What Is The Extra Protection That Ukrainian Abrams Tanks Get

  • About three months ago, Ukraine received 31 American M1A1 Abrams tanks. These tanks, initially lacking certain essential features to comply with export restrictions, are now undergoing enhancements to bolster their level of protection.
A U.S.-supplied M1A1 Abrams tank, now in service with Ukraine, seems to have been equipped with explosive reactive armor. Recent video footage and images show the tank's hull now featuring explosive-filled bricks, providing additional protection against incoming anti-tank rounds and other weaponry.
The visuals of this upgraded M1A1 surfaced on different social media platforms on January 14, 2024. However, there is currently no independent verification to confirm the exact location and date of the captured videos and images.
According to experts, the dynamic protection bricks are the first generation of Abrams Reactive Armor Tiles, known as ARAT.
From the available footage, it is evident that ARAT dynamic protection units have been installed on a tank's aprons, which typically cover the hull. Surprisingly, these protective elements were not observed in other critical areas like the front and side extensions of the turret or the front of the hull, although these areas are designed to accommodate such protection. This setup mirrors the configuration of American M1A1SA Abrams tanks, where reactive armor, like in their Ukrainian counterparts, is rarely found in areas other than the side aprons.

lol... those are just thin armour panels to protect running gear and tracks... anybody with any degree of armour knowledge knows these panels have been present on virtually every variant of Abrams tanks since it's inception. they are not ERA bricks.

The Ukrainians wont get our DU armor panels. They allegedly have developed their own and installed them on the donation tanks. Im skeptical that they have the logistical prowess to keep the Abram operational. Even if they do manage that part of running the Abrams effectively....they have Russian missles to consider. All it takes to remove an Abrams from the battlefield is a lack of fuel and Russian missiles will eventually be used to accomplish that task. I think we will see abandoned Abrams or fuel depots going up in flames.

Our borders are wide open and we are being invaded and this is only one of many problems we need to focus on. I can guarantee that the vast majority of us citizens do not support this war, the tyrant Zelenski or wasting anything else on either. Really looking forward to seeing Ukrainian Abrams in combat. I doubt there will be very many tank vs tank battles as this doesn’t seem to be the war is being waged in Ukraine. They will be far more useful in combined arms combat in conjunction with IFVs, infantry and especially if they achieve air superiority with F-16s. The Russians have no ability or concept how to fight or defend in this type of warfare. No single weapons systems is a game changer by itself, but if Ukraine can successfully use Modern MBTs, IFVs, F-16s, HIMARs etc. for mutual support in combat, THAT will be the game change and we might see Ukraine steamroll over the Russian Orcs. Spring or Summer will tell the tale on this. I just hope that the American congress can get their act together and get the funding to support Ukraine’s war against Putin’s invasion.
