    It's an interesting observation that Zakir just sits there for about 40 minutes just getting into the feeling and absorbs the vibes of the other musician before actually starting to get involved in contributing to the music with his wonderful playing. In western culture this would be considered absurd to have 2 musicians on stage and not have the other one play for half the set but i love it! The act of listening to the music becomes part of the performance and blends the boundary between audience and the performers!

    Thanks for the upload! Both Ustads are amazing!! The fact that sitar could hold fort for 35 minutes on its own, making the great Zakir Hussain ji waiting is a testament to the quality of the Sitar baaja by Shujaat Khan ji

      It’s mutual respect and a testemant to Zakirji’s humbleness.

      Umm. That’s a nice sentiment, but this is the standard practice in Indian classical instrumental music. The instrumentalist, say sitar or sarod player, will typically play a 30-40 minute alaap, unaccompanied by tabla. Only after that they will start the “gat” portion of the performance which is where the tabla player joins in. Any performance of Indian classical music will follow this format. It is nothing unique to Shujaat Khan-sahib or anybody else. All tabla players, Zakirji included; are expected to sit patiently and attentively while the alaap portion is going on.

    After the remastering and improved sound of this amazing performance, one can see how once upon a time was great and tayyar Shujaat Khan. His amazing jhala was out of this world for spontaneity, stamina and speed. Electrifying!! Words again fail to describe the greatness of Zakir. Just astounding!! No one will ever come close to his greatness where both solo and sangat is concerned. Subhanallah Allah for both!!

    Zakir is the combination of all the gharana of Tabla players of the generation's.
    The mastery, melodic variation and sweetness, sometimes feel may not be humanly possible. Flawless. God of Tabla.🙏🙏
    Also my sincere thanks to Haidar Sab for bringing all such nearly lost live recodings. 👍👍

    • @shivabreathes
      @shivabreathes Před 3 lety +1

      I noticed exactly the same thing. Both musicians are frustrated by the sound issues. Unfortunately I’ve seen this type of thing so many times in Indian classical music performances. Sound setup is often very haphazard and disorganised. It is a huge distraction for the musicians if they can’t hear themselves well through the monitors, or if there is too much echo coming back from the main sound system etc. Lay audience have no idea about the practical aspects of giving live music performances.

    I just want to say something else here: why is it that organizers of our music concerts do not put the date and venue of events for viewers to see. For example, judging from how Shujaat looks in this video, this event must have been close to 20 or more years ago. It is important for dates and place of venues to be given for the sake of keeping historical records of musical events.

    En effet, la musique comme toutes nos activités dites modernes évoluent vers une technicité qui s'éloigne de l'esthétique. Celle-ci illustre au contraire l'équilibre, la maîtrise à réaliser entre harmonie et technicité.

    • @paulghils8124
      @paulghils8124 Před 7 lety

      Indeed, just like all contemporary activities in our modern world , music is often taking a highly technical turn which alienates it from aesthetics. On the contrary, this piece is an illustration of how harmony and technicity can be happily balanced and mastered. [P.S. The "foreign" language was used to show that English is not the only language in the world, just like music is not limited to Western, Indian, or any other tradition. In the same way, I had asked that a comment in Hindi be translated into a European language].

    • @akshayvats8603
      @akshayvats8603 Před 7 lety

      +Paul Ghils yeah music is something extraordinary it need so much dedication to master any instrument or vocal. No, actually translator couldn't help to get the meaning. Good luck for music :)

    • @paulghils8124
      @paulghils8124 Před 7 lety

      Certainly, music is a unique human creation. What I meant is that some composers, for example in European contemporary classical music, tend to produce very abstract, almost mathematical pieces whose aesthetic component is impoverished by this a highly theoretical approach.

    Bageshri is one of my favorite Raag. It is calmative. And in the hands of Vilayat Khan, it could be a nectar! Nay, it could be downright an aphrodisiac!
    It is a paradox. This man, sorry, this sitar wizard's n ame is Vilayat. It means a foreigner!! And the Pied Piper oozes Indian ethnicity all the way down to his silken designer Kurta! (J N Ponda aka Jashwant Narsidas Ponda Sole Proprietor of The Phoenix Library....)
    The ironies of life never cease to mock me! . Indian classical music is a fusion of Hindus and Muslims!!! Both have contributed enormously, incredibly towards it's evolution!! Unbelievable past-masters strode on the crest of it's waves from both the communities.
    And yet the divide, a chasm remains. The festering sore from partition still suppurates! The hatred endures...... It is one those mysteries wrapped in an enigma and covered in a riddle!
    At no time in the history of human race the extinction of the human race was so threatened as now. At no time was the freedom so menaced and justice so threatened! If Indian Classical Music and Dance is subtly played all around the planet, we could still be saved! ( J N Ponda)
    But who will listen? Mine is just a cry in wilderness like many others!
    Sorry, there has been some mix-up in the above comments. But this is a case of "Like father, like son"!! So these comments could be applicable to Shujat's video as well! Even though the cherub gave his father a son-stroke by leaving his home at about age ten!!!
