Warner Brothers Entertainment 1942 film Yankee Doodle Dandy, with James Cagney and Joan Leslie. I uploaded this for others to enjoy it as much as I have.
My mother's name was MARY also and she lived to the ripe old age of 105 years she died in 2015 and it's now 2024 and I miss her and think of her every day I miss the stories she told me of her childhood and school days growing up on the Shetland Isles and Orkney isles it's a grand old name MARY 😢 😢
It was mums name and my sisters name, I miss them so much, God bless them and keep them in his loving arms thank you lord jesus christ for giving me a lovely mum and big sister I hope that I will be with them soon. 🕯⚘🌹🕯
I watched ‘ Yankee Doodle Dandy’ during Lockdown. It’s a really brilliant film. I had never heard of George Cohan before but he was a genius songwriter. ‘ Give my regards to Broadway’ and ‘ Yankee Doodle Dandy are fantastic. I discovered Richard Rodgers ( to me the greatest songwriter of all time) coaxed George Cohan out of retirement c 1936 to appear in an early Rodgers musical called ‘ That’ll be right’ I think and it contains the song’ Have you met Miss Jones’ !
This is a cool old song. It comes out in the 1982 movie " Tootsie" . Love it. I can't believe this song is that old 1905. They don't make them like that anymore..
Mary's a Grand Old Name George M. Cohan My mother's name was Mary She was so good and true Because her name was Mary She called me Mary, too She wasn't gay or airy But plain as she could be I hate to meet a fairy Who calls herself Marie For it is Mary, Mary Plain as any name can be But with propriety, society will say Marie But it was Mary, Mary Long before the fashions came And there is something there that sounds so square It's a grand old name Now, when her name is Mary There is no falseness there When to Marie she'll vary She'll surely bleach her hair Though Mary's ordinary Marie is fair to see Don't ever fear sweet Mary Beware of sweet Marie For it is Mary, Mary Plain as any name can be But with propriety, society will say Marie But it was Mary, Mary Long before the fashions came And there is something there that sounds so square It's a grand old name
My dear wife Mary passed away 6 months ago, July, 2018. She was so wonderful. Everyone's best friend, mine too. We were married 52 years, all were unforgettable.
I didn't live back in the day...but it must have been like a dream! Yes I know, the great depression and WW2..but people were so different! Kind, gentle, caring and tough when they had to be! Imagine knocking this country back then? Even Hollywood was super patriotic! Say something negative about America back then...you'd be missing a few teeth! Those people really were THE GREATEST GENERATION! You'll never see this type of parotism again iam afraid. Much respect to those amazing folks who defined our 20th.century!
The country is different than it was in 1942. The blend of subdued romance and up front patriotism would seem hokey today. Besides, where would you get another James Cagney? He's the whole movie!
Eighty years ago my mother used to sing me this song. I was just 5. I remembered the music and sometimes played it on the piano but didn't recall all of the words. I's also my wife's name; plain as any name can be. But beautifully simple.
James Cagney and Joan Leslie are from an era we will never see again THEY. HAD DIGNITY COURAGE AND TALENT MAY THEY R.I.P.
Both with such talent and Joan Leslie's beauty wishes I could go back in time
Agreed! This song was on my mind and super happy I found it!

Joan's version is the most beautiful.
This song was written when being square was a good thing.
I had no idea it ever had a good meaning, what was that?

I want to name my daughter Mary. Then I can sing this to her when she's a baby.
And her sons can sing it to their descendants.

I saw a different movie where Joan Leslie did fine, funny impressions of James Cagney and Ida Lupino. She should've done more comedies.
Thank you, that hit the spot.
What a guy you have too see is interview he didn’t realise he was sich a great fella so sad

Joan Leslie was a baby in her time, James was just extraordinary!
