      Then-producer John Nathan-Turner was quite frank about his opinion that the female companion character (whether it be Tegan or Nyssa or Peri) was in the show primarily to be eye candy, "something for the dads to watch." And it certainly shows in Peri. Actress Nicola Bryant was literally right out of drama school and had never acted professionally before. It's pretty clear that the one and only reason she got the part was how good she looked in the bikini she wore in her first story (and the skimpy outfits she wore for the rest of her run.) She also couldn't pull off an American accent.
      To be fair, though, the writing staff seemed to have a distinctly hostile attitude towards Americans in general, which seemed to be reflected in how they wrote Peri. She was perpetually whining, moping, complaining and was generally incompetent and useless.
      She looks better in retrospect because at least she wasn't as annoying as Mel, her successor.

      I agree with the variety, but I also think that the purpose of why it’s always a modern companion is important. It’s meant to have the audience relate to the companion, witnessing and following along with the stories as if they’re traveling along with the doctor.

      I think the only mistake with Clara was not letting her die the first time. She was supposed to give her life to save the Doctor, that was the end of her story. Everything after that felt like that movie series that they keep making equals to even though the story was over in the third one.

    This seems to be a weird mix of hated by fans and hated by people in production! Peri for a start wasn't hated anywhere near as much as you implied in this video and Adam was too brief and forgettable to form any kind of opinion of him at all, there are hundreds of characters from single stories that had more screen time than him.

    • @LibraGamesUnlimited
      @LibraGamesUnlimited Před 3 lety +3

      I'm not sure Adam could be counted as a Companion as he only took that one trip and, as I recall, was barely involved in the main plot. Bascially, the only thing he does that effect the plot is that his mind link allows the bad guy to learn about the Doctor and the TARDIS. Also, given that his plan was never going to work (the message he tried to record was clearly never going to be useable) the Doctor's reaction was over the top.
      Rose basically conned him into taking her back to the day her father died then saved his life, threatening all of time and space and while he did get mad he didn't drop her off back home. I guess the moral is: if you're going to use the Doctor to change history make sure he wants to get into your pants if you don't want him to dump you off at home. :)

Martha literally saved the world solo and somehow survived everything and then joins Unit and Torchwood and goes on to fight aliens on the regular with Mickey, who became a cyberman destorying, freedom fighting superhero in a parallel world practically on a whim. Rose becomes omnipotent to a point that she influenced nearly every prior episode. Rory has the willpower of a Marvel superhero. I think the biggest issue with that episode is that it was trying too much new stuff at once. It was the first episode to have little or no Doctor and Rose, the main monster was designed by a child through a contest, and so on. That joke at the end was also really craapy and uncalled for.
      What's bad is, they could have had a great episode if it had just been about Micky and Jackie dealing with the time between visits from Rose. Maybe Micky getting involved in a light, local, mystery, or something that turned out to be aliens and had the Doctor and Rose show up, in the end to land a hand.

      There’s been a reevaluation of Love & Monsters recently that paints it as a deconstruction of the fandom. The members of LINDA are drawn together by the Doctor and express themselves through theories, writing and art, but eventually the Doctor becomes less important than the friendships themselves. Victor Kennedy comes along and lambasts them for losing sight, sucking the joy out of the group with his obsessiveness, before making them a part of himself. The analysis goes that the Abzorbaloff represents toxic fans who indoctrinate others into being toxic. While I don’t believe this is intentional in any way, I recently rewatched the episode with this in mind, and it’s not half bad!

      Any one of those, on their own, could have been fine but all three in a single episode? Nah.

Idk if Jackie is strong enough to carry an episode on her own. But you’re right, there’s just too many ideas thrown in with very little consideration for the end result. It showed that not every major character has the chance to die in some form of glorious manner & that sometimes, life itself can get you faster than any invading alien race could. And that not every major death has to be the result of the Doctor indirectly putting them in such a position.
    As for how no Series 11-13 characters are in this list, kinda think it’s mostly due to the characters during this period simply being not good but not bad either, but are mostly just, meh. • @HeavyMetalMouse
      @HeavyMetalMouse Před 3 lety

      While I personally enjoyed Clara, I can see why there are those who would find her less likeable. The primary reason that stands out to me is that there was a very 'forced' feeling/element to her, as though the show was demanding that she was important, even vital, in a way that didn't necessarily feel earned or deserved within the narrative. A character that doesn't click well with a viewer will only be made worse by the show insisting "This character is important. You care about them. You *have* to care about them because they are important."
      Personally, I found the interplay with a companion that tried to 'out-Doctor the Doctor', who went 'all in' on the adventures in a way that made even the Doctor tell her to slow down, was a rather interesting spin on the usual dynamic, particularly when it showed why doing that is a Bad Idea for anyone but the Doctor (and only usually isn't for him because he has the means to generally deal with the consequences). The stories where Clara pushed the envelope and it all worked out served to make her overconfident in her ability to handle things like the Doctor does, while seeding the narrative with those moments where things don't quite work the way they 'should' when the Doctor does them; the cop-out on her final fate rather pulled the rug out from under that theme at the very end - and that itself often serves as a capstone for the viewer that doesn't care for her, as it highlights how narratively 'too much' she can be.

      @@PsychoTrenchcoatKid no the stories for the 13th doctor are just annoying, the doctor has lost their quirkiness and since 12 it went down hill. 12th doctor was too serious all the time, 13 just puts me to sleep. It's not fun, it's all about sending some political or social message in every episode as for 13 'fam' oh fgs it's too much and none of the characters have really had a chance to shine. I really hope 14/15 is better and gives us back what the show had with 9,10 and 11.

    Have you watched much of this stuff? I got as far as mispronouncing "Vislor" (they rhymed it with "visor") and telling us the actor's name was Strickland instead of Strickson.

    I find your take on Clara amusing because it differs to mine. You say one of the reasons she's hated is she hung around too long, but I hated her opposite 11. Then I loved her opposite 12! For me Clara & 12 were a golden comedic duo, "Career, that's right. She cares so I don't have to!" Iconic if you ask me :)

    The only characters I’ve ever actually hated were the most recent Doctor & her woke little gang. I think they need to forget the last two series & start again. Though to be honest I don’t think it’s salvageable now. RIP Dr Who 😢

      They need to go on hiatus and retcon out the female "Doctor."

    Peri and 6 get much better in the Big Finish audios, everyone should listen to his audio era as it redeems him fantastically
    also perhaps top 10 underrated Classic who episodes?

    Peri's clear times to shine were her bikini scene in Planet of Fire and as she leaned over the 5th doctor as he regenerated.

    I agree with a lot of these. I think Turlough's problem was the same as for Mel and Clara. They were brought in under less than optimal conditions for a limited story arc, and once that arc ended, no one seemed to have a clue what to do with them. Turlough at least got an ending, even if it was part of a checklist because they wanted to have a clean slate for the incoming Doctor. Mel didn't get a beginning, nor an end, but they HAD to write her out because Bonnie Langford wasn't sticking around for a second series anyway. Her problem was that they weren't able to show her FIRST story with the Sixth Doctor, and the regeneration the following season basically made any attempt at a start for her impossible.
    And Clara. Clara. When you are obsessed with her body over her acting, there's something wrong here (that also applied to Peri to a degree). Also, same as with Turlough, once the "Impossible Girl" storyline ended, no one knew how to address her presence in the TARDIS. Personally, I didn't understand how she was suddenly working at Coal Hill School - I saw it as yet another ill-thought-out nostalgia trip brought in by Russell Davies - which also colored my acceptance of Danny Pink. He was brought in very haphazardly, and I never thought Clara and Danny ever really had any chemistry together. Was Danny brought in solely to downplay yet another romantic relationship with the Doctor? That's how I saw it then, and when it didn't work, he sure was killed off so very quickly. We never got a chance to know him, and he just didn't fit in.
    Nicola Bryant and Colin Baker just got the short end of the stick, in my opinion. Peri and the Doctor were never able to develop any kind of relationship because the writers were pushing the antagonism between the characters. It WAS a 180% shift from the more kind-hearted Five, but Six started so utterly unlikeable, and his relationship with Peri was just insult and contrast, which simply didn't work. It should be noted that the most prominent look you get of Peri before joining the Fifth Doctor was of her chest, which set the tone for her as much as The Twin Dilemma did for the Sixth Doctor. Both characters were presented in the worst possible way, and the writers never really tried to improve matters over their first full season. And when Peri was written out, it was how Nicola Bryant wanted - kill Peri so that we could finally see that Peri and the Doctor HAD gotten close, that their time together HAD changed them, and we could get an emotional moment from the Doctor. That worked about as well as anything else from the Sixth Doctor's era.
    And then JNT and the writers took the coward's way out and said, oh, she's not dead, she married Brian Blessed's Yrcanos, which made no fleeking sense at ALL. No more than Leela leaving the TARDIS during the Fourth Doctor's era to marry a Gallifreyan she barely had time to talk to!
    As for Colin Baker, Colin said that he wanted to start his era with the Doctor very off-putting, very alien, almost villainous, and over the course of his era, he would learn how to become a hero again. His relationship with Peri was part of that gradual redemption arc. And if that sounds familiar, that is exactly what Peter Capaldi was able to bring to HIS Doctor, but not Colin. Colin even said that he wanted his Doctor to have a black outfit to fit his black persona, but JNT refused, and once again Capaldi got what Colin did not. Over the years, I have developed more respect for what Colin and Nicola were trying to do, but the writing simply wasn't there. Both actors were simply cheated throughout their time on the show. BTW, I never liked Capaldi's Doctor, and I felt he never got the leavening that Big Finish would ultimately give Colin.
    Regarding Adric and Adam Mitchell, I hated them really for the same reason: they were just so unlikeable from the gitgo, and I wonder whether anyone was really intended to like either of them. Adric did get one of the most emotional departures of the classic series, but for this unlikeable character, who cares?
    But up high on MY list of unlikeable characters is Donna Freaking Noble. Honestly, I hated her from the start, she never really improved, she was a screaming ninny throughout, she didn't really have a workable relationship with the Doctor, she got a terrible ending, and then they brought her BACK for Tennant's second run as the Doctor. I never saw the Fourteenth Doctor season, except for tidbits on CZcams, and I still don't know why it had to be HER!
