As further explanation, it's because pearls are biological in origin, they're not actually gemstones. They're basically layers upon layers of material made to isolate a foreign contaminant. Even humans have similar systems, although they don't make pearls, like the development of tonsil stones or the way your immune system responds to tattoos.

Yeah, no kidding... Pink/Rose and all of her secrets... All that makes us see how much of a grey character Rose really was. On one side, she was the leader of the Crystal Gems, the one that liberated Earth and had a profound love for everything that was alive, especially humans. But then we have her other side, the one that keeps all of her secrets and sins (which are quite a few and intense).
And why pearl hates eating things. It just reminds her of what she had to do. "Shatter" her diamond.

After months of waiting we have finally reached *the* major episode, which is also my favorite. Also, Fun fact: if you rewatch the show, you'll find that every time someone talked about Pink's shattering, Pearl just put her hand on her mouth, from the memory of Pink ordering her to never speak of it again. It's amazing discovering from how soon this was implied in season one.

I forget the episode, but there was a flashback of sorts that showed Pearl always jumping in front of any attack that might even threaten to poof Rose Quartz. Until the Pink Reveal it was presumed that Pearl was just that devoted to Rose, but it was not just that. She had to be certain that Rose was never poofed as it would reveal her as a diamond.

after watching it it made me realize why Pearl was so angry about the episode where she found out Rose had a Lion “She never kept everything from me” because she was the only one who knew about her being A Diamond, and also the one where Pearl taught Connie how to fight, since if Rose was shattered everyone would see what her gem looked like that’s why Pearl protected her over logic

A little story about this, Lapis latam VA was a fandubber who got into the show cause she loves to sing
Through the series she relate to Lapi's depression and social problems while being in the series
It took her five seasons to finally sing, and that song encapsulates all her feelings that felt
a little bit after that, she retired from VA and became a streamer, she came back for lapis episode in SU future and Why so blue was like a book ending for her story being finally happy after so many years

The synapsis of this episode was “Pearl asks Steven to find her phone” also that distant shore is so underrated
Greg Universe's three step program to finding happiness:
1. Climb a fence.
2. Meet a Diamond.
3. Repeat.
The first time he did it, he got laid by a thicc diamond. The second time he almost got laid by 20 gorgeous men and women.
Steven saying that Amethyst is the most mature crystal gem when he found out she was trying the cheer him up all along is probably one of the best moments
And yet so true... and easily explainable. Amethyst was the only Crystal Gem that didn't have any connection to Pink Diamond. She was not around to ever consider Pink Diamond a "villain". She only met Rose as she was... just Rose. So the reveal that Rose and Pink were the same person, even if it shocked her (as it shocked all of us), didn't quite affect her, unlike Garnet. So she actually doing everything to comfort Steven and cheer him up only showed how much she had matured.

I hate that line because it is definitely garnet who is the most mature. Steven acts like all the jasper stuff, the proofing muliple times, the pranks,the general irresponsibly she has,and the constant self depricatin didn't happen. Like one moment of clarity makes her so much more mature.
We'd known for a while that there was something fishy about the official story that Rose Quartz had killed Pink Diamond. There were a lot of fan theories - plenty thought that Pink wasn't actually killed, that it was actually Pearl who did it, that somehow Rose actually was Pink. The big twist is that, somehow, all three of these turned out to be true.😊
And "The Trial" only validated all those plotholes in the story of Pink Diamond's shattering. Blue Diamond and her Zircon where the only ones to ever questioning it. No one ever stopped to consider how a simple Quartz soldier was able to get near and shatter the most powerful type of Gem... one that was heavily guarded by many powerful soldiers and with Sapphires that could predict every outcome. The Zircon that defended Steven was right: only a Diamond could shatter another Diamond... even if it didn't happen quite literally.
I remember that one of the first theories people ever thought was the Rise was link Diamond. Then after the second season most people thought it was imposible. 😂

@@ivanelugo I'll admit it: I was one of those people. I did not believe it was possible for Gems to change their gemstone - or fake it, as the case may be. I probably should have paid more attention to the time Amethyst successfully disguised herself as a Jasper.
My theory at the time was Yellow Diamond killed Pink because she was getting very defensive and angry at the court hearing. I thought "this is very fishy behavior. Could she have ordered Pink out of her palanquin and killed her?" It just made too much sense at the time. So when the big reveal happened I was shocked
About Greg knowing: in one of the episodes, Greg said: "She felt like she had to confess everything to me, but I said "The past is the past"." I feel like she was going to tell him, but then he said that and she decided not to.

I just remembered one thing... Remember when Garnet told Steven how Ruby and Sapphire met? In Sapphire's original prediction, the rebellion would end with Rose and Pearl's defeat. It was only because Ruby saved her and then the two fused that prediction didn't come true. That only shows how much important Garnet really is. If Garnet wasn't formed, Rose would lose and her secret would be reveal to the other Diamonds, meaning that the Earth would be colonized and Pink would be punished for her actions. There's actually an AU that shows exactly that.
Now you see why Pearl always got so upset whenever she found out something that Rose had never told her. In her mind, if Rose/Pink trusted her with the biggest secret of all, it doesn't make sense that she would've hidden anything else from her.
Also, it's fun to rewatch the show up to this point and notice all the times Pearl covered her mouth with her hands while she was upset. In a bunch of those moments, she wanted to say something about Rose/Pink but couldn't.
Wanna know something that makes "The Question" even cuter? Three months after the episode first aired, Erica Luttrell, the voice of Sapphire, proposed to her girlfriend. She said yes.

Another thing that makes "The Question" even greater is that it shows how important Garnet really was. Sapphire's original prediction was that Rose and Pearl would lose there and, if that happened, Pink's secret would be revealed. The only reason that didn't happen was because Ruby saved Sapphire and the two fused for the first time.
Even though you guys predicted it a while back, this reveal still shook most - if not, all - of the fandom. By the end of the episode at the premiere, as the credits played, Cartoon Network teased the following episode, and Sapphire’s reaction was scarring.
They did consider the possibility, yes. But the fact Rose has been presented as such a benevolent character that could do no wrong (even if she kept secrets), they never considered it to be actually true when there were other possibilities that could explain the all Pink Diamond's shattering plot.
Rewatching everything prior to “A Single Pale Rose” is so gut-wrenching and bittersweet, because then it re-contexualizes all of Pearl’s actions and words. Things like “If Rose had a Lion, I would have known about it!” We realize why Pearl was always so defensive and adamant about her knowing all Rose’s secrets, because just like Blue Pearl and Yellow Pearl, she would’ve been with her Diamond every step of the way. It’s why she told Connie to defend Steven at all costs, even if she’d have to forfeit her own life. Pearl was created specifically to serve Pink, so for Pink to just leave her, and for her to be left with this void of not being able to serve Pink anymore, must’ve been really tough for her.
The way you guys felt about Pearl is how I felt about Amethyst. At the start of the show I couldn't stand her, but near the end she became my second favorite character.
Yeah, Pearl and Amethyst were annoying in their own way: Pearl with her uptight demeanor and Amethyst with her childish behavior (despite it was quite funny). I think what really irritated me the most was their constant arguing, another reason for me to love "On the Run", as that was the episode that really helped the two of them to finally get along.
Same I felt this way for both of them especially amethyst but now she is my favorite from the main three crystal gems (my fav character is Steven, second is peridot, third is lion and fourth is onion then the 3 main crystal gems then lapis) honestly all of them grew and developed that i love them all sm
Pearl could've been so much worse tbh. Like imagine doing all those things for your Diamond, keeping her secrets, spending every moment with her, fusing together, fighting together, being the closest you could ever be with a person, only to get put in a situationship for years when she hooks up with some random human and then losing her entirely because she one day decides to have a baby and they both can't exist at the same time, so it's bye-bye permanently. I'd be a SUPERVILLAIN. Pearl handle that whole mess with grace cause I would've been a menace fr.

They FINALLY got to A Single Pale Rose 😭😭😭😭😭 I’ve been waiting for this since they started theorizing about Rose.
ITS BEEN A GREAT JOURNEY, we’re finally on the full batch of story episodes
Amethyst's arc is easily my favorite out of the main gems(excluding steven). It felt the most relatable by far for me (not to say the others werent relatable). And it had multiple stand-out moments. When she made up with pearl and hugged her in On The Run, when she fought steven and realized that steven and her were in kind of the same situation in Steven vs Amethyst, when she realizes that she can rely on steven and vice versa in Earthlings, leading to my favorite fusion besides stevonnie(and i love that steven and amethyst were noticably closer after this, even though she was arguably already the closest to steven), and here where she is the only one actively trying to not put any pressure on steven and help him, showing that she truly has matured. I will never understand how some people can hate her
A Single Pale Rose is great but I love the arc that it starts. Rose saying to Pearl "DON'T EVER STOP" makes me so emotional every time, as does Amethyst's "I am NOT going to fall apart on you" being one of my favorite moments in the whole show. That moment really solidified Amethyst as my favorite of the main crystal gems.
I love the specific plot point where a character is characterised as not having a certain trait, and then they have that trait, without it actually contradicting their character.
Amethyst has always been seen as immature. That's her character. In this episode, she still goofs off, still tells jokes, still nopes out of dealing with hard subjects, still eats things that aren't food, none of that has changed. The reason she is called mature isn't because her immature traits don't exist, it's because there's other aspects of maturity that she *has* exhibited all this time. Amethyst has always been a friend, always tried to keep the mood light. And here we are shown clearly that she's dealing with her emotional problems herself, not because she's bottling it up but because she recognizes that Steven is under a lot of pressure already and wants to help him. So yeah.
And thus the reason why, WAY back in Season 1, Pearl refused to shapeshift for Steven Tag alongside Garnet and Amethyst, is revealed. It’s because she’s equated shapeshifting to this traumatic lie she and Pink created nearly 6,000 years ago. I think it’s also a reason why she’d always scoff at Amethyst for being able to shapeshift so casually; how does SHE get to do that and enjoy, but Pearl herself can’t, know what I mean?

This episode is what people ment when they said "Pearl isn't an aswhole" she really means it when she says rose kept secrets from everyone BUT her, she was with her before the revelion, from the start, she felt like the closest gem to Rose, because she knew the truth.
Also, there is this one hint on like, season one, when pearl is having a breakdown confusing steven with rose, and she projects an image of rose speaking with her, and rose says "My Pearl"
Also, about the war, pink didn't send troups to fight the crystal gems, she didn't want to, that was blue and yellow "helping the young diamond with their first resistance". She did try speaking with them, but it all came out wrong. "I want to conserve the life on earth" became "ok, we are giving you a zoo" that then became "pink diamond had this horrible zoo to keep humans". When she tried to "fight" it was considered just a tantrum, like a child, and she was "punished" for it. At the end, to be taken seriously, she decided to have an alternative persona (rose) to actually be considered a threat and to actually be able to fight for earth
Also also, yeah, the corruption, no one freacking saw that one coming, not even pink. But it makes sense, it was "revenge" for taking pinks life
A Single Pale Rose 🥀 is the episode that answers everything in the series. One of the most emotional but rewarding episodes in animation history
36:09 Yellow also acts as a parental figure to Pink just in a different way. That's shown in the Jungle Moon dream. Blue is a mediator parent, while Yellow is a disciplinarian. Blue talks to Pink with a kind of patronizing fluff while Yellow is more 'no nonsense, act like a Diamond'. This makes sense considering what their roles seemed to be in flashbacks: Blue was a kind of diplomat while Yellow was a military leader. Also in 'What's the Use of Feeling Blue?', Yellow cries for Pink, almost like a parent mourning their child.
Pearl was a good character from the start. A lot of the time people misconstrue "bad person" with "bad character." Pearl was exactly what you'd expect her to be based on what you now know in retrospect. She was stuffy, obsessed with order, standoffish toward humans (even Steven), bitter, and always worried. These are direct products of her past, her loss of Rose to Greg, Rose's "death" and her blaming it on humanity in a sense, her past as Pink Diamond's pearl, sworn to a secret she could never tell anyone no matter how much she tried. She was not a nice person and it makes sense once you understand why, and she changed for the better when she finally began to let go of her issues.

If you think about it, its only thanks to Ronaldo that Steven found out about Rose's identity, if he didn't showed Steven the barn, he wouldn't have dreamed about Pearl poofing Rose and interrogated her about the truth...
This reveal can make Pearl’s behavior in previous episodes so much more clear. She’s so loyal to Rose because she IS Rose’s Pearl, she is programmed to be that way. She struggled the hardest with the loss of Rose for the same reason. She lashes out at the others because they don’t “understand Rose” like she did - imagine carrying that secret for eons and never being able to tell anyone.
I already loved Lapis, then when I first heard “Distant Shore”, I was like: “SHE FINALLY GOT A SONG!” Jennifer Paz was spectacular! 💙🩵💧💎
One of my favorite little details is on Ruby’s note for Sapphire. She ran out of space to write Sapphire’s full name because Sapphire is the one that is usually looking ahead while Ruby tends to focus on moment to moment.
In defense of the Townie episodes, I think they serve a great reminder of Steven’s human side, the key reason Rose justified changing her shape in the first place. she wanted him to experience that life & we see throughout the show how important it is for Steven to keep in touch with that human Beach City kid side. I always see his journey as the more Steven learns & interacts with gems as maturing him faster than he really should be & I think this episode batch the one with Amethyst focusing on his feelings goes with that concept as well. Also, ik alot of fans partly blame CN for the weird order & weird run of SU but I think the SU team could have still worked the balance of main story & townie episodes better.
"Can`t go back" is one of my favorite episodes! Lapis is my favorite gem character and how beautiful she is in this series.

omg i don't know if this is a known fact but literally for a second at 6:39 - 6:40 you can hear chords from that song pearl sang to connie during their training montage (you do it for her) while pearls about to stab pink. oh my goodness!!!! literally all my hairs stood up, chills all round what a link!!, i've never felt more amazed at such a small detail!

That one episode explains so much of Pears odd behaviors. Pearl doesn't like to shapeshift. She doesn't like to eat/swallow things. She would stutter and cover her mouth when someone was talking about Pink Diamond.
i think the reason they havent been having a "stevens a diamond" revelation is cause throughout the series theyve been sayin over and over and over steven is steven not rose, so at this point to them its no different. steven is steven not pink diamond and by association that means hes not a diamond to them, not to mention i dont think any of them are in a mindset to even consider that possibility atm

Something that blew my mind was when I read that the reveal of Rose being pink also hinted at Pink having some innate powers she was not aware of. Like how Pearl physically could not talk about the fake shattering after telling her to never speak about it. Or how we never see Garnet ask a question ever in this whole show after Rose/Pink told her to 'never question this, ever'.
honestly what happened between Pearl and Pink Diamond broke my heart for Pearl. for thousands of years she was always with Pink Diamond and was the only gem who knew her secret. she prided herself in knowing all of Rose's secrets, and it makes sense why she broke down the way that she did when she found out Rose kept lion a secret. but when Rose chose Greg over Pearl, it reminded me of an old friend of mine. she was married for 14 years and her husband cheated on her, so she had to learn how to go on living without him, and it was very hard for her because she invested so much of her time and energy into their relationship. i think that's a fair analogy even though Rose and Pearl were never married or even an official couple. it was definitely one sided, but the analogy works i think because of how much time and energy was put into Rose and how Pearl had to go on living without her

I always found it hella hilarious, the ep20. That it was Amethyst out of everyone who sat Steven down and talked with him about shit. That she was secretly most mature of them all.
The way I see it is Rose could never love pearl the same because in her mind she would always wonder if it’s just because she was her Diamond while Greg was this free spirit that only knew this version of her. Not that I think Pearl loved her because she was her diamond but there would always be that doubt

I genuinely LOVE Pink Diamond, her story of being stuck in the dynamic of a Diamond, constantly disrespected by the others, and idolized by everyone else. She had no equal relationships.But she so desperately craved that.
She gets Earth and sees the beauty in the Earth and desperately wants to save it. Then she meets Garnet and sees she's not alone in needing to escape the Diamond Authority. She wants to save Garnet and Bismuth and all other gems who don't fit in their society. Then after realizing that the figure Pink Diamond needs to go after her battle with Bismuth.
But she can't shatter herself. So she gives EVERYTHING she had as a diamond up. Plus, if she hadn't escaped when she did, she would've had to shoot at her own gens during the corruption. Yet in the end, only the Earth and her two friends were saved. It's so tragic. I love her.
It was just understood that Steven "is" Pink Diamond, as they already knew he "is" Rose.
Here we go! My favorite time of the week! Boom called it way back when!!! It was a great prediction!
If you watched the series again you will see how many things will now make so much sense
These episodes give so much context to Pearl’s character. In ‘On the Run’ she tells Amethyst ‘you’re not a mistake, you’re just a byproduct of a mistake’ or something along the line and it sounds incredibly insensitive but what she’s trying to say is ‘you didn’t do anything ! Me and Rose built this place, we did ! I am to blame’ but she physically can’t because of her oath. It’s heartbreaking in hindsight.
Or Pearl’s fidgetiness / obsessiveness in the early seasons stemming from having so many secrets to keep to herself.
Remember Ucle Grandpa episode he said that Steven has a diamon 😂
Greg has the most powerful rizz in the universe; a Diamond fell in love with him and had a baby with him.
And Pearl's character development is also a thing of beauty in this show: she may not have been the most likeable in S1, but she was keeping a HUGE secret, per Pink's order.
I do love Amethyst's scene with Steven after A Single Pale Rose, that she had reached such a maturity that she could set aside her own emotional turnoil to focus on someone important to her.
Something about them saying "figure it out figure it out" right agyer Amethyst says "you have her gem, it's right there under your shirt." Is so funny

Remember the crossover with Uncle Grampa? UG told Steven that he need to polish his gem sometimes, and the gems that need to be polished are diamonds
I relate to Lapis/ Cos I lived through war actions and stil it is really hard with everything... Loud noises freak me out and all...you never certain of anything...I would never want that expirience again...

It still amazes me how Garnet saved the rebellion. Sapphire said that once she was poofed, the rebellion would end. Rose/Pink would have been captured and discovered, and god only knows what would’ve happened to them afterwards. Garnets birth saved the rebellion.
This is also why Pearl always got very upset when Amethyst shape shift like every second...
Steven has finally learned that Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond. Pearl has kept it as a secret for many years. This was one of the most hardest and most emotional episodes in the show. It might have been hard for Steven and the Crystal Gems

I know the obvious bomb drop comes from the revelation of Rose as Pink Diamond, but upon rewatch, the episode that hit me the most out of this set was the last one. Amethyst finally realizing just how much trauma dumping they do to Steven, how they expect him to resolve their thousands of years of issues, and refusing to add any more to it, is incredible. Somewhere along the way, Steven got what he wanted, he started being recognized as a valued member of the Crystal Gems, and subconsciously, they started relying on him TOO much. Nobody ever really tried to check in with Steven and ask how he felt because that's what HE was doing for THEM. Amethyst referring to herself as an adult, making a Gurren Lagann-style pointing to the sky declaration that she was Steven's friend and she would keep it together to help him, that's the GOOD SHIT.
You guys: Lapis is definitely the character with the most trauma

I would lile to point out that throughout the series that Steven could use any gem tech just by touching it.
Almost as if his gem overrode any passwords or securities.
All the diamonds have the exact same age they appeared all together at the beginning,pink diamond isn't exactly the weakest in power she was the weakest in attitude.

Pausing at the half-way point in this video just to say this was so very satisfying! No, you didn't pre-watch - but you came to a completed project knowing it would get the reputation it has and you are adults talking it over as you watch, looking for the clues (which are everywhere - like the pink diamond on Pearl's spacesuit way back when). As a fan, we didn't know what was to come - I was offline in those years so I only heard the vaguest rumors about fan theories before they happened - and at best I might have my husband there to watch with me but it was mostly a very solitary viewing experience. That's why I love watching reaction videos.... y'all have the conversations I wish I could have had with a bunch of friends. I'm pretty sure I'm old enough to be your mother so I watch these videos like my kid has his friends over and I am POSITIVELY DELIGHTED to see how much you're getting out of the show. The fandom went insane blaming Rose/Pink for a war that wouldn't exist if Yellow/Blue/White weren't tyrants. I'll never not be floored by this. I don't like how she treated Pearl and Bismuth, but she was right to rebel and liberate the gems. She had no choice, because her cause was just. Sapphire's reaction is also insane for this reason. Her and Ruby's relationship and Garnet's existence has nothing to do with Rose being who she said she was or not. They fought for the cause and not for Rose riiiight. So what's the problem. Greg has the right idea. Who she was before DOESN'T MATTER.

I agree, a story about someone who tries to escape her family life shouldn't be shamed for changing her name and appearance, especially since it was for the greater good. It's the only time I feel like a wrong lesson was in their. Sapphire has a right to be upset but Rose isn't evil because of it.

It explains also why Pearl was so defensive when it came to Rose and her relationship with Rose. In a way she created Rose. She gave the idea to Pink to create Rose. Without her Rose might have never existed, without her she may have never explored the Earth and fell in love with it, she might have never decided to stay there and protect it. That is why Pearl feels that way when Rose not only chooses Greg, but decides to give up herself to create Steven. Pearl is not a bad character, not even Pearl from S1, she is a flawed character that needed to make a lot of self growth, that doesn't make her a bad gem or a bad character; to me it makes her a great character actually.

I just want to point out, even if Pink was small compared to her fellow Diamonds, she was huge in comparison to every normal gem. Pearl and Garnet are smaller than her Rose form, which is only the half of her Pink Diamond form. So she’s very huge still.

Logically speaking, it made no sense. Pink Diamond's gem, which has at least 15 facets from a top-down view, magically changes to look exactly like a Rose Quartz gem, which only has 6.
