I love the fact that Spinel was made to be as obnoxious as they could in order to make one understand why Pink Diamond left her, but instead, ppl felt in love with her. I blame Sarah Stiles

Spinel's backstory highlights one of the biggest tragedies of Pink Diamond - she never understood how much she meant to everyone else.
She got with Greg and had Steven - not understanding how she was breaking Pearl's heart and hurting Garnet and Amethyst.
She faked her own shattering, because she thought the other diamonds didn't care about her - causing the Corruption and devastating her own loyal gems and Yellow & Blue.
She told Spinel to stand very still, expecting her to get bored and leave eventually - not realising just how devoted Spinel was.
Pink Diamond thought very little of herself and that was very much the other Diamonds fault, but that self-hatred was something she projected back outwards, believing everyone else thought as little of her as she thought of herself.

Very correct. It was how it looked like if you actually payed attention to her character lol but it was also confirmed by the book. Pink Diamond's self esteem is so low that even she wouldn't trust herself with decisions.
perfect summation of her character! she’s truly the complete opposite of white diamond; white put herself on a pedestal and viewed everyone else as beneath her, while pink/rose put everyone else on a pedestal and viewed herself as beneath them.
It's probably why Pink becomes obsessed with the notion of change as she learns about earth, humanity, etc. and that reflects how she feels about herself. She fears that she will never grow to be better. It's why she becomes excited at the prospect of having Steven even at the cost of her own life (which is near worthless by her own measure), the notion of making a person, a gem that can change, grow, and become better where she cannot.
I love how the diamonds went from intergalactic merciless overlords to "your racist aunties who are trying to do better but haven't nailed it yet"

Well... they got better... Having in consideration how they used to be, I say they went through an amazing development. Yellow dismantled her army and is controlling well her temper, Blue is no longer depressed and making everyone else cry and White (even if strugling) is trying her best to treat everyone else with equality.
Fun fact: Steven's VA used to deepen his voice in season 1, but for the last season he had to make it higher. So midway through the show is his regular octaves. The creators aged him up to around his VA's age so he didn't have to strain his voice!

I swear, it's crazy to think that Zach had remained Steven's voice actor throughout the entire series despite that he went through puberty as the show went on.

I swear, ever since the movie had come out, people have been leaving comments on the Steven Universe episodes that came before the movie talking about how Spinel was still waiting in the garden. You can never see the show the same way again after watching the movie.

28:45 That was intentional from Rebecca Sugar. In a book that was released after Steven Universe future, it was revealed that the Diamonds were created with the principle of enantiodromia; a concept that says that any extreme power will unconsciously produce its opposite. Yellow always thought of herself as very strong, when, in reality, she was very weak, collapsing any time she opened herself to her feelings of grief and guilt. Blue always thought that she was the most empathetic of the four thanks to her powers, but she never cared for anyone other than herself; when confronting the crystal gems in Garnet's wedding, she was doing it for her, not for Pink. White saw herself as flawless and and above everyone else, but she is the most imperfect of the Diamonds, becoming speechless the moment someone who she saw as beneath her criticizes her. And Pink always thought that she was extremely weak, when in fact she was so strong that she ended up hurting and destroying everyone else's life, to the point of becoming very self-destructive.
And even when she became Rose, Pink never quite changed. It's understandable she would keep her lie, since that was what brought the Crystal Gems together, but if you notice, she still never took anything serious and took everything and everyone for granted. The very fact that she decided to have a child, knowing she would cease to exist, without even considering the consequences that would have later on, both to her kid and to her loved ones, is proof of that. I mean, both Pearl and Greg got heartbroken... and Steven was the one that had to clean up the mess his mother left behind.
Exactly and I think they made the perfect concept of never showing her being alive and with Steven and making it seem like everyone needed and misses her but she will forever be gone and we will have to live with that
The scene where Peridot frets over loosing her character development is so funny cause not only does it break the fourth wall, but it also fits her character considering that might have been something she’s picked up from all the shows she’s watched on earth.
Is it still a 4th wall break if the thing that is being referenced exists in the world's reality?

Fun facts about Steg: Steg seems to be a fusion of mainly Steven's floating and strength powers rather than his shields, and as a fusion he has the power to lift up those around him too! Not only that, but his voice actor in real life is married to the woman who voices Opal, making their song a duet between couples in studio!
They're not married actually, but they did form a rock duo band together
Spinel poofed out of grief. Her pain was so intense that her body physically couldn’t handle it. And there’s a popular theory that the same thing actually happened to Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl after Rose passed her Gem on to Steven

Spinel is such an amazing villain. Harley Quinn levels of loveably psychotic, "Her Other Friends." is a banger villain song, I love her old timey animation stretchy limbs, and she has one of the saddest backstories of any cartoon villain. Dark fact: Rebecca explained why Spinel's gem flipped, was because she felt so many emotions in the moment she realized the truth, almost being on the verge of a "s***ide" of her light form.

So instead she decided to become a school sh*oter and off Pink and all her friends
I also heard she based Spinel of something she lived. When she was a girl she lost a teddy bear she had, when she found it a year later the bear had a spot bleached by the sun.

I love that in Steven Universe you are led to believe he has healing spit as opposed to his mother's healing tears, but in reality he has healing kisses, because he doesn't cry over losses, he kisses to make things better.

He can use healing tears, but it’s not his natural way of using it, as seen in the episode he unlocks his “healing spit” where the entire plot shows him failing to use healing tears
They said they were gonna cancel the show because of the wedding, but rebecca sugar fought for it and they ended up cancelling the show, but then they remembered that steven universe is one of the most succesful shows on cartoon network and they gave rebecca the chance to develop a movie and another series to wrap everything up.
They are giant idiots tbh. Like stu could have gone on for ages. There's a billion fuses we never got to see. And I feel like future is lacking. The final diamond resolution could have been seasons away and built up to and delivered properly, instead of how we got it. I honestly didn't know that the wedding was why it was cancelled and that makes me even madder. Giant idiots.
Bonus points for putting the more “masculine” Ruby in a dress, and the more “feminine” Sapphire in a suit, just as an extra middle finger to the countries that Dub Ruby into a man.

The Diamonds in this movie are like THOSE aunts or THOSE grandparents. You love them to death, but they're kinda exhausting to be around and somehow everytime you go visit them to just drop something off or pick something up real quick you somehow end up staying there for an hour even though you absolutely do not have that kinda time

I’m not 100% sure why but i’m pretty sure they used this to show Blue and Pinks close relationships compared to the other diamonds
If you remember, it was Blue who created the Human Zoo and that was because Pink told her she wanted to preserve the life on Earth. Neither Yellow nor White would even consent on that. But Blue had a special attachment to Pink, even if, in the end, she would still disregard her feelings. Steven even made that comment when Blue came to talk to him after he and Connie were placed in that tower, where he asked how many times Blue (and the others) made her cry. And that was enough to convince Blue of the wrongs she was doing, since that moment made her realize how she and the other Diamonds failed Pink and that was the reason why she left.
Fun fact: in adventure time Marceline sings a song that was written for spinel or at least about this moment. Rebecca wrote it bc of a stuff toy she left behind when she was younger in the garden... the same way rose left spinel and how marceline has hanbo

The movie was fantastic. The songs were fun, and memorable, love how Spinel was animated. Also, spinel deserved better
She really did, unfortunately Pink wasn't mature enough to understand the ramifications of her actions at that point. Shame Spinel never got to see her at her best even if that too wasn't perfect.
29:18 It's interesting that you bring this up because this is the exact inspiration for Spinel's character. A plush that Rebecca Sugar left in her garden one day and when she came across it again she was struck by how it faded through time despite it still being in the exact same place.
This story is also the inspiration to the "everything stays" song from Adventure Time special "Stakes"

Being abandoned by the being you quite literally were made for really does a number on ya. Spinel was definitely my favorite character in the movie.
Spinel was honestly the best part of the movie for me. Seeing how she is a rubber hose inspired character, what role she played in the film really made her stand out from the crowd. And her song (“Other Fiends”) is an unforgettable tune.

I love how Rose Quartz started the series a perfect saint and ended up being the most flawed characters. She was worshiped by Pearl and idolized by Garnet as told and defended the legacy of Rose Quartz to the off-colors on Lars' ship and even came apart when she found out Rose was Pink Diamond. For Amethyst, she was all but a mother. And slowly that prefect image was shattered. It isn't Rose Quartz story anymore, its Stevens, and how he had to live with his mothers legacy. For Pink, it is shown how she was viewed and treated by the other Diamonds. With White, she was talking at Steven and not talking to Steven. When White was done, Steven was just sent to Pinks room. When he was talking to Yellow about it, she remarked 'two and a half words, thats a record'. She wasn't listened too. When Stevonnie appeared at the ball, Yellow physically grabbed and shut her in a room. When he was talking to Blue about it, he asked 'how many times did you make her cry'. Was Pink physically abused .... maybe. Was she mentally abused and neglected ... yes. Pearl explained how Pink wanted to stop the colony on Earth, but Blue and Yellow would not listen. No one listened to her. She was never allowed to have a voice. She couldn't really start her life over again on Earth as Pink Diamond. She escaped into Rose. As human adults, we can choose to block family members we no long wish to have contact with. We can move 1000 miles away. We can surround ourselves with people who love us, listen and support us. We can get away, but Pink couldn't. The only way she could stop it was if Pink was no longer around. Rose bubbled Bismuth for wanting to shatter a Diamond. She abandoned Spinel in the garden. She lied to her closest friends about who she was ( except for Pearl ). Steven Universe is an outstanding show (IMO) due to all the social aspects they covered. For those dealing with unequated love, jealousy, attraction, immaturity, neglect or any of the topics the show covered, there is a lesson for each. Well done Rebecca.
If you guys were confused how Spinel was able to get access to weapons it’s bc since she was pink diamonds best friend she had access to her things. Her form had changed bc she self poofed due to all the sadness she felt after finding out pink left her forever and lied to her.

It definitely is an valid excuse I don't know what you even mean by that, no matter how long you do something you're not going to be very good if you don't keep up the practice, and they didn't need to fight for a couple of years after the Wars ended.
Amethyst was never much of a fighter, she's deffinitely less trained than the others.

Spinel’s design is based on 1900s rubber hose animated characters but there are a few other references that she makes like she is like a court jester so she is like Harley Quinn, originally her head was going to be heart shaped which speaking of notice her heart shaped pig tails are like Mickey Mouse’s ears which no matter which way she turns her ear they remain the same, when fighting she stretches like Luffy from One Piece (ex using Gum-Gum Giant Pistol & there were 2 other references to the series like there was a guy dressed like Doflamingo & Steven uses barriers on his fist like Bartolomeo), her scythe attacks are similar to Maka from Soul Eater, & when she walks it squeaks like SpongeBob’s does
- Steven & Greg’s fusion is called Steg (which totally sounds like a rock star name) is voiced by Ted Leo a singer & musician who is the lead guitarist of the band called Ted Leo & the Pharmacists (great songs) & he was originally going to be called Mr. Multiverse & had a spiky Mohawk, but even more interesting is that his duet with Opel was inspired by the fact that her voice actor Aimee Mann & Ted Leo are both in a band called The Both

I have a theory that the reason Pink Diamond's gem was upside in comparison to White's, is that she had a meltdown so strong and devastating like Spinel's, her gem turned upside down.
Pink Diamond's gem didn't turn upside down, it went vertical so only the flat side was showing.

Spinel's backstory is just so sad and because of this, this was the point where it started to divide the su fandom. Some people still love pink but some were starting to hate pink so much because of everything she did in the past. But what some people keep forgetting is that we have been seeing pink/rose's development in reverse, yes pink freaking sucked in the past, she was so immature, stupid and horrible. But after meeting greg and starting to know him, in the episode "we need to talk", that was the point where she finally started to understand greg and his feelings. She hasn't treated everyone else's feelings seriously and greg was the one who changed her for the better.
Also what i love about spinel and steven's final fight, he didn't psychically tried to hurt her, instead he was countering her attacks with defense, and because of that this actually helped spinel to let everything out, which lead her to finally talk to steven as she cried. I'm glad she didn't got shattered, she really deserves better 😊
I don’t understand how ppl can still blame pink and hate her actively even after she stop doing what she did started to do better this is exactly like how ppl treated princess bubble gum in adventure time they act like character never get better and release their past and mistakes
@@elysia6524 exactly! Yes it upsets me for what pink did, but she eventually changed for the better thanks to Greg. She became better during her final years on earth. People just need to understand that her development was shown reverse. Is pink perfect? No. But she was a pretty well written black and white character

I think CN backpedaled so fast after canceling SU because viewership for the show went crazy during the final season. Especially for the Wanted (trial), Stranded (jungle moon), and Change Your Mind events. They realized canceling their biggest moneymaker probably wasn't a good idea.
Also, Steven's VA has an album called A Picture Perfect Hollywood Heartbreak, which showcases a lot more of his singing. It's really good and I think Connie's VA is also on one of the songs.

"Leaving your old toys behind" Kind of funny he says that cause that was one of Rebecca's old memorys/source for this, with a bunny doll she lost until one year later just found out and it got faded in one side. Also knowing Spinnels past and how sad it is it's a bit messed up CN wanted Sugar to end her.
One of the interesting things about Steven's mom is that despite becoming a better person over time, we're gmfed all of her character development in reverse. So she starts great and becomes more unlikable as we delve further into her backstory.

I wouldn't say Pink's character arc was entirely positive or negative. I feel like it all comes back to the incident with Volleyball. At first Pink was a little bratty, but also very open with her emotions. I'm also guessing she was insecure about being so much smaller than the other gems. Probably assumed she was weaker too. But then she gets really angry because the other Diamonds don't take her seriously and she accidentally hurts her pearl so badly that a scar remains even after the gem is healed. Now she knows she's strong but instead of being proud she's terrified of that power. After that Pink starts suppressing her emotions, but that makes dealing with Spinel a lot harder. I think she abandoned Spinel out of fear that what happened to Volleyball would reoccur.
A lot of that is based on assumptions but that's my impression of her general character progression before visiting earth. She became a better person on earth but she never lost that avoidant nature.
@@ap7635she’s not smaller than gems she’s smaller than the diamonds and she did think she was the weakest one also I think she left spinel because she finally got to rule over something which was earth and to mature spinel was the only thing keeping her from maturing and leaving to earth, also the warp broke so it probably had gotten broken after the pink decided to stay on earth and if they found out pink didn’t have a need for spinel I think they would just kill her
Real talk, I could relate to Spinel’s post-rage clarity near the end of the movie. I used to feel like that a lot as a teenager.

(At 33:30) I don't think that's the issue. The issue is, she's been screwed by Pink Diamond, she's emotionally unstable .And it doesn't really help that Steven was hesitant to put up with her, it almost looked like he's taking her for granted, Even if that's not intentional.
Now that i think of it imagine Spinel during the war, given how she beat the crystal gems even with little to no combat experience (i assume) she would’ve been a force to be reckoned with
Such a good movie! Spinel is my top 5 characters in SU, and her cold speech atop the injecter gives me chills, she was a truly hurt character who lashed out at the one person she recognized
Yeah, the series is very well aware that Pink Diamond wasn't a perfect person and that she left a lot of mess behind her. Thing is, Pink Diamond changed and became Rose Quartz, a good person overall when she passed. She just never thought of healing Pearl or Spinnel before disapearing. I really like Spinnel story because it shows that, even if you identify the problem and try to solve it, old habits come back quicker than you think. Not everything will be solve as soon as you sick therapy, it needs time, maybe even all your life to learn how to live with your trauma. And that something Future will explore in depht, because yeah, when you think about Steven story in the original stories, there are a lot of things that were never truly adressed or solved.
Pink really just saw herself as normal, in comparison to the other diamonds and in the lives of all the other gems around her. She was so Human in a weird way and she left people and didn't understand that in their eyes she was everything.
This was a good way of introducing the new things like Little Homeworld and his new relationship with the diamonds, and closing out this book of everything is Pink's fault because now its basically just new beginnings for Steven.
True but I do think pink saw herself lower than the gems and as we know pink did whatever she wanted so I’d sue wanted to be human she will most likely not let anything stop her which happened
Also this movie and Future are where the Tenchi Muyo inspiration for the show really shows itself. Steven looking like husky tenchi from this point on

Steven: Hey Spinel. Where did you get all these dangerous weapons anyway?
Spinel: The Garden's storeroom
Steven: Why would those things be in there?
Spinel: Homeworld isn't really big on plants so when Pink asked for gardening supplies the request went to the weapons division. They just remodeled a bunch of old weapons to make them shaped like gardening equipment.
Steven: So the Rejuvenator was just meant to be used as a regular scythe. Wouldn't it just phase through the plants without cutting them?
Spinel: Yes Steven. Yes it would.
Steven: What about the injector?
Spinel: We had an infestation of these weird rainbow caterpillar things. Pink asked for some kind of pesticide and they made her that injector. I know I'm one to talk but I think those guys got a little overenthusiastic because it was the first time Pink asked them for anything approaching an actual weapon. I guess to them "pest" and "organic life" were synonyms. Anyway Pink decided the bugs were cute and went to show them off to the other diamonds. We just left the injector in the storeroom.

One of the awesome things about the fusion scene is that the VAs of Steg and Opal are a husband and wife duo.

It's interesting that both Spinel's backstory and the Adventure Time song Everything Stays were inspired by the same story from Rebecca's childhood.
Spinel is very relatable to people who have been in toxic relationships. Drift Away always tears me up.
The wait for the movie was driving me insane. My brother and I used to watch SU together as the show was airing over the years. I was literally keeping an eye on the TV so we could be there the very second the movie started. Those were the days.
Spinel: After everything I did you couldn't possibly want me around now
Lapis: Don't be so hard on yourself. You were alone for a long time and were understandably upset
Spinel: Steven tried to help me but all I did was lash out at him
Lapis: You weren't that bad
Spinel: I beat up his friends
Lapis: You're a noncombatant gem who hadn't moved for thousands of years. If they lost to you then they needed the workout anyway
Spinel: I destroyed his dad's arm
Lapis: That was an accident. And Steven healed it so who cares?
Spinel: I almost wiped out all life on the planet.
Lapis: Well how was I supposed to know the ocean was that important!!!

So we finally get to the main event: Steven Universe vs Traumatized Gem Luffy (aka Spinel)

Wasn't expecting this reaction so soon! Super fun, great movie. and some of the best songs of the entire series in here!! Also since yall mentioned Steven's va sounding really good, Zach Callison actually makes music, he's got stuff on spotify. He did an album/ep and Connie's va made an appearance on it.
I'll be honest: when I 1st saw the movie I didn't get why we needed it, but now I can safely say that it does a great job of setting up Future thematically, which in itself is an incredibly important piece of Steven's story. As for Pink, I feel like Spinel's story is more of a tragic accident then anything else. Sure, abandoning Spinel and lying to her abt that was a terrible thing that Pink definitely did. But that's what the other diamonds did to other gems, including Pink. They were terrible people and Pink copied their behaviour because she wanted to be like them. But she really changed when she arrived on Earth. I feel like Pink who was Steven's mom, the 1 who we knew as Rose Quartz would never do this. Only she couldn't go back for Spinel after she started rebellion, because let's be honest: it would blow her cover in front of the other diamonds. And so Spinel became just another of Pink's past mistakes that would become a burden on her and on Steven. I do like how u guys evaluate the situation. It seems like u might be 1 of the few people in the fandom able to sympathise with both Pink and Spinel, like I am.

Such a shame they didn't show my favorite Spinel line, "Who am I? Who am I? What are you even saying? I'm the loser of the game you, didn't know you were playing!"
I love how much Spinel and the Diamonds work for each other as replacements for Pink in the end, pff
Spinel is pretty much exactly how the Diamonds viewed Pink: small, cute, funny and just sooo silly, just a little goofball
and the Diamonds are pretty much what Spinel saw in Pink: someone big and regal and beautiful whom she loves to make smile and to entertain
While it definitely absolutely was super messed up of Pink to just leave Spinel behind like that, I do also see her side of the story:
Spinel, at the time, was pretty much just a toy the other Diamonds gave her to try and appease her (similar to Blue giving her the Human Zoo when Pink said she wanted to preserve life on Earth), giving her a playmate to keep her busy while the other Diamonds were working on their own colonies so she would stop bugging them about getting her own (like we see in the dream/memory on the Jungle Moon), but while Pink did enjoy Spinel's antics, you can clearly see in her face that playing with her didn't really make Pink happy, she wanted to be like the other Diamonds, be a real part of what they are (going off of the parallel that Steven was feeling when he was standing in for Pink Diamond and feeling just like when he was struggling to be taken seriously as part of the Crystal Gems back in season 1). When the Diamonds finally gave in and gave Pink her first colony we don't know if the other Diamonds would've approved of her bringing Spinel along or not in the first place, but thinking back to the parallel to Steven, her leaving Spinel behind would've been more akin to Steven putting his toys away and trying to be more serious and such once he was finally allowed to come along on missions as a Crystal Gem.
Pink Diamond did a lot of growing up while she was down on Earth and she could've probably remembered Spinel and realized "Hey, letting her wait for me back in the garden all this time is pretty messed up, I should get her and let her live on Earth with us", but there were bunch of distracting factors or problems that would've prevented her from getting Spinel:
1. she started a war which took all of her attention, she probably didn't even have a thought to spare on Spinel during this time
2. once the war was over they destroyed all warp pads leaving earth so there was no quick and easy way to get to the garden, we don't know if they even had any functioning spaceships left after the war (besides the Legs I guess)
3. Pink Diamond was supposedly shattered, even if she did manage to get to the garden (without drawing attention) she would've had to reveal herself to Spinel which could've risked the secret getting out (remember that she even ordered Pearl not to speak of it so that the only one who could've possibly let the secret slip was Rose herself, she would not have risked Spinel blurting it out, getting seen going to the garden in the first place or anyone from Homeworld checking on Earth post-war or even her own leftover Crystal Gems (mainly Garnet and Amethyst I guess) questioning why and how Spinel got there, especially if Spinel claims to be either Pink Diamond's and/or Rose's best friend)
And even all that is only IF Rose didn't just completely forget about Spinel after the whole Earth, Crystal Gems, Intergalactic War, Fake-Shattering, everyone getting corrupted, starting a new life on Earth, etc stuff

Personally I feel like it all comes back to the incident with Volleyball. At first Pink was a little bratty, but also very open with her emotions. I'm also guessing she was insecure about being so much smaller than the other Diamonds. Probably assumed she was weaker too. But then she gets really angry because the other Diamonds don't take her seriously and she accidentally hurts her pearl so badly that a scar remains even after the gem is healed. Now she knows she's strong but instead of being proud she's terrified of that power. After that Pink starts suppressing her emotions, but that makes dealing with Spinel a lot harder. I think she abandoned Spinel out of fear that what happened to Volleyball would reoccur.
A lot of that is based on assumptions but that's my impression of her general character progression before visiting earth. She became a better person on earth but she never lost that avoidant nature.
fun fact, Opal is voiced by singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, and Steg is voiced by Ted Leo who has his own indie rock band, but they have a side band together called "The Both" so it's not the first time Opal's voice and Steg's voice have sung together.
Spinel is my absolute favorite antagonist in steven universe. Her story, heart breaking. Her pain, relatable for people who have been abandoned.
I remember the hype when seeing this movie trailer and just rewatching this movie so many times and deeply listening to the audio just a 10/10 Movie

Spinel is probably my favorite character in the whole franchise, particularly because of her Hilarious animation design, her depressing backstory and how Sarah Stiles nailed voicing her. Spinel's design reminds me alot of The "Fleisher characters eyes". Wouldn't be surprised if Rebecca Sugar was inspired by the Style. Spinel's story is relatable because of Abandonment/Neglect.
29:20 it’s very funny y’all say that! Rebecca Sugar said in an interview her inspiration for Spinel came from finding an old doll of hers in the backyard. It was half shielded from the sun by a box and so half of it was worn and sun damaged while the other half was pristine and like when she first played with it. It made her realize how important and formative toys and things like that are to our life, and how sometimes people treat people that way…expecting them to wait on pause on a shelf until you need them. Was such a cool interview, and really hit me in the feels over that character!

One thing I just noticed is Yellow laughs about how 6000 years is nothing but they're going crazy after not seeing Steven for weeks.
I am obsessed with how every single reactor I've seen so far has gone "WE HAVE TO KILL GREG" when Steven and Amethyst put together that Rose disappeared and that was Pearl's final piece. It's so funny ahahahah XD
I don't recall if this is the intent of the authors, but Spinel always struck me as a very well written portrayal of Borderline Personality Disorder. The deep, craving need to be loved by someone. The rapid jumping to assuming everyone else hates you. Hating yourself. The violent lashing out, trying to push people away as a form of self-punishment.
As someone who dealt with Borderline through much of my late teens and my twenties (I'm mostly recovered from it now at 28), Spinel was just... so perfect. She was the first character I saw in media who really felt like she represented the struggles I was going through. Spinel helped me see that I could be better, it would just take work.
This line in particular from one of the last songs really struck me and motivated me to try to be better:

Yeah, it's a simple and obvious thing, but... sometimes you just need to be reminded of that. You can do better. Just start working on it.
I love the fact that there was a theory about Onion being a final boss gem or somehow related to White diamond back then

There's a video somewhere that just a duel screen of every epsiode of Steven Universe on one screen, and Spinel in the garden on the other. Its absolutely heartbreaking to watch because you're watching the Crystal Gems grow and flourish together, but right next to them, Spinel remains stagnant.
I think this solidified something that reactors pick up from this movie:
when pink says "let's play a game", every single reactor I've watched has said some variation of "oh boy", like they pick up on what happened from one fuckjng line.
I just find that really funny.

And the ending where it looks like Vegas is actually inspired from the Takarazuka Revue, an all female theater troupe in Japan. They end their shows that way with the main characters wearing bombastic feathers while singing the final song/chorus.

I love Spinel ❤️, her character design, her villain song is absolutely amazing (Especially if you watch that scene a second time), she has a really depressing backstory poor girl 💔, her voice actor did a phenomenal job portraying all of her emotions (really showing that she went through something, what pink did really hurt her) also singing as well, her theme is like mostly creepy reverse sounds with little glitches which fit her character and story really well, and her animation was so cool and fluid (Absolutely amazing). I also love how her eyes showed how insane she became afterwards ❤️.

And cartoon network's initial offer was just the movie, then rebecca said "It makes no sense to have a movie if there's not a show to promote it", so she got both the movie and the future show.
