I had always wondered how that worked. I have a 2018 so I don't have this problem, but great to know for the next truck. Thanks for sharing!
A simple fix goes a long way! Thank you for this. Can’t wait to install this on my 2022 GMC. Remi
Curt has had this out for a while now, unfortunately using it means u can’t use ur tailgate the way it was intended
How about looking down before you lower the tailgate inner step section?
What? Pay attention to what you are doing? How dare you have such high expectations for another human being. I prefer we all be victims of GMs poor design.
Reminds me of a bit by Mitch Hedberg. He said escalators are cool because they can never break, only become stairs, sorry for the convenience.
Chevy owners are not that smart.
No kids huh Paul?
Great, now fix the DFM lifters in the 5.3 and 6.2 so they last longer than a few months. I have to open the hood more often than I have to open the tailgate on our '21 Silverado.
Tim, I look at it as just another gizmo that will go wrong over time from salt, electronics'.... I still prefer Fords tail gate and really like the Rams 60/40 spilt door.
I actually like GM's solution with the corner steps. They're simple, they don't have any electronics or mechanisms to fail, they're cheap, and they work. It's funny how they came up with the simplest solution and the most convoluted solution for the exact same truck.
@@AkioWasRight yessir. GMs corner step solution is the best in the biz. I have friends who have broken their Ford man steps. Personally, I wouldn't get the fancy GM tailgate. I'd stick with the plain model with the bumper steps, but I like that GM give people the option.
The Ram 6040 door is a great option
Too bad the rest of the truck falls apart after a couple years because they make a really nice truck
Exactly this, the tailgate is a solution for a problem I don't have, creating a problem, which needed a solution. Now, we know that hitch receiver cover is doomed for failure and now your tailgate won't operate properly. Glad I've got an old fashion tailgate that just opens and closes.
@@jeffw6894 With one of those reliable old fangled physical handles and a latch??
Can't you just use your eyes and look to see if there's a hitch there or not. The world has changed so much in the last 10 years.
Same goes for people buying fancy wiring harnesses because they can't remember to push a button already installed to bypass the auto stop or turn on the fog lamps.
I guess you’ve never been a victim to shit happens. I always appreciate technology that saves me from shit happens.
Yes. If you don't use your common sense. S*** will always happen.
Imagine using your truck as a truck atv& trailers etc someone else goes to drop the tailgate & doesn't know how to operate it & drops it on the hitch.
@@buckssenditinfochannel5263 that has happened to us! Was getting tires installed and the guy at the shop was showing someone else the tailgate. Dumb fuck opens tailgate into hitch then stands on the tailgate. Sometimes it’s not the owners fault for shit happening.
Until that sensor fails or that little plastic flap gets broken off.
I know because people cant use their brain either to not lower it with the hitch there!!! DRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR LOL!
Well done on the demonstration!
The commercial clips were a nice touch.
New video editor having fun. Thanks for noticing.
Hi Tim,
Thanks for the update.
Or... Rather than spending $150 you can just hold the upper gate button for 3 seconds till the lights flash and it disables it. Then you can re-enable it by doing the same process over again... Concern over ...
Good info Tim! Thanks for sharing with everyone 😀👍🏼
A company called TailgateFix has the best and The original solution to this. GM Authority even did an article on their product. They have Auto & Manual versions and even have a Plug-n-Play harness that can enable it to operate multiple ways (ie. lock out inner gate or lock out main gate to allow inner gate to still work when hitch in receiver, whichever way works best for your use of truck). I ordered one from Amazon last fall and put it on my 2021 GMC. Works as advertised.
Can you provide a link? I have a 2022 that I just picked up and found this problem out the hard way...
Can you share that info plz..

Looks like a cheap ad on fix to me
Can’t wait till that cover breaks off or the wiring goes bad
You would think with all those smart automotive engineers they would’ve discovered that problem from day one
Just so people know you can just push and hold the top tailgate button until you see the taillights flash and the "small" tailgate will be locked out from opening. Simply do it again to return it to normal.
Yes, but that’s not always the problem. There are lots of failed switches.
I can believe that I personally would FORGET to lock it out and have a mess! I'd rather have something that would automatically lock me out.I've got a new '22 last week and already opened it but caught it because I remembered the hitch! This'll work for me
I read a review that when it went through an automatic carwash the brushes caught the cover and broke it off. I just installed the curt multi-flex tailgate sensor and read a review on Amazon about the possibility of the carwash damaging the cover. Now i'm concerned about running it thought an automatic carwash.
You can also disable the multiplex tailgate by holding the button in for three seconds until the tail lights blink
Still waiting for them to fix lifters and transmissions but no, the tailgate is most important
Its called user error. Operator must know clearances and space needed before operating something. We need to stop aiding stupidity.
Ummm....we're talking Chevy boys here. Not that smart.
Or if one of the kids or someone who isn't familiar with your truck makes that mistake. Great fix!
@@shanerides that's why you don't operate something if you don't know how to use it. That should be a lesson you teach your kids.
That's ridiculous. I have a 21 Sierra Denali 3500. Nobody said a word to me about not dropping the inner tailgate down when there was a ball in it. I learned that lesson quickly. It's stupid engineering on GM's part.
This is the big reason i chose gm over the others. They aren't afraid of innovation, and when it's not perfect, they work to improve it. Though this should've been considered initially im glad it was remedied. Now they should honestly retrofit this feature.
Hello and please please help with this!! I have a limited 2022 AT4....I have to go back and get the heated cooled seats as most due to the chip shortage. I had to wait to get this and act fast or it would of sold same day, it's the preferred package I couldn't even test drive it. So when I finally do I find it doesn't have all the camera angles that's a upgraded package of $3k more. But...I don't even have front camera, front collision sensor, lane departure warnings, not even lane shift warning lights on the side mirrors!!!! All of that is on the higher package. This is safety!! And the second highest trim only under Denali this isn't standard?!!!! Very very upset with a $65k truck and safety features aren't standard. Help Tim
i just picked up my 2022 2500 chevy duramax high country with the flex tailgate and it does not have that feature 🤔
Awesome! Hopefully, the sensor is weather/corrosion/rust proof. As always, thanks for your great video's!! 👍😊
Good work
If you are going to spend that much for a truck, for S300.oo get a B&W hitch. Who wants to pull the hitch out every time you want to use that function of the tailgate, and where do you store it, under the seat, in the bed of the truck or leave it in the garage and forget it and then need it and not have it. On my 2022 High Country 3500, I can program it so the inner tailgate will not drop unless you do a long hold on the button, nothing that you have to buy. After 4 years I would have thought GM would realize that there is a problem and make some minor adjustments on their design, but I guess they are afraid of having to retro the fix.
That Lil flapr chip, cost you heated seats on the mid trims, ?
That’s just an aftermarket part. You can buy it from the dealer or it’s just a curt part. Doesn’t come from the factory just fyi and can work on any model that has multi pro
U still have to take it out of the receiver to drop the gate.
WHOOP****DEEEEEE*******DOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! LOL

Hey Tim, I have the 2022 Silverado w the multiflex tailgate and I was wondering if there is a way to lock the tailgate. I know how to lock the inner gate but I want to lock the whole tailgate so it doesn't fold down.
Not sure if that is possible. There might be an option that the local dealer can bring up with a scan tool.
Amazing how we use technology to protect ourselves from ourselves! HOW did we survive in the past??
Good to know GM is protecting itself from our balls. ;-P
I know it's Wednesday but damn all this negativity over a sensor on a flap. Yeesh!
The real story is that beer breath guy who tries to drop the lower gate with the sensor locking it. He's gonna swear and slam so hard until he breaks it and then threaten to sue while bad mouthing GM for the next five years. Danm you beer breath guy.
Or how about the guy that has the sensor fail constantly like they always do that will constantly badmouth GM because they can't use a feature they paid for.
Is this only on the 22 1500s or HD too? Can u turn it off & on? I'm hoping to use the step feature to get in the slidin camper with the hitch in with the b&w multi pro ball that avoids hitting the tailgate
Not sure, sorry.
How long before that gets torn off ?
Wow now if they can fix there failed transmission problems on the 10 speed tranny that they are screwing people over with. But nice tailgate.
Does that come with the truck? Where do we get that sensor? I have a 2023 Zr2 and it does not have that sensor and cap.
Check with your dealer. It isn’t consistent which trucks come with it and others don’t.
I miss the chains that held the tail hit up on our 1949 Chevy🤷🏼♂️
I have a 2021 SLT premium with the multi tailgate. Do you know if GM can retro fit the 2021 with that feature?
That item is actually a Curt Hitch item. You can buy them just about anywhere.
Hey time .. love your channel.. thanks for all the info.. So I have a refreshed at4.. which is awesome.. however per the manual I am supposed to be able to disable the inner tailgate by holding done the butteon for 3 seconds.. Huh. It should disengage. I have done that same button trick.
@@Pickuptrucktalk ya I’ll try again maybe truck running? As soon as I push and hold button lights flash right away and opens instead of flashing after 3 seconds.
Worried about your breathing. Get an EKG
OMG....just another reason to avoid the multi-flex tailgate.
Hey Tim has GM resolved the long crank issue on the 3.0 Duramax Diesel. I haven't heard anything and my son is looking to buy one.
I haven’t heard anything sorry.
Yes there is a firmware that fixes it. Simple fix
I just bought a 2022 GMC Elevation and I don’t have that wire ??
You don't need it. If you're truly that concerned about dropping the inner gate on your hitch, just bring the key to the back of the truck and hold the inner gate button for three seconds to disable/re-enable it.
You can lock it so the drop down part won't unlatch. Hold the upper button for the 3 seconds the tail light will flash to confirm its locked. Theres a sticker on the left side of the bed to tell you how to lock it. To unlock just hold the button again for 3 seconds. Dont need to buy anything.
That's only on 2022 models, doesn't work on 2019 - 2021 models. Also, people will not remember how this trick works. A company called TailgateFix has the best and The original solution to this. Did the truck come with that sensor or did you have to buy it? If purchased, how much was it?
Came with it. I hear it is available on the aftermarket though.
Can you still drop the upper section while the main gate is closed or does it just completely disable the upper section?
Completely disable.

Until that flimsy cover gets broken then you can’t lower it at all. Is it correct that it works off the cover versus a hitch being installed?
I believe it works off the cover. If you break it, you could just follow the wiring and disengage it. Seems like a simple solution.
@@Pickuptrucktalk yeah and you could just as easily not leave the hitch in the receiver too. At least that’s what I do but to each their own. I could just see this getting broken for the people that always leave their hitch in. You’d think they would have made a simple switch that engaged when the hitch was slid in.
Maybe it’s just the angle but aren’t those wires in the way of the safety chain hook area?
Just the angle.
Is the tailgate really up to your armpits or are you just short?
Till that breaks off after backing into it.
It's not GM's fault idiots drop the inner section down when a hitch is there, how's that a fair criticism? That's like saying the bumper needs to be fixed because it dents when I T-bone a semi truck. GM can fix this but they can't give us a new interior?!?!
There’s a new interior coming in 22.
I had a buddy with a new GMC Sierra, and while showing us onlookers the features, he almost took a finger off a workmate, lol. Honestly, I liked it at first, but the more I see it, the less I want it.
Please tell me this is an option and not standard. I dont want that on my refreshed Denali I ordered
Standard from what I can see.
@@Pickuptrucktalk I haven't seen this on any of the 2022 gmc or chevy trucks. If it comes on my truck I'll guess I'll be deleting it. It definitely looks like an after thought.
@@Sir_Mack GM told me they added it for the ‘21 model year.
Man that wire routing is terrible, I can see a safety chain rubbing through that in a hurry. Surprising, GM is usually better than this. Is it pre production?
I hope so, was just thinking the same thing about how exposed and vulnerable that wire is.
its not a GM factory product. These are aftermarket things that have been out for a year or so now.

Good 'ole GM...complex solution to half ass engineering...
WhAt if you open the top part first?
If you open the inner gate first, the main gate is disabled. These things are dummy-proof when you actually use them.
@@jakelee5456 was wondering that because I have a 21 and my wife has opened it on my hitch.
Simple fix, hard to believe the folks at gm didn’t think of this the first time around
they did not know the problem existed the first time around. It never came up in their engineering think tank round table discussions because engineers do not use trucks like most common non engineer people do. Engineer's are book smart, not street smart.
Or the engineers were smart enough to know not to drop the step with a hitch in the receiver. We as humans need to think and take some accountability to our stupidity sometimes.
@@danquenell well said.
Now maybe they can have the "step gate" where it folds out lower,or adjustable,as us 5-71/2" fellows with shorter legs can't climb up in it easily!

How about building a small number of inexpensive vehicles that will regularly exceed 300k and give them a 200k warranty. You won’t meet the mileage standard, but since they’re based on an average you should be able to do it. It’d be nice to show the public that it could be done if the gubmint stayed out of it…
