  • Trans cover going back on. Always needs a little persuasion going back on and a string comes in handy. No fuel tank removal!

    If you ever have to do that job again I have two good tricks that make it easier. I always drilled and tapped a hole in the cover for a 5/16" bolt in a spot that would hold the reverse detent lever over. After the cover is installed thread the bolt out the detent will snap over to the reverse shaft put a little silicone on a short bolt thread it in to seal the hole. Also put a socket or nut under the park linkage on the cover to hold the park pawl out of the way. Clean the reverse shaft with emory cloth and that cover will drop on no problem.

    Every brand of tractors has there problems, we grow to love what we grew up on. You learn to fix them and come up with home made tools along the way. Great job for trying and not giving up!

    The IH tool tool to keep the reverse shaft down in the shift fork does work good. It basically pulls the cover up by pushing down on the reverse shaft.

    Good job! That is a job I will have to do at some point on our 706. But for now with just the right amount of clutch, brake, and lever action I can still hit reverse and most of the time hit the 3-4 side of the gate lol!

    I know I’m late but I like to put a safety wire on that spring so it won’t come off in the transmission like the original ones did. Also we always make our help put our 86 series tractors in neutral and let completely out of the clutch just in case it’s still stuck in low range before you put it in park or it will cut all the teeth off the reverse gear.
    Good luck with the 1086

      I thought about doing something to ensure the springs positioning, but after the first one stayed for forty years, I hope this new one will survive that long. Then we shall see about the state of the rest of the machine.

    Good to see you keeping the old girl running with doing all that work to it you should try and get the doors on and tidying the tractor up and put some nice lights on leds would help you and at least you would have a good working tractor with working lights so you don’t need to strap your battery powered light to the front of the tractor

      @@boehmfarm4276 Now you are sounding like my dad. In our area, when we were farming, the farmers got together and built their own Canola processing plant. It is still there and about three times the original size. They sell to their own cooperative. They also did this with a natural gas processing plant. Everyone signed up for supply to house, garage and machine sheds. Sure beat propane tanks. And if course that coop now ships into the natural gas lines feeding the USA. So you may have to investigate co-op feasibility... But big money!

    Just out of curosity. I am an IH guy myself, I have been driving a 784 4-wd for nearly 4 years now. And when the time comes to change tractor i've looked on other IH tractors. But I've also looked on Zetors and Belarus/MTZ, I like the big cabs on them and the simplicity in them. Whats you're thoughts on those commies? Also, great video. Love the 1086, shame they nearly don't exists in Norway.

      We have a Zetor 120 on our farm does all tillage amd heavy work. Their is about 500-1000 hours and only problem is twitch my grandpa forgot to close the door and it got caught on a trailer or anything and shattered. But their great easy to work on cheap parts cheap to buy no computer and electronics crap so anyone can work on it. I mainly believe in that you pay more for the colour of the tractor look at a120 hp John Deere compared to a Zetor 120-140 I bet the JD I more and the Zetor may do a better Job?

    • @joewelage6776
      @joewelage6776 Před 5 lety

      preston kerr never had a Zetor but neighbors have and they seemed like a good tractor. The problem when buying a tractor is different for many ppl, where I live getting parts and resell is everything, so Yes a Jd is gonna cost more but parts are easy to get and resell is high. If you plan on keeping the tractor forever and can wait for parts in the mail then don’t buy a Big name brand.
