'Shameful': Sir Lindsay Hoyle heckled for breaking precedent with Labour Gaza amendments

  • Sir Lindsay Hoyle faced cries of “shameful” and “bring back Bercow” as he explained his reasoning for selecting both the Labour and the Government Gaza amendments.
The Commons Speaker said: “I can inform the House that there is a precedent for an official opposition spokesperson being called second in the debate and move an amendment before a minister was called to speak in the debate in the circumstances.”
Hoyle said Labour’s amendment will be voted on first, followed by the SNP motion and then the Government’s amendment.

So the government can spend time with the opposition discussing some other countries problems but won't discuss and sort out our own problems okay

    • @seanscanlon9067
      @seanscanlon9067 Před 6 měsíci +3

The government and opposition discuss UK problems all the time, but when it comes to a motion, if the opposition put forward a vote on anything to help with our own problems, the government won the last election with an 80 seat majority so they will just vote it down. For example 309 Conservative MPs voted against forcing rented homes to be made fit for human habitation. No Labour, Liberal Democrat or SNP MPs voted against it.
Currently, there aren’t any specific rules in effect requiring private landlords in England to provide properties that are ‘fit for human habitation’. Instead local authorities can force landlords to deal with serious health and safety hazards that pose risks to the people living in the property.
The government opposed a recent amendment that would have introduced such a rule for private rented properties, saying that it would add unnecessary regulation and cost to landlords, and ultimately higher rents for tenants.
87 or nearly 1 in 5 Conservative MPs are landlords. Maybe that is just a coincidence though.

@@fc4660 Yes, this from the Guardian currently on their front page:
"Hours away from the biggest rebellion of his leadership, Starmer decided to intervene personally and visited Hoyle in his office behind the House of Commons chamber. [...]
the Labour leader warned Hoyle that Labour MPs’ security was at risk. Many had been deluged by criticisms, threats and abuse since abstaining on a similar SNP motion in November. With hundreds of protesters congregating outside parliament, they worried worse might be to come."
So basically the far-left and Muslims demanding a ceasefire posed such a threat to these MPs, Starmer convinces Hoyle to destroy his job + the entire process. Starmer had many opportunities prior to this to propose a Labour ceasefire, but chooses the pull the trigger on SNP's opposition day.

The government is bothered by Israel because they have invested money, time, and personnel in bombing, planning a cash agreement in securing infrastructure work, advisory services. Plus if they pull out now, it opens up conversations on war crime or excessive use of force. The British government needs a good shake up. Labour are crooks, tories are crooks, Conservative are just tories pretending not to be tory crooks. Basically, they are all crooks and have a good thing going. None of them will put forward a sensible candidate in the general election that will serve a democratic society.
We should be like France, complain, protest, take days off work, and disrupt the money laundering system in place. I didn't vote for my taxes to pay for invading another country or causing chaos around the world.

SNP put forward a motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Hoyle has broken tradition on allowing amendments by allowing one from the opposition party, Labour.
Tories, and possibly others, are now asking why? The rumour is that Starmer has promised Hoyle that he can remain as Speaker if Labour win the GE.
There have been reports that Starmer and Sue Gray were seen in repeated and long conversations with Hoyle.
The Speaker is supposed to be neutral and after the blatant partisanship of the last Speaker, Bercow, this doesn't look good.
