Is 100 Mbps Fast Enough for Modern Streaming?

- 100 megabits per second. Yes. It’s fast. But is it fast enough? Modern modems are capable of handling speeds of several gigabits per second, and many of our connections are going up to and even beyond a gigabit per second. So does a hundred megabits cut it anymore? We’re digging into the world of ISPs (Internet Service Providers) starting with the basics of internet speed.

It's 100mbps not 100MBps
Jesus having low internet speeds really highlights first world problems when people complain about 100 mbps lmao like what the fuck. They must have a poor setup or poor isp for that to complaint worthy.
40 mbps is sufficient for that
@@neonphoenix5159 100MBps =1gbps

One big point to notice here is the equipment. If you have one single device between the link with an interface of 10/100 mbps then your connection speed would be capped at 100mbps. So if you want to get higher speed rates, it is a good call to check your equip first! 🙂️
100Mbps is all "most" homes need. When you get to the point when you need more, you'll know it. Also, make sure you're REALLY getting 100Mbps. Many get 100Mbps at their basement's modem/router, only to get a fraction of that at their actual device. Before complaining, "100Mbps is not enough." Optimize/fix your home network first...
mboiko lol I’m out here with 0.4 mbps
Just upgraded today from 4 megs to 100 feels good
And that’s residential internet.....I have business at 80mbs and I’m good....
Just upgraded from 6 Mbps to 200 Mbps.
100mbps is only 12.5MBps down if your lucky to get that consitistly which is not very fast. You figure most people today are gaming, streaming and have smart devices. Gone are the days when a update was like 200MB. Just today I had a 30Gb update for one game.
Sure you can get by with 100mb but I think the bar has been set pretty low and that the majority of people will absolutely be able to notice the difference if they get a faster speed. Depending on use case of course
Came by this video and I just have to appriciate the knowledge you have supplied on me. I myself have had 10mbps my whole life and next week im getting an upgrade to 500 and lets just say im excited because gaming wont cause any rage no more.
I had 5-8 mbps for years. Finally switched to 900 mbps. It's miraculous, the difference is very huge and the internet is extremely fast and strong and it's perfect for gaming, streaming and downloading large files in minutes.
same cuzzzz i had 10 mbps for 3 years and now i got 1gbps
That’s crazy
When I was a kid at home we had a dedicated fiber line installed into our home, back in the early 2000’s.. we had internet faster than my school did, faster than most smaller businesses at the time. I think via cat5 we were up to 1gig in 2005 and I was blown away at the speed of torrent downloads (during the time of mass downloading and very little isp monitoring). My parents later switched back to Comcast/xfinity, due to the local tv/isp not having the desired tv channels.(specifically the pac12 network and sporting channels). Amazing how expensive Comcast is to this day, and sad to say, the previous isp/tv folded years later. I’d be curious to know what a dedicated fiber line gets bandwidth wise.
Typically a dedicated fiber line gets you upwards of 1gbit, 10gbit is manageable by most ISPs. Anything higher requires some phone calls and a good equipped bank account.

I've only got 50 mbps. could I fully optimize by getting a better modem. I have trouble streaming while my mom is on her internet tv.
I have 50mbps and since I alone is connected to that network I have no issues with streaming 4K shows and most importantly no lag while playing games
Have u tried streaming for long with high quality?

Hi I just downgraded from 1 GB to 600 MB data plan as I had to get unlimited monthly data plan (been reaching almost 1.2TB data usage a month) We have 4 users that typically streams youtube/netflix on ipads at the same time, 2 wfh and elearning and some online pc and ps4 gaming. We also like to video call for hours. Is this data speeds enough or should I go back to 1gb speeds? Thanks
Omg!!!! The AOL sign on screen!!! Haha the memories!!!
The issue with ISPs is not speed, which is readily available. The big problem is DATA CAPS. In our area, Comcast's cap is at 1.2 TB. That may sound like a lot, but like you pointed out in the video, several people and data-centric devices in one home can chew through that cap fairly quickly. Comcast will sell you unlimited data for $30 per month. Of course they do.
I have 100 fiber, i do have a lot stuff going, my question is this, my google wifi, i have five points, when i check the usage, it always says 100 both upload and download, does this mean, i am running at max and should upgrade?
is 10 mbps ETHERNET good or 40 mbps WIFI good for gaming and Netflix? (my PC won't show 100 mbps on control panel adapter options even after selection 100 mbps half-full duplex so I've to choose from wither ethernet 10 mbps or WIFI 40 mbps) My ISP gives 40 mbps. Please suggest me.
Best format. U got right into this
Great video. Helpful Information. What about now though with Streaming, Distance learning, Students at home learning through Zoom or Google Hangouts?
Loved this video you explained everything very well, thank you
Thanks for providing such an easy to understand video. I was browsing isp’s for future use and am admittedly not the most tech savvy millennial.

When the AOL dialup section came up, my 6 yo son seemed confused and asked me what that was :)
What if i have 100mb ps but still freamin lag? Wheres that come from? Is my whatever card from my pc not strong enough?
I have 15 mbs currently my router is capable of 100 but the provider is only giving us 15 but we are getting upgraded to 80 is it any good and would anyone recommend it
I telework two days a weeks plus I stream all of my TV along with having several smart home devices. Also, the TV that I stream is roughly 50 -60% sports so yes I need 100 down. Years ago I had a cheaper 50 down plan but I was having to many buffering issues when I worked from home.
Lastly, listening to that AOL connection gave me flashbacks to college. I was in undergrad in the 90’s and when registering for classes we had to do it online and you would first pray you could get connected in time to get the professor you wanted then you would pray you wouldn’t get kicked off before you finished registering. 😂😂😂
Gotta tell you, bud: Even today nothing has changed. You gotta register yourself, chose your course and pray, that the servers do not collaps… xDDD
Greetings from Germany :D
I remember complaining about having 2mbps internet for years in house of 10 people (family members) but after a while upgrade to 8mbps and I was so grateful. Now I have 100mbps but I only use to stream videos and download small sized stuff and not using it to its fullest.
Damn u r me, i had a 2mbps and then upgraded to 8 and now using 20mbps raw and 500mbps for youtube and other google service apps and movie server
@@carmell17X bruh I had 1 Mbps at start 😂 , then upgraded to 30 and then 50 and then 75 and now it's 100 but when I increased from 1-50 my router didn't support that speed so we had to simply buy the new modem router and it supports 1gb/sec so yea now it supports 100mb/sec now I am grateful , everyone at my home uses soo much internet.

I’m moving into a new apartment and my options are spectrum or frontier and I’m leaning toward spectrum. I just got a 4K tv and plan on streaming with it to its full potential. It’s just myself and one other person, with the occasional guests. There’s phones, iPads, laptops, game consoles, the usual. What would be recommended as far as speed goes so the connection doesn’t get bogged down?
A 4K stream requires a consistent 25 Mbps all on its own. So if you have another person in the home with all those other devices, you'll need a minimum of 50 Mbps, but I'd look for a 100 Mbps if you can afford it and it's available.
I've found that laptops and smaller devices generally have smaller speeds due to the size if cards being used. 40 to 70mbps for laptops. My desktop upstairs away from my wireless modem using a ZTC AC1900 card Dual band card gets 130 to 170mbps at best.
I'm pretty satisfied.
So... is 100mps, or 200mps good for ps4 online gaming and streaming while watching youtube per say? Anyone help, trying to get wifi by today!
Your Website said that Spectrum was available in my area and when I tried to check them out they weren't available.
For years ive lived with 300kbps-1mbps, this week I finally got a huge upgrade of 150MBPS and it feels heavenly

This is 2021 now so I'm wondering if 100mbps is still decent?
My family wants to get WiFi but we don’t know if we should get 75 mbps or 175 mbps for $15 dollars more at $45...were a family of 3 we only have 1 phone each and I have a laptop for school and a Xbox which one should we get?
I guess 75 would be good for you.
Done 2 years gaming online in the outback. 5mbps -15mbps was the average. I still think it fast, but I grew up downloading off limewire waiting 2-4 days for an album and 30 minutes wait for 1 song on CZcams. Getting full 4G phone service is god mode for me. 100mbps is FAST!
You said a mouthful, my friend. A lot of people think 100mbps is slow, however, it isn't.
It all depends on the WiFi router you choose to use. If you use the standard WiFi router most ISPs supply, you’re going to receive “standard” service. Most “standard” WiFi routers only can handle maybe 2-3 simultaneous devices/streams at a time. Also, devices in your home just get what the WiFi router throws out. If you purchase a smart/mesh Wifi router system, you’ll most likely receive better service. Smart WiFi routers can intelligently look in your network at what devices need at any given time. I install cable internet and the ISP I work for offers “up to” 1gbps speeds. Is it necessary? Absolutely not! Why pay for speeds you’ll never receive only on a wired connection? Most folks are all about saving money on their utility bill. Why not save on your internet bill, too?
We currently have 1gb fiber wifi .. for my gamer son, & 2 streaming tvs. My son moved out & I'm looking at downgrading service just to stream on the 2 tvs .. iyo would 100mb be sufficient? Guy @ Bestbuy sold me on purchasing a Linksys home mesh system that we aren't even using 🤦♀️
Thanks for above info. Really helps when considering ISP, what router you might be getting.
@Calactic roughly around how much are you paying for the 500mbps package? Trying to see how much I need to game, stream Netflix, laptop, and phone. For fiber that is. And it'll be. just for myself.
I’ve upgraded my internet plan to up to 400 mbps. Did I over do it?
thank you for the simple explanation
You're welcome!
I moved and upgraded to Spectrum, I use to get 25 Mbps for 50 dollars with AT&T now I get 235 with Mbps with Spectrum for the same price.
AT&T is offering 500Mbps for $55 right now no contracts.
Even if you have 100mbps doesn’t it depend on what the other end your connected to has? So say if your connected at 100mbps and your connected to a website that only has 25mbps, so would your connection to this website be limited to 25mbps? Anyone can correct me if im wrong
I live near downtown Portland so I get around 1000 but it always drops way down
Yes it is fast enough. I have a 100 Mbps fiber connection (up & down) and we stream everything with zero issues (4 TV’s, with at least two live TV streams going, Netflix, PS4, phones, tablets, laptops, plus a VPN connection here and there for work). Never once had a slowness issue at all, so yes 100 Mbps is plenty.
Who do u have for internet?
Beth Ann Simmons a local internet provider in my area. They provide fiber and cost about $12 more than AT&T and around the same for Comcast’s basic service in this area.
Fiber is whole a lot better than Comcast Coaxial

About streaming, It's enough for most people who just stream HD or even 4k on Prime or Netflix, it seldom exceeded 20-30mbps in our tests. But for high bitrate 4k with HDR, Dolby Vision, which can easily reach 60-100mbps it may be difficult to smoothly play 2 streams simultaneously. For 8k high bitrate streams it wouldn't be enough, since it will easily reach 300mbps and more.
