    "Integrity" means not trying to pass yourself off as something that doesn't even exist. I'm talking to you "communication professor". Integrity means not running a conservative blog that you try to pass off as professional advise.

      I don't hide the fact that I'm a Christian on my channel or in my professional life. Everybody knows that about me. I talk about it openly all of the time. If anybody is bothered by it, that's not my problem.

    Integrity: Doing the right thing when no one is looking and no one will ever know. I taught my kids integrity is not "not stealing a cookie from the cookie jar because you might get caught", instead..it's "not stealing a cookie from the cookie jar because you know it's the wrong thing to do".

      Great explanation. It's hard doing the right thing, due to being imperfect, that and living in a world that tries to paint the picture: "What's bad is good, and what's good is lame."
      All too often it tries to push the idea that doing the wrong thing will be to your benefit, the same lie that Satan told Eve, in Genesis chapter 3.

    Integrity stems from the Latin word 'integer' which means whole and complete. So integrity requires an inner sense of 'wholeness' and consistency of character. When you are in integrity, people should be able to visibly see it through your actions, words, decisions, methods, and outcomes. When you are 'whole' and consistent, there is only one you. You bring that same you wherever you are, regardless of the circumstance. You don't leave parts of yourself behind. You don't have a 'work you,' a 'family you,' and a 'social you.' You are YOU all the time.

    Integrity is nothing more than an internal effort to be part of a whole, often visible by others... An honest effort to play an integral role in some aspect of your life. Integrity at home is different than integrity at work.
    People really seem to prop this definition up and make integrity seem like someone who is morally perfect. I find it to often be the opposite. Often the person with integrity ends up getting stepped on.

    • @DavGre
      @DavGre Před 7 měsíci +1

      Sure, you’ve got some good points, and if you think of integrity as a personal moral boundary rather than an absolute moral position in all circumstances, it might align closer to your perception of that definition.
      I think being consistent with one’s moral values gives them integrity, as long as they broadcast their values. I’ve known good criminals and bad cops, bad priests and honorable thieves, the integrity doesn’t come from always doing good or bad, it’s from being consistent with yourself and sticking to your word.

    Many years ago I was driving in my truck and I saw a purse in the middle of the road. For some reason I had a strong sense that the purse must have fallen off the back of some woman's car.
    The Curiosity to see what was inside was very strong but, my next thought overcame my curiosity and I began to think of how much time it would take to return the purse to its rightful owner.
    As a business owner, I've always worked harder than most and struggled to find enough time in a day to complete all of my desired goals, so maybe that could also have contributed to my thought process.
    ? Would I still react the same today as I did 20 years ago.
    Unfortunately, this world has changed for the worse and because of this, I think if I found a large sum of money, I just might do a little research on the person in order to find out about their character, just in case they use their money for evil purposes and if so, you can figure the rest out for yourself.

    You put forth some convincing arguments, I especially enjoyed the story about the lawyer.
    I personally find it very difficult to stick to any particular set of moral values in the long run, though, since there will always be times when those values are tested. Lying isn't always wrong. Helping a stranger in need isn't always wise. Never indulging in sweets has it's downsides. And so on, and so on. There's also the risk of mistakingly following a set of harmful principles, and refusing to reflect on these in the moment because you've chosen to stand by your integrity, thus not growing as a person.
    While there's no denying some of the pros of having integrity, I also fear it turns you into a very square and inflexible person, which can damage both your professional life and personal life in the long run. I can't help but wonder if the pros really outweigh the cons. Any thoughts on this?

    Jon Snow: I am not going to swear an oath I can not uphold, Tall about my father if you want, Tell me that’s the attitude that got him killed. When enough people make false promises, word stop meaning anything, then there are no more answers, only better and better lies, and lies won’t help us in this fight.

    Instead stealing defined by knowing the owner and intending on taking from them but if they make their own mistake for possibly lack of care or focus on themselves that their punishment is finders keepers, if you don't know the owner and you find it in the sand and don't pick it up it could be lost forever but God gifted it your way, if you find the owner then yes you can give it to them but sometimes you never find the owner and also sometimes another man's trash is another man's treasure. I think you used a bad example to discuss the meaning of integrity

    Integrity really depends on where you live. Imagine you are a Jew living back in Nazi Germany. How long are you going to make it telling the truth?
    And this isn't a rhetorical question to me because I am living in Ukraine right now where neo-Nazi organisations are reigning. You are literally taking your life in your hands here if you are speaking your mind.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  Před 3 lety

      Hi, Zen. You raise important and interesting points. I have a few thoughts. But, I won't pretend I really understand the context in Nazi Germany or in Ukraine right now. I'm only speaking from my own experience. First, integrity does not necessarily mean always *_speaking out_* . In fact, it very often means doing the right thing even when (or especially when) nobody is looking. Sometimes it is a better path to take proper action but out of sight. There were many people who stood up to and subverted the Nazis behind the scenes. Second, yes, integrity may sometimes mean speaking out or taking action knowing it comes with great potential personal consequences. There is frequently a price for doing the right thing. It still may be with it, however. History has shown us that if we surrender the ability/right to speak out as a society, then we will very quickly lose all other rights that follow it. To paraphrase Martin Luther King Jr., "Life isn't worth living until you have found something worth dying for." So, yes, there have been many times in history--like Dr. King, the people who openly stood up to Hitler, and many others--where people have taken their lives into their own hands by living a life of integrity. Third, from a bigger picture, there may be ways to speak up that get a message out there in society that does not have the same immediate risks. For instance, communicating online does not carry the same real-time risks as showing up at a public protest. Forth, I believe that the key for 90% of the people I know is to work first on clarifying who they really are, what they stand for, and their inner world. I think it is important to first settle whatever inner conflicts we might have about our priorities. Perhaps the worst fate I could imagine is getting swept up in a cultural wave mostly because I didn't know who I was or I was afraid to speak up for what I knew was right. It is easy for me to talk tough because my life is not being threatened. But, I'd like to think I would stick by my core beliefs whatever the cost. The individuals who settle those questions for themselves do not seem to fear even death the way many people do. I don't know if I could actually do that but I hope I could be like that if tested. Either way, these are important issues, though, Zen, and I'm glad you're bringing them up. There are no easy answers but the questions themselves are worth wrestling with.

    I disagree with this. It's confusing morality with integrity. It should be possible to be bad and yet hold integrity. The lady can decide to pocket the money and keep her integrity as long she didn't lie about it. Handing back the money was a moral decision.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  Před 2 lety

      Moral uprightness is an inseparable part of the dictionary definition I shared @:19. I didn't make that definition up. You'll see that morality is included in most dictionaries as part and parcel of integrity. You can look up the word yourself. But, more than that, the example demonstrates that she is not divided between her inner convictions and her outward behavior. Integrity, thus, is also about being whole and internally undivided. She made the decision without hesitating. That indicates integrity.

    • @RalphRomero
      @RalphRomero Před 2 lety

      @@alexanderlyon Not most, but some dictionaries. Example from Cambridge 'the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles that you refuse to change'. It only mentions strong moral principles and not any quality of soundness, uprightness, good or bad. All the definitions I've seen mention having moral principles, adherence to those principles and honesty. But since moral polarity is only in some of them, that makes me question whether it should be included.

      I think you're right. one can have integrity based on love for the human race or based on hating your fellow human being. when you think of Jimmy Bulger for instance, described as strictly criminal, or the movie American Gangster or the theatrical role of the Joker - they're too men of their words. just contrary to the rules publicly preached by their culture. which happens to be dominated by the ideology of patronizing the public, the people. universally and systematically. at the core, at the highest levels of power clearly satanic. and that with godly integrity.

    I think that these examples are kind of black-and-white.Having integrity doesn't mean things stupidly honest. And you can have integrity that is different for different people. Principles do not have to be applied so widely to call it integrity. Different principles of integrity apply to different people.I think what you left out of your example is incorruptibility.

    I love 95% of your talk. But your first story is questionable. If I were walking down the beach and saw a beautiful shell, a message in a bottle, and a Rolex watch, none of those things are mine until I pick them up. Even the watch is mine unless the owner is still alive and wants it back. The likelihood that someone is looking for the watch is pretty high, so I do my due diligence to try to find the owner or have a logical place to turn in the watch like a Beach Patrol office. If the person is found then I have done the owner a great service. So as the statement goes in your story, "I would not pick it up" does not sound like integrity to me, sounds like highly disciplined individual that does not want to be of service. Maybe they want to be a hermit without guilt, then they would not even pick up the beautiful shell and miss out on the up close investigation. Everyone lies about what we are the most immature, insecure, or attached to an appearance that is other than what the truth is. If the character in your story is a real person I feel that they need could use someone to help them get a little more real.
