    Nintendo: We don't need link cables for the gameboy pocket. We should probably keep it anyway though, let's just make it cheaper.
    Game Freak: Hello there. Look at this game that makes heavy use of the link cable and will be extremely popular.
    Nintendo: Dodged a bullet on that one.

      Unfortunately that was not the case for the Super Game Boy; they had to make a "Super Game Boy 2" just to add a link cable port.

    • @JeffreyPiatt
      @JeffreyPiatt Před rokem +4

      That was likely because when they built the first one they didn't picture users wanting to play multiplayer titles then came Pocket Monsters that required the port to use half the functionality and was Super GB enabled.

    Gunpei Yokoi did do one more console design after leaving Nintendo: the Bandai WonderSwan. It used an x86 derivative processor, the NEC V30MZ, and a similar display to the Game Boy Pocket. Advancements in boost converter technology allowed for the use of just one AA battery, which provided up to 40 hours of operating time.

      Man it's all in the name. Do you think a single adult in the USA bought a gameboy for themselves? I'd wager 95% of all sales were to shut up children. gameboy looked and seemed more user friendly and had Nintendo branding which was synonymous with video games in the west back then

    • @SnakebitSTI
      @SnakebitSTI Před 2 lety +25

      I don’t think it’s perplexing when you consider the market. There was a wave of handhelds circa 1990, with the Game Boy coming out the clear victor. Then the Nomad in 1995 and Pocket in 1996, then another wave starts in 1998 with the GB Color, Neo Geo Pocket (and later Color), WonderSwan (and later Color), and then the GBA takes over in 2001.
      Also, Pokémon. You couldn’t play Pokémon on a WonderSwan or Neo Geo Pocket, but you could on a decade old Game Boy.

    • @parlinmains
      @parlinmains Před 2 lety +3

      @@SnakebitSTI I figured it would be because of Pokemon. But on the Game Boy, not the GBA? I guess the tech wasn’t ready by then.

    • @SnakebitSTI
      @SnakebitSTI Před 2 lety +6

      @@parlinmains I think it was a lack of attempts more than a lack of technology. There kind wasn’t a 16bit handheld generation? The mid-90s got the Nomad (a portable Mega Drive not a ground-up handheld) and the Virtual Boy (not a handheld, poor battery life, and actually 32bit). Proper 16bit handhelds only arrived in 1998, with the WonderSwan and Neo Geo Pocket. Both had good battery life, making them potential threats to the Game Boy, but the Game Boy Color managed to hold them at bay until the 32bit GBA in 2001.
      Maybe if Nintendo hadn’t gone off the rails with the Virtual Boy, or if Yokoi had quit instead, maybe then we would have seen a 1995ish WonderSwan equivalent.

    When you got to the part about alkaline batteries, my reaction was "Who buys that crap?". I've been using rechargeable batteries for most of my life. Nickel-Cadmium as a kid in the 1980s and 1990s, then moving to NiMH and adding the odd Lithium-ion one in adulthood (though those always come with something and can't be used in anything else (if they can even be removed at all) because the manufacturers hate standard form-factors).
    AAA NiMH are a perennial in my house (with a few AA ones still getting some use, though nowhere near as much as they used to in the days of cassettes and CDs). I cycle through half a dozen sets of the things every couple of weeks running the wireless headphones I use with the computer. Non-rechargeable batteries would cost a fortune. Rechargeable ones get used hundreds of times before they wear out and stop holding a charge.
    Sure rechargeable batteries cost a bit more to buy, but by the time you've charged them a dozen times, you've covered the cost relative to the non-rechargeable counterpart, and from then on it's basically free until they wear out.
    I don't actually know how many charges they get, but let's call it 500 and say a set costs $20. That's about 4c per charge. If a set of non-rechargeable batteries costs a tenth as much, you're paying $2 per charge, and a cost of $1000 over the same period of time. What a waste of money!
    About the only thing that should ever be powered by a non-rechargeable battery is a smoke detector, and the only reason for that is due to how they behave as they go flat. Non-rechargeable batteries drop off in voltage gradually, while rechargeable ones go suddenly, preventing you from getting the low-battery warning.

      @@LowSpecGamer it literally does though. Please don't fight such an uphill battle. You don't make the best videos you can make. Nobody does. Video production is about making the best videos you can make with the time and resources you have. If you were afraid of lowering the quality of your videos, you'd always lose money on them. If you stand by your statement, then you also need to argue absurd things like "budgeting for your video is foolish". Figuring out how low quality your video can be without being too low quality is literally one of the biggest parts of for-profit content production. You really need to reconsider what you view "low quality" too. Unless I've greatly misunderstood the OP, he was NOT using that as a negative criticism. LTT just uploaded a video on tech quickie asking why there aren't any GPUs that are soldered on the motherboard, but failed to mention that only a decade ago, this was somewhat common on consumer motherboards. There are tons of "what about nForce" comments, but not a peep from LTT. The production is high quality, but the content is impressively low. You know about this nunace in video production though, hence why your reply is so shocking and confusing.
      And if you still disagree that "making low quality videos serves nobody", explain to me why Berd has more than a million subs. Low quality can be done with skill, and that's just about impossible to argue against as far as I can tell.

    I miss how consoles back in the day does not depend on a set lifecycle and lasted for a decade or more. Now people expect a new hardware just 3-5 years on the lifecycle asking for PRO versions. Those old consoles are still ok with just a little of imagination. Nintendo is still doing the same thing but some people expect them otherwise.

    god, i love the game boy light so much. got one of the limited edition pokemon centre tokyo ones (one of 5000!), just the handheld (luckily with the battery door) for like, $80 CAD when i was in high school. i can’t believe it’s worth as much as it is now. i have one that needs a new shell, and weirdly enough, those are being made now too. so my second game boy light will finally get to be pretty (im making a model that never got a release at all wrt screen protector + shell colour + button colour so nobody gets confused) after all this time, and it only cost me $25 for the light and another $30 years later for the new shell for the second one. the pokemon one is essentially mint, but im really excited about having a semi-custom game boy light!

    • @LowSpecGamer

    9:58 does the attack actually have the gen 1 hyper beam sound in it? Pretty cool if true. And few people seem to mention how Nintendo was in a rather tough spot with Sony taking their console market, and Pokémon provided Nintendo with just enough of a cushion to not completely fall off the map.

    I can only imagine how things could have been different if the team decided to cut out the link cable port after all, considering Pokemon ended up being such a large phenomenon that it is currently THE highest grossing media franchise in the world. Bigger than Mickey Mouse, Star Wars, Mario, Winnie the Pooh, the MCU, Harry Potter. You get the idea.
    No ability to trade between the games would have torpedoed all interest in the Gameboy Pocket.

    • @LowSpecGamer
