  • Add some new flair to your bedroom with this practical home sewing project - the basic pillowcase with French seams. You can easily customize measurements to sew up pillowcases for any size pillow. One yard of fabric is enough to make one pillowcase for a standard size of 20 x 26 inches. Mine was larger, so I needed just over one yard per pillowcase.
If you are using solids or non-direction prints, cut the fabric on the fold. For directional prints, cut two separate pieces, which will add one more line to stitch.
Make sure to pre-wash your fabric! Fabric recommendation: cotton woven

Even though I am an experienced sewist I am enjoying your "Learn to sew" series. You are a very good instructor.

Yes! Put a plastic bag on your pillow to slide it in then pull the plastic bag back out. Super slick! ♥️♥️♥️

Love it. Pillows or even duvets... I flip the case inside out. Then stick your both hands into the case. Then with your hands grab your pillow at each corner while you recover the pillow case back over onto it’s right side. .... The instructions sounds good in my head. I hope I typed out well enough to understand.

Love this. Thanks Jen. I was just looking for a video to make pillow cases to go with my new duvet and boom there you are with it!!! Especially thank you for the detail to measure and cut the fabric. Am I the only one who struggles with that???

I saw a tip on another video about getting a pillow in a pillow case. The person folded the pillow in half with the sides facing up from the middle, put the pillow in the case, and then spread out the pillow inside the pillow case. I also struggled with getting pillows in cases, and this helped me.

Tip for putting your pillow in your case easier.... learned this in nursing school.... turn your case inside out, put your hands inside the pillow case up to the corners. Then line up with your pillow corners. Then pull your pillow through while you’re reversing your pillow case.... sorry, I just realized it’s easier to show than write it up. I hope you get what I mean though. If not, message me and I’ll try to send a video....

This is great! I love the fabric you used!! I am going to make matching pillow cases for my daughters for Christmas! Oh- and I tuck the top of the pillow under my chin while I pull the case up it! It makes the job that much easier!

When I was training as a CNA my Teacher told us to turn our pillowcases inside out, line up to the corners of the pillowcase and pillow, then start pulling it down and voila!

I have a tip for getting your pillows in their cases quickly and also straight. First lay your pillow case out on a flat surface. Fold your pillow like a long narrow taco. Grab the top of the taco with one hand, kind of close to the end that will be going in first. Use the other hand to slide the pillow case on. Let go of the taco/pillow and straighten it up, if needed, with the hand that is inside the pillow case. It should be most of the way in at this point. Pick up the pillow case and shake the pillow down further as needed. I saw a hotel housekeeper do this years ago. She was super fast, and now so am I.

Another way is to hold the pillow under your chin then pull the pillowcase from the bottom of the pillow up to your chin.

Hold the pillow with your chin. That is what chins are for.
