Maybe check the starter motor is not pulling too much power or shorting out the battery. I've had that happen on two BMs I've owned

IMO, replacing a battery an average of once a year isn't normal. I use a battery tender and have only replaced my battery once and that's on a 2014 R1200RT and even then did it because the original battery aged out. It was still working. I live in Scottsdale where temps are in the 110's.

Yeah, I live in Gilbert and of course our summers are brutal on batteries among other things. Even in our conditions, batteries last 3 to 4 years before needing replacement. But clearly there is something going on here; perhaps excessive parasitic drain, or letting battery voltage get too low by not maintaining a proper charge (riding regularly), or not following an appropriate charging regimen. Other possibilities might include a faulty alternator, or voltage regulator.

Does the service light stay on after the battery has been disconnected?

No it goes off after a couple of starts.
