- POT ROAST - My loving aunt Celie Coutinho made the best Pot Roast. Although this is called Roast Beef in India, it's prepared in a pressure cooker and it cooked till tender with a lot of spices. This recipe was handwritten by my aunt and given to me only months before she passed away
suddenly.
Here are the ingredients and steps to make this recipe!
Beef Chunk 1 kg, 2.2 lbs
Juice of 1.5 limes
1 tsp each Chilli powder, Turmeric & ground Cumin powder
30 crushed black Peppercorns
½ cup Oil
1 cup sliced red Onions
6 Kashmiri Chillies
¼ cup(4 tbsps) each Ginger & Garlic paste
3- 4 tbsps Vinegar
2 inch stick Cinnamon
20 - 30 cloves
2 potatoes sliced and fried
¼ cup chopped Coriander
Cut the beef into 4 pieces and marinate with the lime juice, salt, cumin, turmeric & chilli powder and the peppercorns
Add the Ginger & Garlic paste and the Vinegar
Add the cinnamon and pierce the meat with the cloves
Marinate overnight
Heat oil and saute the onions
Break the Kashmiri chillies into smaller pieces and add to the onions
Either move the onions to one side or remove them and brown the beef chunks
Add 1 cup of water and pressure cook for 3 whistles
Remove the chunks and cool
Cook the gravy till it thickens up
Slice the beef and return it to the gravy, adding the precooked potatoes and extra pepper
Garnish with chopper coriander

This recipe looks soooo delicious! It makes me want to make it for next meal! However, what can I do if I don't have a pressure cooker? Although after watching this video you make me want to run out and buy one! How long did the three whistles take?
+David H this is best made in a pressure cooker. You should get one, you will love it!
Cooking this for home easter celebration. Happy Easter all.
Same to you! I am making it too!

I made this today to eat with pav and I’d say this recipe is a keeper. The only additional thing I did was stud the meat with garlic in addition to the cloves. Empty bowl and full bellies.
SOOOOO happy to hear this! And you can't go wrong with more garlic!
Love this recipe, reminds me of my mom's roast
Thanks so much!

Delicious! How long would this take in the Instant pot?
You're not saving time per se, but you can set the time and not have to watch it.
A recipe from 5years ago _You made my day -I only wish I saw this yesterday then it would have been my Sunday lunch -so today becomes the marination day.Im one of the lucky sods who doesn’t have to worry about the modern day ailments like sugar cholesterol -genetics-so I take full advantage! Any pertinent advice if I decided to do this with half kilo of meat Or do I just use my common sense
Hope you enjoy!
Yummy! Thankyou!
My pleasure 😊
Cool trick with the cloves!
Thank you!!! That credit goes to my Mommy!
Kravings wow it fantastic god bless you dear
Thank you so much Caroline!
Thank you Caroline!
Super excellent
Thank you so much!
Looks delish btw which part of meat to be used
You can use whatever you like, typically I use sirloin.
Hi Karen, I chanced upon your channel today. This recipe looks great and I am going to try it on the weekend. Pls tell me how long you braised the beef and was it on high or medium flame? Thnks.
Thanks Lakshmi! I usually leave it on a moderate flame so there's no chance of burning. If you have an Instant Pot, I'm planning to redo this recipe in it.
@@KravingsFoodAdventures thnk u.
Love my pressure cooker, they are great. But mine does not whistle. About how long do you cook the meat for once it comes up to pressure?
Yeah I have an older one that does not whistle anymore ... but I can tell that it's building steam.
Hiii I was just wondering the name of the soundtrack you have on in the background. I like it a lot, could you give its name?
It's a konkani song "undrea mohjea mama" mouse is my uncle u can chk on youtube
@@30ronith thanks
I made it and my family liked it! I added carrots. I doubled the spices for 2 pound pot roast. It took me 35 minutes to cook it in American stove top pressure cooker.
Great job!

Hi Karen,
This is how my mum would prepare the beef roast with cloves inserted in the meat.
I would like to add for the benefit of those who don't know ( I might have missed it though if you have already mentioned it); we preferably use coconut vinegar in the cooking as the synthetic vinegar just doesn't give the authentic taste.
Apart from that, you have shared authentic goan beef asado recipe!
Thank you!
Thank you!!!!
I always wanted to make beef roast but in Bombay we get buffalo meat will it taste good as beef
It should, a lot of people use it
Thank you, looks wonderful. Could I prepare this with pork?
For sure you could! Thanks!
Yummylicious
Thank you 😋
Made this a Second time today for my Canadian Thanksgiving lunch and had 2 guests over and we all loved it ❤ This is my goto pot roast recipe. Thank you Karen 👏🏽👌🏽👍🏽🙏🏽
That is awesome Bruce! All thanks to my aunty Celie for the inspiration!
Hello Karen, is there a recommended cut of meat that you use for this recipe.. is it the round, roast or sirloin or.. ?
Yeah I use Sirloin a lot! But I also use Eye of round - if it's on sale, I will buy it!
Karen, the roast made me nostalgic, as did the beautiful cover of Undra muhjya mama. Where can I find the same??
Thank you! That song is not publicly available. A friend just played it for me and I recorded it.
Oh no! Could u pls consider sharing the track? I love the mellow, sophisticated excitement of the guitar-violin combination
I have to find it first :) send me an email and I’ll look for it!
Kravings perfect. Could I have your email address pls?
Thanks for the recipe.
Had a question here- why do we have to cook the chunks first and then chop them into smaller pieces? Can we, instead, begin cooking with the smaller chunks?
Hi there! 🙏 Thanks! I think a few reasons. I would imagine because people didn’t have ovens, they did it this way. If you slice before, one it’s very hard to slice raw beef and two your slices would be over cooked and shredded.
Kravings , I tried it with sliced meat from the beginning (instead of chunks) it came out pretty well.
Saved some time as well.
However, thanks to your recipe, it tasted heavenly!
Bharath, so glad to hear this! Did you have trouble slicing the meat raw?
@@KravingsFoodAdventures The guy whom I buy the meat from is fantastic. He slices it for me :-)
Bharath Sequeira lucky you!!!!!
Any idea how long it would take in an instant pot?
:) I got you - czcams.com/video/SkKX93tlrFM/video.html
Woww absolutely beautiful.. your kids must be lucky to have a wonderful mom chef ..😘😘
Thank you so much
None of my pressure cookers 'whistle'. How long t=does this take? I think a teaspoon each of butter or ghee and sugar would have given a great finish to a super-duper recipe. Thanks.
mmmmm
Definitely not butter sugar ghee. Enough fat on the Beef chunks. I sometimes cook in a slow cooker or just in a big pot over slow fire with a lid on and water over the lid. Minimal water in the pot
@@colleencarvalho4970 You need to educate yourself about natural fat.Listen to Sven Ekberg, Robert Lustig and Pradeep Jamnadas.
Yummy 😋 thanks
Can share roast beef tongue receipe
Sure 😊 on my bucket list
😋😋😋
:) ty
You said black jeera. Should I roast the jeera. Pl reply.
Oh Kala or Black Jeera is a kind of Cumin. But you can use regular Cumin as well. Thanks!
Nice
Thanks so much!
Hi karen, can I use pork using the same receipe.
Yes you can! Absolutely!
Hiii I was wondering did u throw out the cloves by any chance
Nope! I love clove and keep them in!
Caroline if you're not subscribed, please do so, I'm 5 subs away from 50,000! Thank you!
I am trying this recipe today, will use mutton bcz India has banned beef...hope it turns out well
I'm sure it will!!!!!
Can we also do it with pork?
I'm sure it will work perfect!
We make our Pork roast like this.
Awesome!
Please share Pork Roast. Shall appreciate. Thx. Mam. I liked Beef preparation. 👍👍
Hey Amelia - unfortunately I don't have a Pork Roast - only beef
@@KravingsFoodAdventures Not a problem. Thx.
Is there a book?
Like a recipe book? No
Can you make this in instant pot?
You sure can ... I've done it in the IP and it turned out great.
Can you share the settings you used and if anything you did differently from above method? Thank you so much
Please share Chicken spicy curry. Tag me. Don't forget. Great job.
Hey Amelia! I don't think I can tag you on CZcams, if you search for Kravings and Curry, you will get a ton of recipes - thank you!!!
which part of the beef should we buy? can we do this in mutton? if so, which part?
You can certainly use mutton , but you need a chunk. I use sirloin or whatever is on sale!
Kravings Jazak'Allah Khair my sister.
:)
I think you mean 4 tsp each of garlic and ginger but I may be wrong?
Whoops!
So is it 4tsp or tbsp
Hi Karen
I like to watch your mouth watering vedio
I would like to know your are EAST INDIAN OR GOAN
Both! My dad is Goan and my mom is East Indian!
I'd like to know what song is being used at the intro. I've heard it multiple times in her videos and it'd make great background music.
Here it is! undir mama ailo
Why don't you just use Shazam?? Duhh
Black pepper is the soul of this dish
Tru dat! Red Chilli too!
Great recipe..... but I suggest edit out the instructions abt the pressure cooker. In India even a hovel boasts of a pressure cooker 😂
Yes, but many here in Canada have never used one ... I've now switched to the Instant Pot!
How to cook pork roast.
You can use the same process.
🐬🙂
Very nice recipe. Taste is spot on however, 3 whistles was not enough for me and the beef was still slightly chewy. I had to give it another 2-3 whistles then it was fine.
Thank you Varun ....glad you cooked it longer - it does differ - type of beef, how big your pot is and the heat source! Please also consider subscribing to my channel - cheers!
Kravings done. Looking forward to more recipes
We indians dont use vinegar as part of any if our dishes...i am from NE and we definitely dont, the rest the spices is, as per preference, though we NEasterns dont use it. Ginger, garlic and locally found herbs is what we use. Overall, good beef receipes in this video
I'm sorry who told you Indians don't use vinegar? Vinegar is a huge part of the Goan cuisine.
Vinegar is part of East Indian cooking too and Mangalorean and also French colonies in the South of India like in Pondicherry
