  • Inside the Prepper Movement: Preparing for Disaster and Ensuring Survival
Preppers, or survivalists, are individuals who actively prepare for emergencies, including possible disruptions in social or political order, on scales ranging from local to international. Their preparations can include establishing self-sufficient food and water supplies, learning survival skills, and arranging for self-defense. The motives behind such activities often stem from fears of natural disasters, economic collapse, pandemics, or other catastrophic events. Prepping involves not just stockpiling resources but also planning for sustainability and independence, with a strong emphasis on adaptability and resilience. The movement has grown more visible and gained broader acceptance over recent years, particularly in light of real-world crises that underscore the fragility of modern infrastructures.

Anyone watching this from the UK... don't bug-out to the woods... Our island isn't big enough for everyone to be running around outside. Bug-in for as long as possible, barricade your home. In the meantime, grow your own veg, hone your skills, you could also get some chickens (no rooster tho, not encouraged in domestic areas lol) Map your surroundings, find an alternate water source, get fit, improve your health where possible. The people in this video just walking out to their bug-out location looks easy, imagine if all around you was chaos! Keep it achievable, attainable. It’s easy for new preppers to feel overwhelmed or an anxious drive to “catch up.”

A lot of preppers are not like this. Many of us are not planning on going to the wilderness. We will stay in our small towns, out in the country, maintaining our gardens, our small livestock, our fruit trees. We get exercise. We can, dehydrate, pickle, ferment, dehydrate and cold store our produce and some of our meats. We have made wine, beer and vinegar. We are ready for hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, power outages, economic shortages. We have years ago moved to a smaller town where crime is much less of a lifestyle. We live like our ancestors who either lived through the great depression, WWI and WWII or settled unoccupied land.
On our half acre we have two raised beds, an in ground garden, many small beds and pots. He have 20 vegetables, 25 herbs, 14 fruit trees, a grape vine and 20 berry bushes. Many of these trees and bushes have been purchased in bulk from our state department of natural resources at a very low price. Our garden seeds are purchased in the fall when seeds go on sale. Likewise, our groceries, clothes and other purchases are purchased when they are on sale. Winter clothes are bought in the spring, meat is bought in bulk packages and cut to servings and then frozen, dehydrated or canned.
We have already seen shortages, so our pantry is larger than most. Our pantry contains food from our garden, purchased canned goods, salt, oils, fats, flour, yeast, dried beans and lentils, dog food, condiments, paper goods, detergents, lubricants, nails, screws, hardware, rope, chain, tarps, light bulbs, batteries, fertilizers, fuels, canning supplies, hygeine supplies, medicines and so on. All these that could age out get used oldest first, first in first out.
In the garden we have over a year's worth of vegetables. We compost regularly, grass clippings, vegetable trimmings, shredded and chipped plants. We continue to use power equipment, a tiller, a lawn mower, but when fuel is unavailable we have the tools and practice to use hand tools.
While we don't hunt we practice shooting. We reload brass and shotshell. We also fish and keep a meal or two per month of fish. We do a lot of things that reduce our regular cost of living, we hang our laundry outside, we repair things ourselves, we sharpen our own tools, we cook most of our meals. We had our first pizza for the year last week.

Thankfully gone are the days where preppers were seen as the weird conspiracy theorists with gun bunkers.
I personally live in the pacific ring of fire, mountain shattering Earthquakes, storm surges, forest annihilating Typhoons, even floods are a regular occurrence on top of the summer fires in the suburbs. The logistics are a nightmare because most of them rely on ships and the roads wind up in foresty mountains which have historically been riddled with fallen trees after calamities.
I do not think you would have to worry about human threats in 3 to 5 days, likely in my experience here in the ring of fire the people are more resilient, but there was a time the storm was so bad it suspended all government, utilities, networks and logistical lines for months. That was when it got dangerous and people started looting stores, after the stores they started to target ATM machines. The few remaining police stopped all patrols to focus on maintaining peace to the last remaining fuel reserves on the island so everywhere was chaos that all commercial establishments basically shut down and boarded up.
There was nowhere to bug out and the best people could do was establish nightwatch rotations since thieves would increase in activity and walk around roofs stalking empty broken houses at night.

when shtf, you can't stay in any building, or above ground camp. You can't hunt or fish without getting shot. YOu have to dig a tunnel and stay in it for a year, while the 99% die-off. Come out only at night,, to access a food bucket and cook a meal. You need a year's supply of food already scatter- buried at your BOL, which has to be in the woods around your local water source, cause you wont be going any further. You'll get sniped or burned-out (at night) if you try to stay in any building or above ground camp.

Same here in the rural areas of the UK. I'm 73 and learned what is now called prepping from my parents and grandparents. It was normal country living to keep a good pantry and everything you need. Cars were not the norm in rural areas back then so we couldn't just drive to a shop to buy something. My grandparents were virtually self-sustaining and I learned good lessons from them. It all started changing here in the late 1960s
