  • Episode 2 of the van build series.
    There are many different ways to install a sub floor in your van. If you're watching this video, be sure to check out others to get a good idea on what is best for YOUR van. This way was best for mine, as I did not want to penetrate any screws through the van floor that would introduce water damage.

    I'm getting started with my 2018 Transit Connect van build and really appreciate how thoughtful and thorough your video is and how much it has helped me feel confident in moving forward. I've been watching van build videos for over a year and this is THE BEST flooring one, by far. THANK YOU!!

      Wow that really means a lot! Glad it could be of some help!
      And nice work on the research! It takes time to gather alllllll the information, then it’s time to put it to work:)
      You got this!

    You might want to consider wearing a good quality respirator when spray painting, especially inside a smallish space like a van. Even with the doors open you're breathing a high concentration of paint into your lungs. This can be damaging to kidneys, liver, nervous system.

      Yeah man I definitely regretted it after doing it, that was not very smart of me😅
      Will definitely do it next time!!

    So fun! And I think the way you planned this out is excellent!

    2:00 I must say you are dedicated to protecting that floor with grinding and spray painting it. Next time you might want to be as dedicated to protecting your lungs from the rust dust and paint mist by wearing a respirator.

    hey, also doing a van build. I noticed you used stainless screws, is it neccesary? I was told to use washers, should I? Goodluck ! I'm in full struggle mode 🙏🏻🙃

    • @eliastcobb5506
      @eliastcobb5506  Před 8 měsíci +1

      It’s a struggle but you just gotta power through!
      Edit* I used these screws because it’s what i had for fasteners that i will be using to screw in my furring strips to the van walls. Normal wood screws is always ok for screwing into wood*
      I would say stainless is better because it’s the best option for rust-resistant fasteners.
      Is it necessary? No. Especially since technically by screwing anything into metal, you now have bare metal on the newly created threads in your van.
      Just something small you can do to help mitigate rust throughout the van’s life:)
      Hope that helped! Anymore questions feel free to ask, and good luck on your build!

    I did not get it: why timber battens under the subfloor? The density of the styrofoam together with a plywood subfloor is rigid enough to take all thinkable loads on this small area ... (besides the bridging effect of the battens, and the extra cost and the glue and the work and the sqeaking over time ...)

    • @eliastcobb5506
      @eliastcobb5506  Před 9 měsíci

      Man I honestly wouldn’t trust just having wood sit over insulation for flooring.
      You might be right with the density portion, but not having it secured and having a floating subfloor doesn’t seem sound to me with adding a bunch of framing I do later in the build on top of it.

      @@eliastcobb5506 If the subfloor is cut to fit on all sides where could it go?

    • @eliastcobb5506
      @eliastcobb5506  Před 9 měsíci

      @@Tom111060 I still feel like it will still shift or move around in those tiny gaps that will be there no matter what.
      Which means anything above it is shifting and moving too. And movement creates friction, which effects the fasteners and butt joints of all the framing that is built above the subfloor.
      Now I’m not an expert, this is my first van build. This is what made sense to me (and I’m pretty sure every other van build has secured their subfloor as well). If you would like to save yourself the labor and have a floating subfloor then give it a shot:)

      @Tom111060 Před 9 měsíci

      @@eliastcobb5506 ... I already did it floating. All build-ins (glued and screwed) are secured mainly to the van walls/ceiling and fixed to the half-inch subfloor. Nothing's moving or shifting so far (... but it's also one of the old sturdy vans ...)

    • @eliastcobb5506
      @eliastcobb5506  Před 9 měsíci

      @@Tom111060 well good:) I appreciate the question and some insight to a different type of build. Personally I would rather have everything secured down to something solid. But that’s just me.
      But if a floating floor works then that’s cool to have a different option that is less in labor/materials.
