I was a little kid with my mom when I first visited LA, California, to see some relatives. We were walking on the streets and people in cars were looking at us as if we were odd people. Later, we were told a mom and kids shouldn't be walking on the street like that. Years later, friends from university did a bike trip along the West Coast. They passed by LA and were told they shouldn't be biking around in that part of LA. Then, years later, a colleague from work told me he was in NY for work. He was driving, made a wrong turn and ended up in some neighborhood in New Jersey. A police car intercepted him, asked him what he was doing there, and then told him he shouldn't be here. Then, the cop escorted him out of the neighborhood.
That is the "land of the free"

I lived in Kunming for almost 1 year working as a math teacher. Sometimes I walked from my apt building to my school at 5 am in the morning without any fear of being robbed or attacked. Transportation was readily available everywhere at an affordable price. With Didi, the metro, and rental bikes, I was able to go anywhere I wanted. I sure do miss the 2-hour lunches and eating in the buffet-style school cafeteria for 1 USD. Even though I struggled with communication outside of school, I definitely had it good. Here in Florida, I still work as a teacher but only get 20 minutes to practically swallow my lunch ☹

I AM WHITE, BUT I FULLY UNDERSTAND HOW YOU ARE FEELING AS AN AFRICAN AMERICAN AND I AGREE ENTIRELY WITH YOU! UNLIKE MANY FOREIGNERS WHO DO NOT KNOW CHINA AND THE CHINESE, MOST CHINESE ARE GREAT PEOPLE AND MUCH MORE OPEN-MINDED THAN PEOPLE IN THE WEST AND THEY ARE ALSO MUCH MORE TOLERANT OF DIFFERENCES THAN MANY PEOPLE THINK IN THE US, CANADA OR EUROPE AND THEY CAN MAKE THE GREATEST OF FRIENDS, WILLING TO GO THE EXTRA-LENGTH TO BE THERE FOR YOU IN TIMES OF NEED! I LOVE THE CHINESE TOO! I LIVE IN CANADA WHERE TRANSPORTATION OUGHT TO BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD BECAUSE THE COUNTRY IS HUGE AND DISTANCES ENORMOUS, BUT THEY ARE NOT ADEQUATE ENOUGH, WHEREAS IN CHINA, THEY HAVE MADE A HUGE EFFORT SO THAT EVERYBODY MAY MOVE FROM PLACE TO PLACE EASILY, FAST AND COMFORTABLY, AS WELL AS CHEAP! CANADA IS NOT THAT BAD, BUT, SORRY CANADIANS WHO CRITICIZE CHINA SO MUCH, CHINA IS FAR MORE ADVANCED IN THIS REGARD! AND IT IS ALSO TRUE AS TO SAFETY, SINCE NOW DRUG ADDICTS ROAM BIG CANADIAN CITIES AND VIOLENCE IS ON THE RISE EVERYWHERE IN CANADA, AND DON'T RELY ON THE POLICE BECAUSE THEY WILL DO NOTHING TO HELP YOU! THAT IS CANADIAN REALITY! JUST TO GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE : I LIVE IN AN APPARTMENT BUILDING IN MONTREAL AND I WAS ASSAULTED IN THE ELEVATOR BY SOMEBODY WHO WAS BLOCKING THE DOOR, SO THE LIFT WOULD NOT MOVE. I JUST PULLED HIM GENTLY INSIDE TO MAKE HIM UNDERSTAND, THAT HE WAS BLOCKING AND THAT WE WOULD NOT MOVE UNLESS HE CAME FURTHER INSIDE...HIS REACTION? HE SHOUTED '''DON'T TOUCH ME!'' AND HIT ME WITH HIS FIST. I AM 69 AND WALK WITH A CANE AND THERE ALSO WAS A VERY ELDERLY LADY ON A WALKER WITH US! I LET YOU IMAGINE HOW SCARED SHE WAS! WHEN I TOLD THAT AGRESSIVE LUNY, THAT I WOULD CALL THE POLICE, HE TRIED TO STRANGLE ME WITH HIS ARM ON MY THROAT. THANK GOD, I ARRIVED AT MY FLOOR AND THEN GOT OFF, BUT WHEN I CALLED THE POLICE, THEY CAME AND TREATED ME AGRESSIVELY TOO AND SHOWED UTMOST UNWILLIGNESS TO HELP ME. I SPECIFY, THAT THIS IS HOW THE POLICE TREATS YOU WHEN YOU CALL THEM FOR HELP IN MONTREAL AGAINST CRIMINALS : YOU BECOME THE CRIMINAL! THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN IN CHINA! i HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THAT BUILDING FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAD NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE, BUT I AM NOT THE ONLY ELDERLY EXPERIENCING SUCH AN ATTITUDE FROM THE CANADIAN POLICE. THIS IS WHAT CANADA HAS BECOME PLUS WE HAD SHOOTINGS AND MURDERS IN A COLLEGE, AT CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY AND THE ÉCOLE POLYTECHNIQUE, A TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITÉ DE MONTRÉAL. SO MUCH FOR CANADIAN FREEDOM AND SAFETY!!! AS FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH AMONG CANADIANS? I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU SAY ANYWHERE IN PUBLIC IN CANADA, BECAUSE WE HAVE OUR FASCISTS TOO ALWAYS READY TO BOUNCE ON YOU WITH THEIR AGRESSIVITY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE NEVER INVITED THEM IN YOUR CONVERSATION WITH FRIENDS! NOW, JUST TO CONCLUDE, I WAS ALSO OFFERED A JOB AS A TEACHER IN CHINA, WHICH I ENDED UP REJECTING BECAUSE I AM NOT A SUBMISSIVE PERSON AT ALL AND I WOULD HAVE HAD TO SUBMIT TO SOMEBODY WHO WOULD HAVE CONTROLLED MY TEACHING AND I WAS NOT WILLING TO ACCEPT THAT, BUT THAT IS ME AND I WOULD NEVER SAY, THAT BECAUSE OF THAT THERE IS NO FREEDOM IN CHINA! I AM SURE THAT ALL THAT YOU SAY IS TRUE AND I AM REALLY VERY HAPPY FOR YOU TO SEE THAT YOUR OWN CHINESE EXPERIENCE IS A VERY POSITIVE ONE! ALL MY LOVE AND WISHES OF FURTHER SUCCESS TO YOU! LOVE AND TAKE CARE! BY THE WAY, I STILL STUDY CHINESE ON MY OWN AND I COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT IT! I JUST LOVE THEIR MOVIES, THEIR FOOD AND SO MANY OTHER THINGS! THEY ARE DEFINITELY A GREAT PEOPLE!

I receive a WeChat video from a very, very good friend of mine in China. As the connection is established she says: "Look where I am!" She was sitting in a interrogation chair in a police station. Ok the conversation didn't last very long, but she had time to say: "I've got to go now." I cannot imagine that in other countries a person under arrest can make a video call.
I am not claiming that this is a rule in China, but I lived through many instances where I was surprised. I totally agree with Sabrina. I felt freer in China ... and I haven't even lived as a black person in the USofA.

The following article is written by Ismail Bashmori, he is an Egyptian China watcher.
The truth is that China is the greatest country on the face of the earth. It makes all other countries look insignificant and contemptible. It is the most brilliant, most industrious, most ambitious, most educated, meritocratic and technocratic, most modern, sophisticated, and civilised, and best-governed by far. .
It is the first non-white, non-Western country to reach this status since the 1600s. The determination of this country is indescribable. Supernatural. There is no force that can stop it from accomplishing anything it wants to do.
It doesn’t matter who we are. Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, even Americans. Next to the Chinese, we are pathetic. We can’t do what they do. We would have a mountain, an Everest of changes to make, and we would whine and bicker and fail at every one of them. China’s story since the 1980s has been one of an almost divine metamorphosis.
Next to China the entire Western world from Alaska to New Zealand has stagnated. Next to China the entire developing world from Brazil to Madagascar has progressed only at a crawl.
China is the mother of all gargantuan bullet trains. Every day it manages to create something new and astonishing. And unlike the United States, unlike the British Empire, unlike the French, Dutch, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese or any other Western nation that had its turn at being a superpower in the past four centuries, China doesn’t need to run anybody over or take something from somebody else, to rise majestically.
China is also standing up to the West all by herself. The West can’t believe their four-hundred-year-old global supremacy is being challenged. They hoped that the more China developed, the more it would submit to their influence, interests, and leadership. That didn’t happen. So now they will do anything possible, short of a nuclear war, to make China end.
Their goal is to destroy this country. That’s why, although the United States has killed several million people and turned several regions of the earth into hellscapes.
China is the worst fear of our planet’s Western masters. They want you to despise and dread a country that’s done nothing to you, that hasn’t invaded anyone, bombed or sanctioned anyone, that hasn’t overthrown any foreign government, or used its military on anything since 1979.
China is the only major country in the nonwhite developing world, to stand up to the West. To look it in the eye when challenged or threatened.
The Global South are simply Western puppets who submitted long ago. Even the most powerful ones. Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India.
The 1500s-1000s BC were Egypt’s time. Antiquity belonged to the Greeks and Romans. The 1700s belonged to France, and the 1800s to Britain. From 1945 to the present, the world has been under American overlordship. And they call it the Pax Americana but there isn’t much Pax in it.
There’s plenty of Pax if you’re in Europe or Australia. But the Middle East? Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran and Yemen in the past 20 years. Latin America? They’ve destroyed that part of the world beyond any hope of recovery. Africa? It’s only been spared because of disinterest. The US sees Africa as nothing. The whole West does.
But in the twenty-first century, we are witnessing the rise of China. We are decades away from China becoming the greatest power on earth. This will be China’s time, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Attack China all you want, curse her and monger rumours and hysteria - but the truth is that none of your accusations are backed up by evidence. The Western press is under the thumb of Western governments that want to stay on top of the world for eternity. And the truth is that China is not affected by the noise and maneuvers of her enemies.
For her first thirty years, from 1949 to 1979, China was basically blockaded and isolated economically and politically by the West. It didn’t even have a seat in the UN General Assembly. And it was dirt-poor in those days, barely a speck of the global economy, a tiny fraction of Japan’s or Germany’s GDP - not even able to prevent famine. And it still didn’t submit to pressure or take any orders. Why on earth would it do that now?
China will be the next global power. There’s nothing that can be done about that. The first stage is that its economy only needs to grow at 4.7 percent per year to become the world’s largest by 2035. That means the usual, historical bare-minimum of 6 percent is already overkill. The US can build as many bases as it wants, slap as many sanctions as it wants, recognise whatever bogus genocides it wants. That’s what it’s been doing all along. Has any of it made a difference? China can adapt to any situation. It took China a mere ten years to go from being barred by the US Congress from participating in the “International” Space Station, to building its own Space Station from zero.

Chinese people who barely know black friends would be very curious about your skin and hair but they won't attack or be unfriendly to u.

That's only if your income source isn't from China. But if you are actually working a normal job earning a normal wage in China, its basically the same as any other country. So someone who say, has a monthly income of 4K a month USD because they work for any western company, would living a very good middle class life in China. But if they were working the equivalent job in China, they would probably be making 2K a month there.
You can't really compare it when you are basing it not on the average salaries in the country you are staying. Most expats, for better are worse, aren't actually making the average salaries in China, they are still making the average salaries of western countries, so of course their lives are far better.
For reference, the average salary in China is 16K USD equivalent. This means the cost of living in China is based on that, so for people living in that country, its not actually "cheap", its the "norm". PPP doesn't actually measure the cost of living.
That's also why China is still a cheap vacation destination. The Average salary in the US is $50K, which is more than enough for a sweet life there.
And if I wasn't so worried about China going to war all the time, and potentially having a famine, I would probably have wanted to vacation there because its so cheap comparatively, and I like many of the cities there (having been there myself many times).
tl;dr If you can still make your normal US salary, and move to China, then yes, your standard of living will be WAY better. But if you can't, and have to make the local salary rate for that job, then your standard of living is likely to be the same or slightly cheaper. Besides they have better public transportation than most western countries, and if you are like me and hate driving, that's probably a big plus. Just don't talk about politics or human rights and its a fine place to live... for now?

Negative liberty is freedom from interference by other people. Negative liberty is primarily concerned with freedom from external restraint and contrasts with positive liberty (the possession of the power and resources to fulfill one's own potential). The distinction was introduced by Isaiah Berlin in his 1958 lecture "Two Concepts of Liberty".
Thanks to Eric Li for bringing up this idea in one of his public talks when he described freedom in China.

Nowhere is Utopia but some places are more hospitable than others for individuals and Sabrina as a black woman doesn't experience in China the level of discrimination, policing, and insulting hate that is the lot of black people in America because racism though it exists in China isn't institutionalized as in America. Freedom from that means one feels more free and happier. Also she experiences freedom from the problems that really plague America: infrastructure decay, outdated transportation systems, gun violence and crime due to massive inequality that is also fueling broad economic insecurity. In contrast these are areas China is excelling in and Sabrina is free to enjoy. Chinese people are enjoying a greater measure of Personal Freedom than in the past largely due to the country's economic dynamism and growth. They don't have the political freedom Westerners IDEALIZE but their conception of democracy is differently defined.

@@stoa7302 I actually don't believe we have democracy in the west anymore. As I understnd democracy is when well informed people make well informed decissions. Not many people in the west are well informed. Our media constantly lies to us, our politicians are often bought and corrupt and we can't even be sure our elections are fair. I would much rather have a bunch of intelligent CEO's, open to scrutiny, running the show, only caring about the people and their national interests.
