For those who can't see the difference, it's in the very beginning, when you put the needle to the thread. With the French knot you can just lay the needle onto the string and start wrapping. With the Colonial knot you have to start with a sort of half wrap up the needle

Could not work out the French knot via diagram that says rap thread around needle.
Your video made perfect sense. Crossing the thread as well as rapping around the needle.

Hmm, they might look very similar, but definitely the method of wrapping the thread on the needle is different ;)

It's the rap then the figure of 8 but before putting the needle into the fabric.
The figure of bit is the colonel part.
