Mr. Robot As Therapy: Disconnection, Integration, and the Multiplicity of Self

  • A deep dive into the psychology and profound therapeutic concepts found within Mr. Robot; a meticulously crafted love-letter to my all-time favorite TV series; a look at the Self through the lens of Buddhism, Family Systems theory, and (ab)normal psych.
(as therapy) is my attempt to bring complex topics surrounding psychology and therapy to people that they could most benefit. Since I believe that anchoring new ideas in the familiar is the best way to learn, most videos will likely be centered on explaining and elucidating on these subjects as they're portrayed in popular media.

I rarely comment anywhere but I found this to be extremely powerful and deeply profound. Thank you for putting into words why maybe Mr. Robot has affected me so deeply. That I watch over and over again because I find some sort of unexplainable comfort in this story. Maybe there's some healing going on inside myself that I haven't been fully able to grasp as well. Forever grateful to Sam Esmail for telling Elliot's story and for bringing us along. And to you for creating such a beautiful explanation to what so many of us are feeling.

100% agree to all of this. I feel like I was drawn to the show much more than family and peers because deep down I identified heavily with Elliot and the disharmony between his multiple parts. Therapy brought a lot of this to light but I had to discontinue for financial reasons. This video provided me a lot of wisdom and will positively impact the rest of my life. Thank you for making a fantastic video.

Omg I'm so blessed to have seen this vid. I'm the original or whatever. I gave my own Mastermind main/front. Hesitantly aging up, getting exposed to what the rest of them kept from me to protect me not realising they were doing exactly what my mother did infantilising me even if it was not to control me intentionally, consciously unlike my mother tho it's unclear how aware she was of what she was doing to me/us. Mr Robot instantly spoke to our Mastermind. She got obsessed with it as tho it would give us all the answers. Read the ending. Afraid to watch it cuz then it would be over and I don't want Elliot's world to end. I feel lost without him. Fuck wait did I split him in? I might have. Hello friend. Seconding Zoe. I'll give front back to her. What I don't think I have, so far, hopefully, is a Mr Robot tho I suppose my good memories of her and continued love for and longing towards her are a kind of Mr Robot, just I can't work with a version of my mum so Gwen the Mastermind has kinda been the better parts to Mr Robot. She's not the original Gwen, that one or possibly several of her snapped and became persecutor

I, I don't really know who I am anymore, never did gowning up, if that even was me, but what I'm trying to say is thank you, in the sense of this shows how the show can help. especially when conveying how the show helps seems weird to others. but hey, were just someone trying to heal, so again thank you, friend.

Thank you for this video. It is really well done and explains a lot of important themes that this show explores.
I like how you explained DID, and its relation to these concepts. Having DID myself, I get how powerful integration can be, and I totally get that the problem in DID doesn't reside in the multiplicity of self, but into the disconnection between the parts. I can't express how true this is.
Not enough people understand that. A lot of doctors and therapists still think DID is a delusion and that in order to heal from it we should not give any attention to our parts, shutting them down, ignoring the "delusion" of having other alters, and this only leads to more chaos and suffering.
I've personally been there, and it's horrible. Since then I got educated and changed therapists, and day by day I work on accepting that I have DID, and accepting each part, little by little. That's the main thing that helps us tremendously, allowing us to work together as a whole system.
The world need more education on the subject. Thank you for bringing it and sharing it that way.

You've put into words what Mr robot really means at its core. And it's not only the path that the show chose to go through, it is reality too. I remember feeling darkness and thinking the same things when the show started as Elliot, but it wasn't long before I knew that I needed help, therapy, that even when it was real it didn't meant that I had to be self destructive or destructive at all. The show made me realize that and it is as you've said, through hard work, acceptance and integration that I am in the best place that I've ever been. I know who I am, or better yet, I know that I am a multifaceted person and I may not like all of my faces but I love them nonetheless and they are there to protect me. I know that there are warning signs when I'm not doing well and I know what to do when that happens. I know who loves me even when I couldn't love them back. My support system is now big, and strong and I'm able to give what they provide me. And all of this I accomplished by the last season of the show, so the only thing that I wanted was the same journey of recovery that I had, but for Elliot, and he had it. So yeah... this comment is way too long but your video deserves it just as the show deserves my eternal gratitude and debt. Thank you, friend.

I remember an experience that was under an influence, it was showing me the space between frames, and the helpers inbetween the takes, the amount of work they did for one moment to flow into the next, they saw me seeing the infinite moment and for what seemed like a long time they felt appreciated by the creation they were creating, they felt full of love and did the job full of love, and i want to thank those being for bringing the experience to me. World outside is a mirror of our internal world, we see ourselves and nothing else.

Oh goodness, this touched me so, so deeply. Mr. Robot is my favourite show of all time, and I always loved the main psychological aspect of the movie, since I used to find a lot of myself in Elliot (not to the whole extent, but still). I struggle with accepting myself, had social anxiety, I have no memories of my childhood and used to dissociate a lot. This show made me feel seen. This December I was able to afford going to therapy, I attend it every week and I do a lot of work on accepting my Self and developing awareness of what is going on with my Self in different situations. My therapist also told me about one of the versions of the family system. This video is really, really relatable to me in all of the aspects.. I did shed a tear in the end, feeling so happy for Elliot making it through and full of hope for my own situation. Thank you

Well, this explanation made me even more emotional than (re)watching the show itself! Thank you, Sir! Thank you so much for this tv show break down. I always felt Mr. Robot is my all time favorite TV shows out there. Primarily because enjoying it’s cast in such a high quality production. Framing, sound, lighting... just unbelievable (photography nerd talking here... hehe).
But breaking down these psychology aspects finally brought sense to me, why I felt such a connection to the writing of the show. Sure, nobody of us will eventually be in situations like the show. But I guess everybody has got it’s individual everyday episode at work, with friends or other situations. Understanding how to deal with our selfs and our feelings is perhaps a riddle everybody should give a shot.
With providing this magnificent video you gave a wonderful advice how I can specifically start this self reflexion.

    • @considerthis8769
      @considerthis8769  Před 3 lety +11

On what level? I think there was a lot of meaning to it, in terms of plot, Elliot's character, and Whiterose's character developments.
All scenes have layers of meaning :)
From the lens I offer here (psychological integration), the call to "stay" may be a beckoning for Elliot to stop running away from the hurt parts of himself. To embrace ego-death of his "false self", which that situation gave rise to. That was the final step in his journey.
Why Whiterose did it and what her whole deal was is a bit beyond me though haha

Hey man, all I wanna say is thank you so much for making this video. Mr. Robot will always have a special place in my heart. I never managed to tell my shrink why and how much this TV show means to me. I watched this during the darkest time of my life last year in January. Had been diagnosed with MDD so I suppose it makes sense why Mr. Robot hit me so hard. I will forever be indebted to Elliott (and of course, the creator of the show, Sam Esmail) for keeping me alive, you know. Even though he is a fictional character he understood me for than anyone. The whole show somehow did in fact. I resonated with so many characters. Also, it was practically my first ever form of catharsis. You managed to articulate what I had in mind for a looong time. It sure was getting tough to hold back those tears specially when I saw that ending scene again where Elliott finally finds himself. That scene.....man it's "powerful" to say the least. I still suffer from depression albeit it is more mild now. I hope one day I'll find myself like Elliott did. Thank you once again for making this video. You deserve wayyy more views. And yes, you earned yourself a subscriber.
PS. Okay I love how this video is 28 mins 28 seconds because if I'm not wrong, Elliott's age was 28 in the show. Not sure if it was intentional but that's very clever. I'm stunned tbh.

Incredible breakdown of this equally incredible show. Many other commenters have put it into much better words than I could, but your ability to deconstruct the psychological tropes and concepts that plague so many of us in our daily lives and analyze their portrayal in this show just makes it so much more cathartic to appreciate the show for what it is: a modern masterpiece. Well done.

Thank you for making this video.
When I finished watching this show I found myself overwhelmed with emotions, ideas, information, and questions.
You've helped put order to my thoughts, and brought a beautiful insight into the psychology and genius behind this show.
I hope you have a wonderful day.

I totally understand what your saying, and exactly the part where you said "this can work for all of us". I had shallow knowledge about the psychological topics you mentions and that's exactly how I helped myself to make amends and not totally go insane.
And that's why this show will always be my favorite, because I see myself at least on some fractional level. As a personal struggle, understanding and eventually healing.
I can't thank you enough for making this video.

I would love more videos like this. The edit is absolutely fantastic and the content is on point. I started parts work about a year ago but lost track when I went into a new season of trauma. While watching this show, I kept feeling like this show was parallel to parts work. It’s eerily and accurately portrayed. This video breaks down that work in such an articulate way.

I have just recently finished watching the show for the first time and coming off of it I did feel like it had a therapeutic effect on me to some degree, but couldn't entirely explain as to why. I think you answered that pretty well, thank you.
Also, how does this video have only 32k views is incomprehensible to me, it honestly is a perfect addendum to the story of Mr Robot and should be more popular. Fantastic writing and editing!

This video is extremely well done . You explored so much of what I had been dying to talk about with other people after watching the finale of Mr. Robot. I think this portrayal of DID works as well as it does because while it is important to show how the disorder affects those around you, it mainly focuses on how it affects the person. Having Elliot as the POV character gives the audience more understanding for how difficult it can be to cope with. But, as you said, the key is acceptance, and the strongest points emphasized in the show are that of acceptance and relationships. I think the way it shows that Elliot is worthy of love and capable of listening to and understanding himself through the means of acceptance and love from others is one of the most inspiring and hopeful messages. This show means so much to me, and it makes me really happy to know other people love it for the same reasons, because that message resonated with them, too.

I came to yt after finishing the show wanting to learn more about DID. Little did I know I was going to find myself here, taking this experience in and completely changing my mind that DID is a condition. I mean, medically it is, but just as you beautifully pointed out, even though we all navigate differently in life and unfortunately some of us experience deep trauma, we are all in a healing journey and acceptance of all parts of us that are there to get us trough and set us free. I agree that Mr. Robot is a masterpiece made to mean many different things, however it’s a story about love on it’s deepest and darkest level. Congratulations, this is another masterpiece :)
