked it! 😀

I saw this film was next and I thought "Oh boy there are going to be tears with this one!". It should be some consolation that the actress who portrayed Maximus' ill-fated wife fared much better in real life. The Costa-Rican actress married director Ridley Scott in 2015.

Yeah the "good" guys are the "conquerors"? those who submitted half of Europe and enslaved foreign nations? Yep, the romanticised Romans are the good ones. 😂 Now go out and throw down the statues of Junipero Serra and Cristopher Columbus. Those were "bad" conquerors. (Until Hollywood decides to make a cool movie about them and romantically showcase their achievements)

so a Roman legion is about 5,000 strong with attached Calvary & Auxiliary troops, the 1 thing they got wrong is on the catapults with the cross bar that stopped the throwing arm thats not correct and would cause damage or snap the arm and several reduce the range it could throw. they would let it go all the way forward and either have a pile of dirt or a large leather pad it would hit

Clean death, near the beginning. That means quick and painless. It's considered respectful among soldiers. One form is shown in the movie The Last Samurai. Modern times it would mean being shot in the head. War criminals after the Nuremberg trials were hung, but in a quick way so they didn't suffer. Bullets are reserved for honorable soldiers who somehow are condemned. Clean death for the honorable. No suffering. So I think he wasn't really asking for a soldier's death, because he was. He was really asking if they were really going to go through with this dirty execution. The other way of having a clean death is to die with honor intact. His concern wasn't suffering. He was talking about the stain on their souls for what they were doing. Even a quick beheading would be dirty work. They did not take the hint.

@@popculturallychallenged I'm speaking as a modern combat vet. So totally different culture, but they probably did their homework. If you're told to kill a comrade, and he asks for a clean death, you stop the execution on the spot. Cut him free, toss him some water, and tell him if he wants a clean one he'll have to find it somewhere else.
He overpowered me and escaped. Any one of those guys could have vetoed the order. I do not weep for their characters.
The actor who played the boss of the gladiators, Oliver... something...died before filming finished. So of his scenes and voice was CGI. He's old school Hollywood.
