  • IT WAS ALMOST PERFECT... living in a van in the Swedish wilderness. (female van life Sweden)
    This week, after a hectic van life trip around Norway, we cross the border into Sweden. We were looking for some peace and tranquility so we head as far into the Swedish wilderness as we could get in our self built campervan.
    The park up that we found was as close to VANLIFE perfection as you can really get, in the forest, on a lake and with it's own fire pit. All we had in mind (after Emilys digital nomad duties were complete) was some wild camping, wild swimming in the freezing lake, some kayaking to an isolated island and cooking dinner by the fire.
    The 24 hours we spent here (almost) was oh so close to perfect...

    I mentioned finger before on another video, for mozzy bites. I forgot to say it has to be apple cider vinegar. I use Maille vintage de cider. We live in Aude in the south of France, the mozzies made my life miserable until we found this stuff on Amazon- EARTH SENSE BIO CHASSE INSECTS cosmos organic, it actually works! You can get spray or block roll-on. We use both, the spray is easier but in my opinion not quite as affective as the block roll-on thingy. It is slightly sticky at first and horrible if you get it near your mouth or eyes. However it is 100% natural so it won’t hurt you. Once it’s on it’s not too bad and you get used to it. Very, very much worth the effort of putting it on because the natural lemony smell keeps them away from you. The vinegar will take the itch out but some bites you may need to persist keeping the cotton wool, or make-up remover pad thing, on the bite for 5/10 minutes until it feels safe to stop, you’ll work it out once you get used to it (the pads are the best way to apply the vinegar). This will stop the itch coming back, 90% of the time you get bitten, use the vinegar and then it’s totally gone! do it as soon as you can but even if some time has past it still helps. If it does start itching again just use the finger again. You’re welcome 🥰 PS try putting your suntan lotion on first, then the Earth Sense.

    A small tip for you Ladies, mosqitoes and knits.. are the worst... but, in order to get the itching down quickly- take a soap-bar (needs to be hard, not the liquid one) lather it up with a small amount of water, rub it in on the bite and let it stay on and the itchy outchy will go away :)

    Our "mygg" (mosquitos) can be a serious annoyance - they do like to be in the same places we humans like. And it sucks!
    But, if you think they are bad, look out for the tiny black kind of "dots" that can be around in the same places. First you think they are nothing, but as they bite you soon, very soon, find out they are serious. We call them "svidknott" or something that translates into a long series of four letter words. I think they're mostly called no-see-ums in English.

  • @ingvartorma9789
    @ingvartorma9789 Před 2 lety +1

    To avoid mosquitoes biting you is to eat food with a lot of garlic in it or do as I do, squeeze 6 cloves of garlic into a drinking glass and then pour in water and stir with a spoon and then sweep it all in. This should not be done on an empty stomach. In addition to the fact that mosquitoes do not bite, it prevents one from catching a cold or suffering from a stomach ailment. Then you have missed visiting the Kiruna mountains, as you drive after Norway the road from Kiruna up towards Narvik. This is a beautiful road to ride and is very popular with tourists. More and more people from the UK have discovered Kiruna and our mountain environment, here the sun never sets from mid-May to mid-July. We have something called midnight sun.

    I gotten nostalgic.. I went 5 times to sweden, for two months each time, to pick up berries) And I had slept at similar looking spots on numerous occasions, but in a smaller cars=) Yes, its all about tranquility. And mosquitoes =) Sometimes they have burning sticks laying around at such cabins to keep the mosquitoes away)
    By the way, around this time of year starts the season for "hjutron" berries, little yellow ones. If I'm not mistaken, there's ten times more vitamin C in these berries compared to oranges. You can find them on "used-to-be swamps", or dry swamps, which are relatively safe to walk on)
    And there's a blueberries season in about a week or two. And then lingon(redberries), up until the end of September. And A LOT of moose. They often cross the road while you drive, usually its the mother-moose and a calf. And there's bears, never seen one, but once it was close to our car roaring, we only heard the roar(we were later told that it might have been the lost baby-bear calling for its mother). And I've spoken to many swedes who have themselves seen bears.
    I miss Sweden.. There's smth mysterious about its wild nature. Good people too.

      @campervibe  Před 2 lety +1

      @@campervibe (advice from sweds). If you meet a bear, Always face towards him, while slowly walking backwards. Good if you have a cap on your head so you can take it off and leave it for the bear to sniff while you retreat. Also talk to a bear while walking away, and while he sniffs your cap(if you don't have a cap, - take off any other piece of your clothing). And of course - don't try to run, bears are impressively good at running. Also, bears try to keep away from the noisy places with humans, so if you are out and about with your dog - its good if you make any kind of noise like whistling, talking and so on. As I said, I spent altogether almost a year out in swedish forests and wilderness picking berries, and only once I almost came close to meeting a bear. So the chances are less than 10% of meeting one. But there's one thing. The fact that I didn't see a bear doesnt mean they don't see you. I can say, and my friend also acknowledged this once, - that sometimes you get a weird feeling- like you are being watched over(when out and about). Its very strange feeling. I experienced it couple of times.

    Nice video! Be careful with your moose hunt. They are Ill tempered. Next time you make potatoes in the fire slice them and slice a onion. Put them together and roast. The onion gives it a lovely flavor and slicing helps it cook faster.

    Have you tried citronella candles they are supposed to deter mosquitoes I have found Australianbody care Tea tree oil (shopping channel QVC) is a good natural antiseptic they do hand/body wash and small antiseptic bottle you can carry in the glove box or backpack sadly two 1ltr bottle's of body/handwash is £55 add £3.95 p&p but you don't need a lot , Lou where did you get your commando (originally designed by the military to be carried in a survival pack) saw I have been looking for a decent one for years now most fail apart first use.
    I agree with Summer not a great fan of children (that crying baby sounded as if it was in the van with you), Emily swimming was fun to watch take her too the opticians her comment I can't see the bottom was priceless the sad thing is I have found that thing's used to do when I was your age makes me nervous (not great at heights anymore).
    Does Emily share the driving on long trips or hunt for snacks and more snacks.
    With AJ and Summer how do you find a vet's when you don't know the area, the further north you go getting close to polar bear territory you are in Wolf and white tailed eagles (a lot bigger than Golden) territory already

    • @campervibe

      I don’t share the driving mainly due to I work whilst we are driving and Lou is an horrendous passenger who hates to not drive 🙈
      Oh the vets thing purely Google and if we know we are going somewhere more remote that could potentially impact us then we look at that stuff before we get there 🙂
