John Altman was superb as Nasty Nick . Great actor. British Legend !
It's funny how that kind of language flew at 7pm back then even as late as 1985!
those words were muttered right up to 1993
There was a lot of swearing in the early days, including racial abuse. ‘Bastard’ was said a lot.
Nowadays they get away with saying the F word on other shows……
I may not have been born back then, but this is one of the most awesome scenes ever to occur in EastEnders history!
I wasn't born then either, but in my opinion this scene has to be proper Eastenders, rather than Phil Mitchell consently pranking Ian Beale.
@harryraiswell2158 I know what you mean. Although the latter does look a little bit roadrunner/coyote ish, personally I never minded those scenes.
Now THIS was EastEnders at its best. The characters were diverse but they knew when to get together for a common good. They really cared about each other. Contrast this with the cast today -- emoting everywhere, all locked in their individual hells. And nobody says "Naff off!" any more which is a shame.
I do say "Naff off!" so it's not a shame.
This was when a multicultural society worked, when they actually integrated. So Nick was the bad guy in this!
When he says "Naff off" he sounds like Steptoe lol.
When Tony Carpenter says leave boy alone, he sounds just like Mr Miyagi. Now that would be funny Nick Cotton taking on Mr Miyagi.
There's a channel in the UK currently airing classic episodes of Eastenders, and quite a huge portion of this scene was cut, even when it was shown late at night
It's the Drama channel and it's the one with the purple "D".
Yes, it's because of the offensive language like "naff off"
@@doctor_gibbo1392 i think the n word is worst
@@doctor_gibbo1392 No, it's the "Two n*gg*rs, two pakis, one stupid turk and one soldier boy wants to have a word with you".
I love Ali's look when he charges up to Nick at 1:19.
Brilliant.When Eastenders was good!!
0:58 There's the Eastenders version of the walk from the start of the Eye of the Tiger music video by survivor!!!!
Plus a lot of soaps were a bit more grittier in the 80s.
That language though! was this aired on TV without censorship? Those must of been the days. Now everyone pussyfoots around taboo issues such as bad language.

So much for Freedom of speech
I was shocked by it at first, but the reason Lofty used it was probably because Nick's used those names for each of them before-now they're gonna get 'im!
Alexander Jones exactly. But theres no offence needed to be taken by such names,, white people had their own nicknames given to em aswell.
Alexander Jones It was Ali who said that, not Lofty.
Gritty eastenders 1985 to 1991
Yeah, about right. Though it started to soften a little bit from 1989. The grittiest years were 85-88.
If Ali was still around, he'd run a barbers shop.
Have you noticed that Tony looks at Lofty but the next scene when Saeed goes up to Nick, he looks at Saeed & Nick? And Kelvin is behind Ali when he charges up to Nick and when Saeed charges up to Nick, he's beside Tony.
I know Phil Mitchell wasn't in Eastenders back then, but this scene probably would've been complete if he was in the gang!
Probably would have been the first to storm out of the cafe! 😂
He's saying it about his own group. It's not bad. The Black and Asian people with him don't care so why should we?
exactly! He made fun of himself aswell so its not racist
At 01:25 that was a knee to the balls to that shop keeper man and then nick was pushed by Tony and then got a hiding
Saeed Jeffery is his name.
2 Ns?
Wow!
No way you'll hear that now on EastEnders.
I’m surprised they haven’t started saying the F word at this point, not gonna lie………
lol funny video good old fashioned way to get pay back 👍
i love this scene
he siad the n word
1:10
Wow didn't know they used those sorts of words on TV back then, is this really Eastenders? It's like something from the seedy 70's, (which I like) the Eastenders of today is unrecognisable.
started in late 80s
Because this isnt race baiting,, race baiting is pretending to stick up for one demographic when in reality they are pitting you against the other side. Youll find saying such names was a sign of endearment more than anything,, blacks and whites would mock each other. Now its creating victims to help in its push to divide.
Started in 1985.

Those so called words were muttered right up to 1993 I believe
They even left that line in the repeat during the show's 10th anniversary from Feb to May '95 when they showed the repeats from the start at around 10am!
I wonder if UK Gold broadcast it as it was originally?
Because I have seen episodes that was new in the early 00's repeated on that channel with some understandable and yet some pointless edits!
@@WillTube1990 nothing should be edited. I'm sick and tired of the PC brigade ruining everything for everyone.
1:25 he confirms that he's just punched Nick by saying "yes".
Ali: We know we can't rely on the police, right? And anyway, one or two people have things they don't want looking into. But we can't carry on letting Nick do what the hell he wants to. Agreed?
Naima: Hhm, yeah.
Sue: Yes, agreed.
Tony: So we will have to give him a lesson he will never forget and we will have to do it ourselves.
Sue: It's Kelvin!
Kelvin: It's Nick! He's under the bridge and it looks like he's giving Mark a hard time.
Sue: What!
Naima: Why, wait?
Saeed: Let's do it now. Let's do it now, we're all together. Come on.
Miss Nick and Mark.
haha
Naff off!
Epic use of bad language.
It's not bad language, they're racial slurs.
leave mark fowler alone
Gettin' hard there Stuart
Nick cotton .was all gob sny way .dont no why they were all scared a him
What a scene! The beeb using the N word (not cool BTW), Lofty (1:20 🤣🤣🤣) doing his best hard man pose and failing miserably and to cap it off, 1:35 the Muslim woman creaming her knickers while Nick is receiving a pasting
rodster6 The one who said that was Ali, not Lofty.
rodster6 due to the fact I found the scene in general hilarious, I didn’t want to be misconstrued as finding people being called the n word funny. I understood the context in which the words was used. I just didn’t want to be misunderstood.
The Muslim woman is Naima Jeffery.
How old was nick here?
