The screen issue is definitely delamination. It's either air or moisture between the plates that you're moving around when you press on it. I worked at a vinyl sign shop as a kid and we had to squeegee air bubbles out from under the vinyl all the time after applying it; the behaviour of the bubbles looked very similar. The best reason I can think that it appears as dark dots is because LCDs are sensitive to pressure (as well as electricity) and those bubbles are pressing against the liquid crystal, causing it to bend the light in those spots.
If you're using this with an Everdrive then it will tank the battery, the screen on it's own isn't too bad.
Like, bottleneck the battery?
@@SimplyAlonso The Everdrive just uses more power, especially the older one and the AliExpress clone of it. Combined with the screen sapping more power than a standard one your battery life takes a hit.
Other flash carts are available which are as power efficient as original games.
@@MegaTerryNutkins such as?
@@tonyhakston536 Everdrive GB X5 is good bet for an SD flash cart, older ones and clones are worse. With high capacity rechargeable cells the cheap clones are ok though
Ok, now THIS, is epic. Seriously though, every time MattKC uploads, there's about a 100% chance I'm going to watch it and enjoy it. One of my favorite content creators for sure
Especially his Lego Island videos are absolutely amazing 😂

Nice to know that you managed to fix it! While the original screen may be unsalvagable, the new backlight mod more than makes up for it.

Part 3 for the USB-C Lithium mod? At least go for a like goal in order to do so haha. Would love to see it.
Underrated creator right here. If he piled into the production value and fluffed up his videos with pulpy bullshenanigans, I have no doubt he would skyrocket in popularity, but I have so much appreciation for how genuine he is to himself and us.
Especially since he doesn't feel the need to put himself with an open mouthed over the top expression in front of a primary color explosion on the thumbnail.
Bootlicker
@@scorch527 dude thank you!! I can't even begin to describe how fucking annoying that is. Like I hate it sooo much..
Always good to have a dedicated knob

"that's right, i remember now! his name is LINUSTT!" matt really threw some shade there
When I was around 8 or 10, I had a red Game-boy Pocket that I absolutely adored. I asked my grandma to get me Pokemon Green for it, and this video reminds me of that time in my life and I thank you for it :)
wait Pokemon Green is Japan only
@@DsiPro1000 Gameboys aren't region locked. I clearly remember playing Pokemon green on my red Gameboy pocket. It makes sense to assume that it would be region locked though lol
@@randomprimary i know the gameboy is region free but how did you get a copy of green?
What i meant by Japan only was that it only was sold in japan
@@DsiPro1000 ebay dude
@@randomprimary oh cool
I still really love the darker green of the shell. It's so classy
Your videos are very inspiring and interesting. You are 100% the reason I have started seriously trying to fix my electronics and I'm seriously loving it.
Looks good, i did an ips-screen, case (Clear Extreme Green colored), bigger battery swap (800Mah) for my gba-sp -100 series. The new screem is sooo much better, i cant believe the difference,
Story time: I found my old copy of pokemon Emerald wich i had lost for around 10 years. I was excited to start playing it again, but soon noticed that the internal battery of the cartridge was dead, i ordered a new one and then i started seeing videos of these crazy gba mods. I was amazed on the quality of the screens and wanted one for my self, i know in a few years time i propably wont be playing the games again for a while, but the sheer amount of nostalgia i got from trying to research on what i would need to build my ultimate Gba-SP took the best of me and I did it. I ordered every part, waited patiently and then one day my orders started coming in. I put everything together and BAM! i had it, now i have been playing Emerald for a while on and off because of my work schedule, brings back such good memories, especially now that it's christmas time (i got the console and game as a christmas gift), I remember playing next to the christmas tree and can vividly remember the lights and the smell of the spruce. Ahh good times.
Only 10 years? Dang.. I know this is gonna sound off-topic but...

I love your channel man! It always feels so comfortable to watch your videos and I'm always excited for another upload!
0:31 I appreciate that reference
Great job! I'm so glad this Gameboy got a happy ending :')
yes mattkc really gave it the " happy ending "
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I always love how satisfying and interesting your videos are. Thank you for making such quality content that's intriguing and relaxing.
I love these videos! Repairing old electronics is just so cool to me, keep it up!
Great one buddy! As usual perfect to watch, keep it on! 🙌
Awesome! So happy that you got it fixed :)
I think the contrast wheel is the coolest part of all retro consoles tbh. Idk why, I just love it.
0:50 I've seen A LOT of dead pixels on a single screen. They were each next to each other.

Makes me so happy when u upload. Easily my favorite CZcamsr
Yay an other MattKC video! :D
Wow your channel is growing mate .. keep up the great content… ps nice jaycar battery’s lol
Legitimately one of my favorite channels.
If there is one thing 2022 needs it’s more MattKC
4:44 Laslo - Supernova starts. A man with socks and sandals appears!
Wild LTT appeared!
Great job on the overhaul!
Aw man I wish you did the USB-C mod!
What an awesome mod. MattKC will always be one of my favorite creators.
At 4:44 there is an easter egg on the gameboy where the texet says "his name is LINUSTT", pretty cool hidden, well not really but cool non the less! Nice video by the way, very epic indeed.
yoo the part 2! im so excited!
Matt, you should pick up some "Goo Gone". (Just the "Original" stuff, don't need any of the variations.) It's a citrus (yeah as in fruit) and petroleum based adhesive remover. It doesn't work for everything, but can do wonders for some of the likes of the gunk you spent cleaning off of the screen & lens with this project. (You of course have to clean *that* off too, but that is much easier.)
Yay, a MattKC video. That game boy looks very good
I wish you made longer videos! I love your voice, and I can fall asleep to your vids. Just love the content anyways. Keep it up!
One thing I've found works really well on stickers and adhesive residue is electrical contact cleaner. The one I use is "QD Contact Cleaner". It's safe on plastic and metal, and there's no oil to wash off after.
7:24 Now THIS is what I'm subbed for!
"Welcome front"

I watch JCS Criminal Psychology too. The narrator cracks me up. Christmas with Cliff had me in stitches.
1:35 JCS - Criminal Psychology! Fun times
Next time, include the sound of the protective plastic peeling, it's part of the experience :)

Hey Matt, Love the video. Any chance you'll do come game cartridge repair videos in the future? Cheers Mate.
How's your day been?
What area you planning to do for Christmas?
A really good video
This really warms my heart to see. :)
Always a pleasure.
So I binge all of your electronics Videos.
wow what quality repairs ! even better than the original device !
frankly, you're the maestro of gaming devices repairs !
7:22 the best peeling ever
Yay you uploaded I feel so happy when ever you do! Who else does?
I read MattKC on my phone notifs. Stopped everything I was doing, and tapped on it
love that your rival is called LINUSTT
Awesome, looks great!
1:34 WOW! I watch that same channel when I work, I assume it is popular, but i have never asked anyone else
His name was Linus Tech Tips!
Lol that had me rolling
I had a laptop that also had a giant spot of dead pixels in the middle. It was frustrating, but it still worked.
Thankfully my Game Boy Pocket screen is in great shape. It does have a factory defect where there is some “ghost lines” as I call them in certain scenes, basically there is faint vertical lines that line up with breaks in the pixel art like at the ends of a text box or something similar. They go from top to bottom of the screen, but aren’t very noticeable. I’ve read that most Game Boy Pocket screens are effected by this and a replacement screen Paul likely have the same issue. I also read that the problem happens even when the screens were brand new.
I once found an old og game boy in the trash and did the same thing to it, it's such a great device to have...
yo JCS is the best true crime channel, their Patreon had some excellent stuff too. it's a shame CZcams screwed them over so bad, hope they can figure something out and keep creating content because no other channel compares. like bedtime stories for horror stuff, they are next level.
I personally really like original B&W LCD screens like on the ipod classic 4th gen. when it comes to gaming this probably would improve it though lol. incredible vid
"I remember now! My foe is LINUSTT"
As an avid fan of both you and LTT I like the reference
Wonderful job!
Peefect timing! My pocket arrived yesterday, bought online! Works great, but of course, new screen, new shell, probably HDMI out,….
I did find this cool. Thank you.
An easier way to remove the clear plastic piece in front of the screen is to heat it up with a hairdryer or hot air soldering gun to melt the glue another way that doesn't need heat is to twist the shell (but not too hard or it could break).
I just binge-watched all your content and now I'm lost.. Like finishing your favourite anime and now I'm just sitting here staring at a wall :(
thanks a lot! it's made building my own super easy
7:27 - Play the "Take it off, slowly" music Techmoan uses every time he peels off plastic covers from other electronics!
JCS is also my background noise of choice. Nice taste Matt.
Gameboy Pocket HD!
love how seemingly the whole worlds listens to jcs while doing stuff
btw jcs has a second channel under the same name, even more vids on that channel
The new LCD is simply perfect! wish I haven't sold my GB Pocket.
JCS Criminal psychology shoutout!!! Cool to know that I'm not the only one who watches interrogation videos :o
I don't know how i found you, but i like your Videos.
oh, so im not the only one binging JCS videos lately? cool. lol
I'd be really curious to see what one of those black and white gameboys would look like with an OLED in it. I'd bet it would be super crisp and clean, and the blacks would be really cool as well.
Nice work.
If you got this Gameboy from someone in Brisbane, I swear this is my childhood GB Pocket. I would love it back
The way the fix works, my guess is this is related to magnetism and the cover is just gathering dust at the spot where it's concentrated. Damage, usage and time would be explained by this. So it's just very tightly wrapped garbage. A hard scrub takes it away.
That spreading virus looking thing is mold in between the screen, as the glue holding the LCD together begins to degrade, thus, letting moisture in
i really want a part 3 with more mods.
"Welcome.. ffffront.." I laughed way to hard at this
Like how binging JCS has become popular now, they are so fascinating.
3:10 Don't worry too much. From the looks of the "Nintendo" logo on the case it's most likely NOT an original shell. It's probably from when duplicate plastic molds weren't as good as they could be today.
Yes, you can also see how there is an hole as a power led indicator despite the board not having a led in the first place
@@mint_kyuu99 it’s an oem shell
That’s definitely an OEM shell it looks identical to my GBP which has its original shell.
@@mint_kyuu99 either the LED was removed, or this isn’t the original shell for this GBP. I do believe it is an OEM shell though.
@@EvilTurkeySlices Oh really? Odd, before the mod it still didn't had it, and i guessed that it was an earlier board (from a console that didn't had a led), but i didn't think that it was put into a og shell that had a led spot
Always a treat to see that red dot, cheers 👍
You got me intersted in fixing restoring this kind of stuff. My little sister is trying to get me to fix an old black and white video radio (CRT tv with a line, so this will be interesting)
careful with CRTs, them's some high voltages
@@m.f.3347 just discharge them before working with it or just leave it for a few days, it isn't too hard if you know what you are doing
Funny enough, I have a GB pocket with a broken screen. Where did you get your Gameboy pocket screen?
P.s. I love your videos, you inspired me to do what you are doing!
The fuckin Chad Warden reference got me. Liked and subbed.
You went from not wanting to modify a little plastic switch to hacking up the case really quick.
Nice video!! what Screen you used in this video please? Thanks
One thing I discovered is acetone does wonders removing glue residue. Just have to be careful because it eats more than just glue residue. I mean, it's nearly immediate. I did the same thing as you, using isopropyl alcohol, but there's just no comparison.
Acetone will melt the plastics. It *MAY* be okay to use on the inside of the case if you are very careful, but it will certainly ruin the lens.
Acetone free nail polish remover will take that adhesive off with far less effort than the wd-40. Actual Acetone will melt the plastic however, found out the hard way.
PLEASE do part 3 for the chargeable battery!!!
