Thank you for this video… My back hurts from pulling weeds for hours today. Got the product, will be applying tomorrow. Wish me 🤞 good luck.
Your welcome! Good luck! We actually applied more to some beds this past weekend.
I apply Preen on top of my newly laid wood mulch. It works very well. After about three months fluff the mulch and apply it again. Be sure to water it in.
That is a fabulous idea! Thanks for sharing! And yes.... watering it in is key.
Do you place it under the mulch as well? We have a bed on the side of our house and I just want to stop the weeds (we have no plants or shrubs on that side).
My plan, hand weeded the entire bed, laid down a good coat of vinegar, salt, and Dawn soap, wait for weeds to die, rake up dead weeds, preen, mulch and preen again? How does that sound?
Why the soap? If you are you are going to put salt in soil NOTHING will grow in it, you might even kill surrounding plants @@surfnyolly
great video! helped me out so much
Glad to hear it! I have been impressed with our results here in the beds I applied it in. Used in the right ways I think it's a great product.
Thank you for this video! I just added a flower bed beside my garage and hopefully this'll do the job. I hope it doesn't harm my roses though.
Glad to see that it’s helpful! Good luck!
Thank you for posting this! Very helpful.
My pleasure. It has been working really well in the beds where we applied it.
I love preen.....I use it in my flower beds in the fall and my flower are almost weed free the next season
That's a good idea.... I've never tried it in the fall. Do you use an extended release version or just the regular kind?
I was hoping to hear about issues with handling Preen and effects on pets ... thanx for the video
I have been meaning to check the label for you but haven't gotten around to it yet. We have cats who use the area we applied this too and have had no problems that I am aware of. Our dogs our in our yard off and on also.
@@microhomesteadecology Thanx
Hi. New to gardening so this may be an obvious answer but do you put it on the top soil? Over garden soil? Under mulch? Thanks for all your helpful videos. I've learned quite a bit from you and your community.
Welcome! So happy to hear your taking the gardening plunge! Every year is a chance to try and learn new things. Yes, put it on top of soil where you don't want seeds to sprout. Putting it below mulch would help keep weeds in check, but good thick mulch will do that on its own generally speaking. If you have stuff growing in your mulch, like blown in seeds for example, then top dressing your mulch with preen might not be a bad idea to try.
Ok, here I go! Trying Preen on a small section of my gravel driveway!! A constant battle between me and those weeds!!! Fingers crossed!! Thanks for the help!
Make sure you water it in. If it isn't wetted down it doesn't work like it should.
Did the preen work on the rocks??
@@microhomesteadecology How much wet is needed? Applied yesterday, was supposed to rain yesterday evening and last night...didn't materialize. Today I went out and used the hose with a sprayer, did the gravel/rock and the dirt areas where we placed the Preen. Just not sure how long/how much water is needed. Thanks.
@@Rancher665 I think as long as you get it wet enough that it makes soil contact and kinda starts dissolving you should be good. Then it can't blow away maybe?? I'm not an expert by any stretch, but that'd be my thoughts. Most of the weed seeds that germinate are surface level seeds, especially in a gravel area...so it's not like it needs to soak a foot deep into the soil. Did you use the 6 month stuff? I picked some up last week to try in our driveway... Just waiting for some rain!! 🤣😂 Maybe I should do a rain dance or something. 😆
I live here near Vale too. I'm trying Preen this year and am trying to decide when it is best to apply it as we, as you know, can get weeds in February!! Lol. When do you think is a good time to apply it in our area? By end of Feb or even sooner? Or March? I'm not really sure when to try it for our high desert weed machine....thanks!!!
Well, I just looked back through the raw footage to make sure I was thinking correctly and I was..... that video was shot around the first of April. My instinct when reading your question was to say late March, early April. I usually start thinking about getting "in" the garden in general around spring break. One thing to keep in mind is the watering it in part is essential for success. If you don't have access to water, I would apply it before, or even during a spring rain to let it soak in well. If you were going to go earlier, I would maybe consider the extended control stuff with a six month window. Part of my thoughts on April application is April, May, and June should be covered well, and if I forget a second application, the heat of summer might be slightly less tempting for at least some of those pesky weeds.
Great info, when is the first application applied?
I like to get it out in early spring here. If I can get it down before a good rain all the better.
Great vid! #Subscribed. Trying to find your vid on getting rid of vines? Mom has some that come from unknown source & take over her flower beds :(
That's not fun! Do you know what kind of vines they are? I've honestly gone to landscape fabric when the weed pressure is really bad.....but in a flower bed that might not work so well.
I have successfully gotten rid of my English ivy that the previous owner planted. It took year after year with a pick axe chopping and destroying root system. By adding more plants to crowd it out and chopping anything off that came to the surface. Mine was making its way under my house siding. It had to go.
Always afraid to put any weed preventer next to shrubs, flowers, trees. Are you sure they not going to damage established plants? Thank you for the video by the way. Short, informative, good quality!
The beds you see in this video are absolutely thriving. The shrubs and plants have grown so well we actually just did a massive pruning a week or so ago to keep them to a size and shape that we like. We have experienced no ill effects to existing plants. That being said, I would check the label carefully to be sure there isn't some specific plants that might be effected, but for us here, zero problems and we are thrilled with the results.
@@microhomesteadecology ok. Thank you! You encouraged me. I will try.😁👍🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
great video. if we are adding wood mulch do we add preen first and then put wood chips on top of it? or just put down the wood chips and sprinkle preen on top?
I'd put it down first then mulch over the top. The active weed seeds should be in the soil, not the mulch of wood chips in theory so you want it to get into the soil where it can do its work.
@@microhomesteadecology yep I was thinking the same thing!
Thank you for the info! I inadvertently spread preen in a bed where I plan to put down flower seeds 😬. Is there anything I can do to enable to lay me seeds?
Start them in pots and transplant the seedlings should be a safe bet. Beyond that you could try pre sprouting the seeds like in paper towels in a Ziploc bag or something maybe? I'm not sure how well that would work though. Depending on the flowers I'd start them in seedling trays and transplant them out.
I've been thinking about this since responding.... Another option might be a layer of soil. In theory, if you spread a few inches of compost or topsoil on top, the preen wouldn't be in that soil, and your seeds might then be able to sprout? Maybe???
I agree. The directions say to apply new soil for any new planting. Should enable seeds to sprout.
Can i put it in an area where I am trying to get vinca minor ground over to grow?
You know, I don't know directly without going out and checking the labels on the packaging. I know from other comments here that some plants can have issues with the chemicals in preen, so I would check first......but, your intent is spot on in my opinion! Using this to keep other weeds from coming up within the ground cover is an excellent idea, as long as it won't hurt it for some reason. If you used the Preen n Green, you'd also be adding some fertilizer to your ground cover as well.
im wondering if you could forgo the watering if you're in a damp enough climate in a rock bed?
My instinct is no. I think it really needs the water to wash it into the surface layer of the soil.
Hello 👋 there,
Can I used preen garden weed preventer for lawn or is just for using garden ? What happens if we using it for lawn ?please let me know 🙏
Depending upon your desired outcome, it is possible that preen could be beneficial for lawn applications. If used on a lawn, preen would in theory prevent blown in weed seeds from being able to germinate. It would have no effect on the grasses generally used for lawns since grass most often reproduces via root expansions. That being said, you would not be able to apply more grass seed or over seed your lawn in bare spots, etc. if preen had been applied as it should prevent the seeds from being able to germinate. Just remember what preen is designed to do. It keeps seeds from being able to germinate. So a lawn application should keep any seeds that fall into the lawn from being able to germinate.
Im planning on putting out rocks over fabric weed barrier. Is this something I can our on the soil before laying out the fabric and rocks to further prevent weeds from growing? And after I lay out the fabric and rocks is this something that I can reapply?
I'd not waste my money putting under weed barrier. If you use the good stuff that is seriously good at preventing weeds....plus the rock layer will block even more sunlight. Don't waste time putting it under. After the fact.... depending on rock size and the amount of blown in dust and weed seeds.... Maybe. It is designed to prevent weed from germinating so in theory it might keep weeds from germinating..... That being said, weeds like that are generally easy to pull as they don't have a chance to establish a deep tap root. Or even die once temps warm up. Lots of variables....but definitely don't put it under the weed fabric in my opinion.
Nice video, but I heard no mention of Preen's safety around our pets or wildlife?
Aquatic life is the main thing I remember. I'd double check the label if you want to be sure.
I'm redoing my flower bed, and I'm doing weed barrier fabric and gravel stones (rock). I assume I need to place this down prior to putting the barrier and stone down? Or can this be applied on top of the stones after? Thank you!
With weed barrier fabric you should not need preen. They represent two different methods for controlling the same problem which is weeds in your flowers. That being said, it might be a good idea to put some preen around your plants, as there will be holes in the fabric that could allow some potential weed growth.
@@microhomesteadecology Thank you, I will do that! Valid points!
No no no. Do NOT use weed barrier under gravel. We have gravel. Many sizes of gravel and after 3 or so years, it makes its own dirt. We have weeds galore AND they pull out part of the weed barrier with it. Of course, if you never plan to dig another hole for a new plant, it may not be a problem. I have SO much trouble digging through that darned weed barrier. Think, HAND SAW, to cut through it. You WILL need Preen after a few years. I do like my gravel but we spent months pulling weeds. This year I discovered Preen. Hope it works.
@@cl3514 This is exactly my problem. I don't know what to do. I bought both Preen and weed fabric but haven't opened either yet. I was out of town for three weeks and the weeds completely overgrew the garden.
Weed fabric or barriers work by blocking light from the weed seeds present in your surface soil. They do all break down with time depending on many factors.....the most notable being the quality of the weed fabric. In my experience you get what you pay for. Also very coarse materials, like jagged rocks, that receive heavy foot traffic, like in a path for example, will wear away at the fabric over time. I do agree that a good approach would be the fabric to start the process followed by annual preen applications to keep weeds from coming up in the gravel. Dust and other organic matter will build up in gravel mulch and allow some weeds to sprout. It's just the natural process playing out.
this stuff was added to my yard grass, now its killing it. is there anything i can to , when is the right time to add more grass seeds . thank you
It is my understanding that you are going to want to look for another culprit. This stuff doesn't kill living plants if applied as directed. Perhaps you have a bug issue or a lack of water issue?
There is a lot of bugs around specially mosquitoes 🦟
I would recommend finding a local garden center. They will likely be a better resource for helping you figure out exactly what's going on in your specific instance. Local knowledge is a very valuable thing when it comes to plants and lawn care issues.
Thank you will do
My problem is clover or creeping woodsorrel growing straight out of my Sweet Golden Flag plants (Acorus Ogon). These plants are infested, I've been pulling the weeds out by hand but it's difficult because you can pull the plant out as well. I'm not sure if Preen will control this after we pull the clover out, it's probably growing without reseeding. Any advice on how to kill the weeds and not the plant would be appreciated. Remember, these have infested the Golden Sweet Flag so any treatment will also touch the good plant.
That's a tough one... Preen isn't likely to help as I think your right about those plants regrowing from roots. So tough when they have infested a plant you don't want to hurt.
Have you used this on paver brick patios? Pulling these little weeds between the bricks is killing me!
I actually have at one of our old houses and it was great, as long as your weeds are from seed and not from root expansion.....you can also maybe try polymer sands between your pavers. The sand bonds together when you wet it down and I think forms a weed proof barrier....but I am not 100% sure. We used to have the dang ants set up shop in our pavers which was a fun mess too.
Vinegar and salt. I have @80 x 6 feet of slate walkway. Couldn't survive without vinegar. I add some Citrisolv for the orange fragrance so my entry doesn't smell like a salad. Preen works great for my lily garden and lavender garden. Been using it for years.
I have a gravel driveway that weeds love to grow in. Do you think I can apply Preen to my gravel driveway to prevent weeds from growing?
Absolutely. I've done it actually. Be forewarned though that it takes water to activate it so you're going to want to water it down or apply it before a good rain. There is an extended season version that would be perfect for this type of application. Hit it in the spring and see if it makes a difference.
@@microhomesteadecology I put it down on my entire driveway, I will find out if it works or not. I'll put more down in a few weeks just to make sure it is covered well.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
@@DAS-Videos how did the Preen work on your gravel last year??
@@chloe5susan I slowed the weeds, but not all that much. I never used it again. Now I let them start growing and spray some week killer on them.

If I’m on well and septic is Preen still okay to use?
We are here and had no issues that I am aware of. This application should be only impacting the top inch or so of soil I believe.
Do you know how long this product lasts ? How often do I have to reapply
I think 60-90 days unless you use the extended control. Then it says six months if I remember correctly.
Does Preem control velvet grass?
I don't have much experience with that. Lots of grass sprouts from runner roots under the soil. If that's the case then no it won't. If it's a seed based grass then you might find that it controls it.
can it be used on vegetable patch?
I would not because I plant seeds in my veggie beds. If you did use it, you'd only be able to grow transplants.
What kills binder vine? I have huge amounts on my property.
I assume you mean bindweed or morning glory which is a very difficult weed to control. I have found the most effective way to control a bad infestation is high quality weed fabric. The second best approach that has worked for me is deep mulching and consistent pulling to weaken the massive root mass that is supporting the plant. Harsh weed killers aren't even effective for eradication as they generally just kill the foliage but leave the roots alive at their deepest layers so the plants come back. It is a weed we are constantly dealing with here in our yard and I fear we always will.
@@microhomesteadecology I have a lot of this stuff and I'm going to try and stump and brush killer. That stuff works great on other types of plants because it kills down to the roots.
And what did you decide about your raspberry beds?
You know I never got around to getting it in there, and the whole time we were harvesting raspberries last fall I was cussing the weeds and thinking about this video. I am planning on trying it this season just to keep things in check.
Will Preen harm my flowers such as. Daisy,Black eyes tree
It should not harm any existing plants but I'd double check the label to make sure. It's only real function is to keep seeds from germinating, unless you get the product with added fertilizer then it also feeds existing plants.
Does this work for milk weed?
If you are referring to common milkweed then I'm afraid not. Common milkweed spreads via rhizomes and can become quite invasive. Preen only keeps seeds from sprouting and will not have an impact on existing plant roots.
What time of year would I apply it?
I usually do it in the spring. In theory the 6 month stuff should last through the summer. It needs to be watered in, so before a good spring rain would be perfect timing.
@@microhomesteadecology Thank you. That was my guess, but wanted to be sure.
does it work on stilitgrass?
In theory it should work on any plant trying to start growth from seed, though I'm not familiar with the specific plant you're referring to.
Would u trust this with a vegetable garden?
Negative... I plant way too many seeds in my garden and I'm not sure it's approved for food production.
They make a preen for vegetable beds.
Question for you will Preen kills weeds already grown inthe flowers garden?????
Negative. Preen only keeps the seeds in the ground from being able to sprout. We usually pull the existing weeds then apply the preen to keep from having to pull new weeds later.
Nice to see Louis CK working again.
Anything that helps.
Why does everyone think they need an intro and theme song. It's just a YT vid about herbicide.
Interesting perspective. Thanks for watching.
Unfortunately, Preen contains chemicals that are harmful or kill earthworms, honey bees and other pollinators which you need for the garden. It also affects the water table and is harmful to fish if you are near water. I wouldn't use it. Wish there was a better solution.
Thanks for sharing! That hasn't been my experience. There are still tons of worms in my beds and the bees were all over everything that grew there. The package does however indicate the harm to fish that you've indicated so it's definitely something to keep in mind.
I searched my name and this came :/
Interesting. I wonder why?
My name actually Preen though...i searched preen
I Don't use anything that's called preen. 😂 if I laugh at the name of it why would i use it. It's called preen. Preen! 😂
Thanks for the comment. 😁
