I scratched my Rolex pretty good... Submariner one year update

  • Scratches happen, its part of wearing your watches. Though it is never fun. At what point should you refinish your scratched (or in my case gouged) luxury watch? Sometimes we can get carried away as watch enthusiasts. I share my opinion in this video, as well as a one year update on wearing this beauty.

To be fair, everyone will have a different stance on scratches on watches.
Personally think there is something deeply charming about a watch that shows it has seen life. That's also why I will never be overly careful with a watch.

Hi Bruce, it’s your friend Bruce Bezel from Brent Miller Time, Lancaster PA. OMG this video saved me last night. Out of the blue a day after reappraising at RSC a scratch showed up on my new 126613LN case back. WTF? It also could have be me, watch got caught on the lip of the table by accident. Either way this happens? I then found your video and I had came to the exact conclusion as you did! But hearing it from you really finalized this issue in my head and I was able to move forward. 😊😊😊Thank you so much for this video my brother! Yeah, the first scratch is always a WTF?! moment. There's a quick thought this isn't going to be enjoyable to wear anymore and maybe I should just flip it. But, give it some time and you may realize it's no big deal and just move on with it. Of course, it depends on the severity of the damage. But, in most common use cases, it's liberating to just forgive and forget keep loving it.

Very nice video. Scratches always hurt, but I think, they add to a watch in what will become YOUR watch. I have a Sinn EZM 7 for about a year now, which was my grail piece, because I'm a voluteer fire fighter and it's just the perfect piece. And about a week ago, I was doing some work in the garden and we were lifting a big stone trough and it happened. I heavily scratched the clasp of the metal bracelet. It's ugly and I hate myself for being so stupid, but it's just what it is and it's not the end of the world. But also it would have happened innevitably in a future emergency, where my fire brigade would be called and we would be doing heavy work, where I can't focus on my watch not getting bashed. Keep up the great work.
    Greetings from Germany.

I think you're dealing with this with the right attitude though. At the end of the day, it's one hell of a lot of money to spend on a watch if you aren't going to wear it and get full out of it, and you can't do that if you're petrified of scratching it all the time. And like you said, you can always get it repaired in the future after it's picked up more scratches, should you feel the need to.

We can see with a magnifying glass whether a watch has been lasered or not. Lasered watches are not interesting for collectors, worse than scratches and even worse than polish.
Let the watch the way it is, in 30 years, the watch is all over with scratches and a potential new buyer is happy - because he gets an unpolished tool watch, that was actually used.
I bought a 16800 Sub from 1982 approx. recently, 100% unpolished fat case, watch was only worn for a very short period on a metal bracelet, as there are no dents whatsoever from the endlinks.
Do you think I like the watch less, because it has scratches on the sides? Nah…imagine the watch was 40 years old NOS and how brand new scratches would be a pain then…

Same thing happened to me on a watch that was (at the time) the most expensive watch I had ever owned and had only owned for less than 24 hours. I’m glad you wear that watch for it’s intended purpose...However, camping? Camping!? Bruce, I realize this was a freak accident and you were not camping at the time…Get a metal G-Shock for camping…For a Seiko Alpinist! I swim with my Rolex… I go camping and skiing a couple times a year… I would argue that the Rolex is not the best watch for that job/hobby/recreation…Cheers!

It´s not a scratch. It´s a war scar! Think about it, soldier.

Sound advice! I remember getting all bummed out over a scratch on a Khaki King. Now, most of my watches I see as keepers and wear and tear doesn’t bother me... much

Hi. Bruce you can refinish it with a soft sand paper and a rooter with cotton clothes ,Idid a scratche on my tissot and I could remove it

Buff it with some very fine sandpaper, then polish it.

Great stuff Bruce. I regularly tune in to your channel. I share many of your insights as such Simplifying a collection to more quality pieces, $ vs quality/ value etc. You should do a video on your favourite micro brands. I picked up a unimatic, yeah it’s a cheap seiko movement and bit of a fashion watch. But it’s a nice fun beater watch with a lot of personality. Keep up the good work and wish you continued success!

I remember scratching my first decent watch just days after I bought it (I was half away and hit it against a metal door handle getting into work). I was mad at my self for a week. I realized that for light scratches they sort of go away a bit (smooths out). I'm glad I didn't go and buff it out (there are downsides to that too).

Looks like you get a nick on the edge too. The 2nd day of getting mine , I got a small tiny nick on the edge of the case. I also don’t know how 😢 it seems that Rolex is using softer metals

This is what I'm not gonna do, I'm not gonna freak out and then comes the video that actually is telling me that you're freaking out. The same thing happened to me when I got my first automatic watch. a Breitling Super Avenger II. I went on vacation swimming playing valleyball in a swimming pool the watch got all scratched up, but I still like it and enjoy wearing it. Can I polish it of course I can, but I'm not gonna do it, because I'm the type of watch collector that don't like polishing watches.

Oh man, that would drive me crazy! It is such a special piece. Truthfully, if it were mine, I probably would have it fixed. I have a hairline scratch on the bezel of my grail watch, a Jack Heuer Autavia 80th chrono reissue, and it still pains me although I have learnt to live with it.
I agree that watches are to be enjoyed and scratches are a part of that journey with your timepiece. Unfortunately, I am OCD, and collecting mainly Seikos for 50 years has turned out to be a blessing. For some reason, the scratches that I have accumulated on my 32 Seiko watches don’t bother me in the least, even on my 6139 Pogue which I bought new. If my Turtle, for example, would get too badly bashed up, I would just buy another. For some reason, Seikos are exempted from my obsessive tendencies.

Oh that’s sad man. Condolences. Found a weird scratch in the bevel on the lug of my Tudor BBgmt. It crossed the polished bevel and into the circular brushing. I was able to fix it with an Emory board (those 7 sided multi grit ones). Yours is beyond those skills. I respect your attitude. I couldn’t do it.

It seems like Rolex 904 SS scratches and dings easier then 316L SS. I prefer Damasko or Sinn hardened steel watches for just this reason. I do however want to buy a Rolex Explorer.

I feel like if you want a polish, you gotta wait a long time to do that. You don't want to rush out and remove every ding, before you know it, the case is going to lose its shape. Gotta conserve that steel for the decades to come!

About six weeks after buying my GMT Master II I banged it into my wife’s diamond ring. It left a nice gouge. My AD suggested not to have it polished by Rolex and I’m glad I didn’t. It’s still a Rolex GMT Master II, but now even more unique.

Hulk owner as well. It's my favorite watch of all-time. I've had it for a little over two years. No big dings yet, but, I'm in the same headspace. Rolex tool watches are meant to be worn and enjoyed. Scratches are part of the history of enjoying the watch. Now if Rolex would only make a steel blue sub (dial and bezel).... my world would be complete.
