Nordhavn 46 Haul Out Survey - JMYS

  • The survey is the most important aspect of every trawler transaction. It demands an inspection of the vessel both in and out of the water. A day (or two) is spent testing and demonstrating onboard equipment so the professional surveyors can assess and share their opinion on condition, suitability, and market value.
    In order to obtain your boat loan and/or insurance coverage, you will need a “pre-purchase survey”. JMYS always recommend that our buyers have a diesel inspector in addition to a credentialed surveyor.
    Coordinating the underway demonstration (sea trial), haul out and dockside inspections is a balancing act of people, places, dates and timing. Buyers have a lot to learn in a short period of time and seller’s want to show their boat is ship shape.
    When the day arrives, it’s best to have a sense of what to expect as it can feel overwhelming.
    If you haven’t sold or purchased a boat, there is a good chance you aren’t aware of all that goes on during the hustle and bustle of a survey day. The boat quickly becomes crowded with different professionals moving about to complete their various tasks, and the current and future owners, along with their respective brokers, are onboard as well to oversee the survey and ask questions along the way.
    Jeff is a seasoned survey participant, often involved in two or more each month - traveling all over the country. He has attended hundreds of surveys and he loves knowing that he will learn something new each time, it’s part of what drives him to make sure his clients, be they buyers and/or sellers, get the most out of this intense experience.
    This video focuses on the sea trial, haul out and survey of Partida, a 1991 Nordhavn 46. She was evaluated in Baja Naval, Ensenada, Mexico. Partida had a comprehensive examination during the haul out and underway demonstration.
    The team hired by the buyers to do the inspections are shown doing their thing. The day wraps up with the all-important “findings” in with diesel mechanic, Phillip Jones and hull surveyor Kells Christian.
    Thank you to everyone involved for allowing us to share this action-filled day with others.

    Very timely video for me. We are finishing up the survey and doing sea trial on a 52 ft Hatteras tomorrow. It's a private sale from owners we know well on a boat berthed next to us for the past two years, and but there was never a doubt that we would do a complete survey. It is always money well spent. Not just for peace of mind regarding the boat's condition but also for what you learn from the experts, no matter how much experience you have yourself.

    I like the percussion hull inspection, very high tech.

    • @JeffMerrillYachts
      @JeffMerrillYachts  Před 6 měsíci

      Nuts: Yes, as simple as using a screwdriver to turn a screw...the percussion test is the easiest way to "sound" for hollows or delamination's - it also let's the surveyor 'canvas' the vessel to check for uniformity in construction. Steel boat surveyors use ultrasound (audio gauge) to test for thickness and wastage. Funny how the normal human senses of sight, sound, touch and smell are important natural resources for inspection.

      Vagabond: Similar comment to PS below. The video only shows a small part of the story. Kells is a very serious, hard working surveyor who has years of experience and incredible insight. He has his priorities right - primarily safety, then reliability and is operating systems, etc. It is a lot to do in a day and quite possible to miss something, but he does focus on the big issues and the small issues and provided a detailed report to the buyers with his findings including many digital photos

    • @JeffMerrillYachts
      @JeffMerrillYachts  Před 2 lety +2

      Mike: Thank you. Hard to edit a 12 hour day into a short video. The buyer pays for any and all of -surveyor, diesel mechanic, oil samples and haul out yard (plus power wash). The seller is responsible for making the boat available and either operating the vessel or hiring a captain to do so.

    My buddy bought a 43' Searay. When the boat was pulled it was very obvious there were blisters below the waterline on the hull. The owner immediately thought it was fiberglass damage...my buddy's surveyor told him it was only surface bubbles in the bottom paint...since the owner assumed it was fiberglass damage that would require significant costs to repair, my buddy knocked down a huge amount of money off the asking price.

The rotation spreads the propeller blades open in either direction, but the pitch of the blades is designed for forward, and they do go in reverse, just not as effective. However, if I pay a guy to do a survey and he tells me he got all the chip marks on the paint but he only looked through a tiny hole to see the batteries and didn’t check the water maker (vital parts of the boat imo) you better believe I’m sending him back to go and check. Having said that, I trust Jeff Merrill 100% and if he says the guy is above board, well then that’s good enough for me. And to be honest, my opinion don’t matter, it’s the buyer’s opinion that matters in the end.

      Wim: Thank you for watching and commenting. Out clients are owner/operators, they look after the boat, it is part of the joy, not just ending up in fun places. Keeps you sharp in retirement and is actually very therapeutic for most who do it, certainly not for everyone. An alternative -,you could charter a boat or own a boat that has your crew do all of the work, then it might be more fun, but also cost more money!
