Abandoned Desert Motel

- Poking around an old abandoned motel and/or apartment complex at a lonely desert crossroads on a BLISTERINGLY hot day in July, when temperatures were well over 100 degrees! I can't imagine what it would be like to live in a settlement like this, when it's so unbearably hot 3 months of the year, without a single river, lake or swimming pool to cool off in! These people must have been HARD CORE....but apparently they finally had enough, and abandoned their former home in search of greener, cooler pastures.
I didn't fully develop an idea of what possibly happened here until later, but here's what I think:
The kid who lived here and had all the weightlifting equipment was an aspiring football star. His family was so poor that they couldn't afford to live in town, and had to stay way out here where the dad and mom ran a small motel and gift shop, barely eking out a hardscrabble living.
Meanwhile, the kid had to travel ten miles each way to school each day in Boron, which made it kind of tough to have a social life....so he spent all his time lifting weights, building himself up for the Varsity football team tryouts. He had his eye on the beautiful daughter of the boss man at the local boron mine, but there was no way in hell her daddy would ever let his princess date some poor slob living in a run-down motel by the railroad tracks way out in the boondocks...so his love was unrequited, even though she always smiled at him when they passed each other in the halls at school.
But they ended up being assigned to the same History class project, and got to know each other better...and eventually started talking about their hopes and dreams. Neither of them wanted to spend the rest of their lives in this dusty desert town -- they wanted to go west, to the coast, where she could break into the movies and he could play for the Chargers, and on their days off they'd swim in the ocean and listen to the seagulls.
Finally, the fall before his Junior year the kid made the football team -- and he was so good, they made him the star quarterback! Now all of a sudden ALL the girls at school wanted to talk to him, but he still held out for the boron mine boss's daughter...and he finally worked up the courage to ask her to the homecoming dance. She said yes....but her daddy said no! Until finally, at the big homecoming football game against the Bobcats' longtime rivals, the kid scored seven touchdowns, winning the game for the first time in 20 years!!!
As his teammates showered the kid in Gatorade after the game, the boron mine boss came over and shook his hand: "Son, I'd be honored for you to take my daughter to the dance!" He even handed the kid the keys to his prize Corvette, so that he could drive to the dance in style.
The kid was so stoked -- his life had turned around! At the dance, he and his date were voted Homecoming King and Queen, and everyone wanted to come up and shake his hand/slap him on the back. He was now the most popular kid in school, and at the afterparty down at the local dry lake bed all the other kids gave him all the beer and Fireball he could drink. After awhile the mine boss's daughter whispered in his ear that they should go someplace less crowded, so they slipped away, got in daddy's Vette, and headed out to the local Lovers' Lane. Alas, all the booze, adulation and adrenaline of the day caught up with Johnny Quarterback...and he lost control of the Vette going around a curve. The Vette smashed into an embankment, and the two kids were both instantly killed!
When news got out, the boss man was devastated: "I knew I never should have let my princess go with that no-good white trash hick!" His anger and despair were such that he pulled some strings with local county officials, and had the dead kid's family's motel shut down for code violations, so that they were driven out of the area, never to return.
Ever since then, the motel has just sat there at the side of the highway, deserted and haunted with sad memories. But they say that when the westbound trains pass through, you can see the ghosts of a buff young quarterback and his beautiful virginal girlfriend running alongside it until they jump on the back, hitching a ride toward the coast...and freedom.

Wonderhussy...I know it's been nearly 3 years since you posted this and you probably won't see this but you have a brilliant, fertile imagination and could have a career being a screen writer or a true crime novelist. Love all your videos. Before I discovered you, I never knew the desert was so rich in history and lore. Stay safe and keep up the great videos.
I'm glad I watched the entire video, because before you said you were in Boron, CA, I knew you were at Highway 58/Highway 395. I worked 34-years at Edwards AFB. In the 1960's the Rocket Lab ran 24/7 and Boron was the closest place to live. It's an armpit. I lived in Lancaster, slightly less than an armpit.
I find your videos very educational. Have you thought about having a professor use your videos as part of their curriculum?
+Mach 1 LOL if any Professor wants use my videos they are certainly welcome! But half of the information is probably wrong... I do what I can with Wikipedia but some of these places don't exactly have Wikipedia listings LOL
Mach 1 She tell’s a story in most of her vid’s , but this time she put a lot into it ...maybe it was the heat…..:-]
Lancaster is little Tijuana now. Ganged out.
@@Wonderhussy joooo
Ooooooooooooooooooo

Wow, another desert town bites the dust and waited for you to find it! Oh, and the Bear story, I read about that a few years back and pulled out my son's old books. Well, all of them have the "a" in the spelling, I think we never really looked closely and pronounced it w/o the "a".
+Deb mitchell same here, I actually do remember noticing it as a child though because I was a weird bookish kid
Sarah, You have a well ferilized and watered brain. Your visionary stories are erudite and probable. I'm no surprised, having read a lot on your blog pages! So glad you got your story back... missed them

Ah! Beautiful downtown Kramer Junction, thanks for braving the heat. Nice story Sarah.

you rock girl.
+michael adams thank you! Glad you appreciate what I do :-)
Your explorations are so entertaining! Thank You!
+Joanna Miller Corley glad you enjoy!!
The Boron Bobcats is indeed the local high school football team... score!
The term "record album" dates from the 78 era, when each record could only hold about 3 minutes of program on a side. So for symphonies and the like, multiple records had to be stored in an album, the term borrowed from "photograph album". In the LP era, the term stuck even for a single record in a jacket.
WH, you are becoming the 21st century Bukowski!
+stfrsc oh wow!! truly interesting tidbit...thanks!!
Another great 👍 video Hussy do hope there's many more but work must come first love ❤️ the story

+Jim Brawski there is lots of fun stuff to explore here for sure
Really enjoyed your little story about the football kid. You should do more of them! ;)
+Jim Marquand LOL I plan to :-)
I'm not sure but listening to your version of "what happened" while watching the train pass was extremely satisfying :) :) :)
That was a snake skeleton carcass!. I have to tell yah; I am so fascinated by the dessert more than any city life style!. The wide open range with nothing but flatness just seems so cool to me!.
Robbie B. I'm kinda a desert fan myself but really I'll take any type of nature I can get; the desert, the beach, the mountains, a forest, I don't care but I live in Texas & everything is either private property or state parks that you have to pay to get into & it they don't really feel like nature with their paved roads, big plastic covered maps with flyers that tell you about the plants, & handrails on the footpaths.. living in a city has its advantages for sure but not getting any real nature can get depressing. And my definition of nature is an outdoor place where you can go build a fire and shoot guns for free without anybody bothering you.
To: Daniel Fultz: That was one hell of a refreshing post to read from another person's mental status& mind!. and It is an honor to read someone else thoughts that do compare to my type of thinking!. and I am glad to have met you, Daniel, it is a pleasure!.
Robbie-- everything was great until he had to add "shoot guns for free".
I am not against guns, not an extreme either way... I was in the military and my family hunted and used what we hunted all through the 70's and 80's... but I can't stand when I get out in nature, real nature, and of course I have to hear gun shots. Just HAVE to. Can't just be birds, or just imagine... NOTHING! No noise made by people at all.
Have the guns ready to go. I'm all for it. Also, if they haver to target practice, do it where you're actually NOT in the wilderness but somewhere outside town where it's allowed, and then for pete's sake pick up all the trash and leftover cases that typically show after those so-called "nature lovers" do their shooting for free.
Then get out where there's nothing actually produced by people. No buildings, no sounds, nothing but the stuff you need to survive, and then keep it quiet. Then check out what runs along and flies by.
Now THAT's the definition of nature.
"WOW" (abbeykroeter) I do so agree with your comment, Damn this world needs a lot more people like you in it!!. "DITTO~TO THIS POST"!.
+Robbie B. A lot of people bag on the desert but I think it's a wonderful place!
I liked your story at the end.You have a great Imagination. I wouldn't get bored traveling with you.
+Richie Diamond thank you! Glad you enjoyed
love your stories Wonder Hussy ... your the BEST ... much love and peace to you
+august van suchtelen glad you enjoyed LOL
Love all your Videos .. long time subscriber .. and always share your videos with friends and family on social medial as well ..
Awesome story at the end! I drive by that place twice a year on our way to camp at Lake Isabella and always wanted to explore the place.
+Emily Criss LOL well now you know:-)
WONDERHUSSY WHY....NOOOOO, right down the street when you see that huge white ball on top of a building a the Boron abandoned prison, Look it up and go, you will be so happy you did, it's an entire town abandoned with track homes and dozens and dozens of buildings PLEASE GO AND MAKE A VIDEO PLZZZZZZ
+Greg Austin I have been there a few times but the Wikipedia site says the federal government is actively Prosecuting trespassers so I feel like posting a video on the internet showing that I was there would not be a good idea
Wonder Hussy I've been there many many times and no trouble but I'm so glad you made the hotel video, LOVED IT
Another great video. Drove thru that area hundreds of times just to fuel up on my way to or from Fort Irwin. Surprised the place was intact. No real heavy damage by vandals or, tweakers. Never payed attention to that abandoned motel, now I know. Like a lot of things in that area, things come and mostly go. Wonder who's property was in there. valuable stuff. Interesting story you told in the end. Unusual theory. Stay safe and thanks for sharing your travels.
+Mark Taniguchi glad you enjoyed!
Love the story, well told.
Thanks for posting good videos.
+A Green glad you are enjoying!!
Somebody needs to rescue those old R.C.A. RECORDS, and THOSE ARE FROM THE 40'S AND 50'S ERA!. AND THEN THOSE OLD 45'S MINI RECORDS WERE FROM THE 70'S ERA, AND LOVED THOSE OLD SODA AND BEER CANS, THERE WAS An OLD 7~UP CAN AT THE VERY BOTTOM! That old stuff was still in great condition so sad to just see it being left there for some idiot ass wipe that will come along and break all that stuff up in time!.
Definitely. All that stuff can fetch some nice cash.
You have a great taste in old antiques just like I do. I would love to Have them in my little collection of goodies!.~NYC2NV!.=))
+Robbie B. Yeah those old records were really neat
+NYC2NV too bad it wasn't mine to take
That is the truth. Good for you. That reflects your inner beauty.
Hey Wonder Hussy! Love your videos.
greetings from Norway
+Drack 1400 glad you enjoyed! I have been to Norway... I took the hurtigruten cruise up to the Artic Circle, it was wonderful!
You're the best! love you :) you make my day!!

+Pete Nelson glad you enjoyed!
Wonder Hussy always enjoyable
Love ya!!! and your stories LOL
Wow you are awesome! Such a great vivid imagination love it!!
+Teddy A. glad you enjoyed lol
Def one of your "slower" stops. Lookin' forward to my High Sierras fishing trip.
I asked my buddies to stop along 395 so we could go exploring some mines/ghost towns.
Lookin forward to the first trip reports in the new ride)))
+Dr. Chem there is so much amazing stuff along the 395, I can't wait to go up that way and shoot some videos
Thanks for sharing this! And that end narration? Was awesome. Who are you really??? :-)
+below absolute zero I'm glad you enjoyed it LOL... I wasn't sure about posting it for very people would think I am totally insane. But I'm just a regular gal with an overactive imagination
the stories are great :-) although i'm pretty certain they are all based on 1950s and 60 pop songs :-) (with respect) xx keep it up WH
So many lonely and abandoned places out in the desert. Kind of amazing considering how crowded places like Las Vegas and
Los Angeles are in comparison. I remember the heat and couldn't get acclimated. Quite an improv story you thought up!
+Jack Lisiecki glad you enjoyed!
Wow I love that cautionary tale!
Great story, great imagination! 105 - heck it looked like you didn't even break a sweat. I could not live in that persistent heat!
+Gully Foyle OMG I had raging swamp ass... It was hot
Was that a rare Wonder Hussy doll? - Busch is your fave, right? - Those old 78 records are worth bucks! - Steps leading to nothing yet construction materials (wood and blocks) nearby. That project never got completed. - I love your Berenstain / Hillary ramble. - I didn't see any gloves, little missy. 1 demerit! (Although you are nicely color co-ordinated.) -
Excellent job combining the story with the train. Nicely done.
+NYC2NV I know, I didn't have the gloves with me... I have been a whirlwind of non-stop action and haven't had time to properly load my car with the essentials
You get a pass this time. But you're looking for a spanking.
I love that story! Another "death of the American dream" tale. Rock on!
+Andrew Pettola all these abandoned places just make me think horrible things happened LOL
Awesome story!!!!
Wow. I really love how you narrate the lives of the previous occupants. You should write a series of books.
+HERMOSABEACHGUY glad you are enjoying :-)
Love it, your story wins hands down. (-: Have to be tough kids to play football in that environment.
+Jake0007 Yeah talk about heat exhaustion!
Great story at the end I loved it
+Marty Records glad you enjoyed!
yes, I'm sure that's exactly what happened. keep up the good work, love the videos.
+easychachnotsofast LOL glad you are enjoying :-)

+Michael Hutton thanks! Glad you enjoyed LOL
your welcome, I sure did it was awesome
You should be a fictional writer, you have a fantastic imagination!
+Balding Ogre lol thanks!!!
Boy finding an old 78rpm record collection there well I would have grabbed those in a second. They go for big bucks now
because of collectors. They probably got trashed when this place got bulldozed in 2019. This is Kramer Junction,CA. and
where a totally awesome antique store is across the street. Love your fairytale story at the end. Great imagination WH!
Hey girl - Another great vid - you have the canning ability to put a magnifying glass on lives in places that once were vibrant. Now devoid of life and color but exist only in the travelers imagination who are able and willing to share a possible story to lives "Once Upon A Time". Merci beaucoup.
+MARTHA CAREY glad you enjoyed!!
Fascinating stuff. Totally hooked. -Old books, gnarly bathrooms, flip-flopping around rattlesnake scorpion infested scrub brush? I Can't look away for fear of missing what amazing sight may lay around the next corner. Great commentary. Very watchable. 97 Thumbs Up!
+Jd Herman glad you enjoyed!
I absolutely love your vivid imagination.
Loved that antique sewing machine! The conspiracy is called the mandela effect, it has to do with alternate realities/timelines. Pretty interesting stuff!
+539 Productions interesting stuff for sure
HAHahaha...!.. You crack me up Sarah:; with your imagination, speculations, vocabulary & humor. Always get a kick out of exploring with you. Thanks so much. (btw, I think the guys in the photo were wearing one of the national or local veterans organizations outfit, not sailor outfits.) hahaha... You need to go back & make the caretaker an offer on those old 78 albums. =Big Bucks Girl..$$$! cool. have fun & be safe.
+N.A. Annon wow, I bet they are worth some money cuz they were in such perfect condition
I'm Like you, leave it for someone else to enjoy. However, Some things Should be Rescued.
You are such a cutie. Maintaining a young girl enthusiasm at a mature age. Love listening to your delivery and narration.❤️👍
It feels like we're right there with u 😀🕶 minus the heat!
LMAO~Minus the heat!!.
Teresa Clift I feel the same way!!
+Teresa Clift be glad you didn't have to feel that heat LOL
+Vicki Paczesny glad you enjoy!
+Robbie B. Yeah that heat was brutal
Brhahhaha the stories you come up with are amazing! Lol
Great story
Lord, your stories....love em.
+Markus Perry lol....thanks!
i graduated from boron high in 1964. i worked at the old truckstop that was once where the pilot is now located. i hope to get back to california someday and explore places like you visit.
+John Meadows no way!!!! awesome!
Loved the story..great imagination.
Udon Nomi - That's what mushrooms do for ya.
save some of those shrooms for the rest of us.
+Udon Nomi glad you enjoyed!
+michael adams LOL would you believe I was Stone Cold Sober? Imagine the stories I would make up if I was shrooming though
+Sky Miller I will have to start making videos on mushrooms.... Could be interesting
You should do some follow ups on some of these older adventures!
Ha Ha , good story. Always enjoy your videos. Hope some day you go over to Arizona and check out the ghost towns on route 60 between Wickenburg and Quartzite. And along the freeways (8 & 10) between Cal and West Phoenix. Lots of old towns that have no one there any more.
+Billy Badbutt I definitely plan to go down that way this fall or winter
Great opening music..
Another Great woven tale...I personally think they hopped on a passing train to get to an oasis to cool off :-) When they got there they said the heck to that hot, dry, desolate place...we are staying here!
+J Vatell I hope you're right!
A-Plus for this one. Love your stuff. You are likely very close to the truth when you spin these yarns about the people who lived in these places. If you came to Oregon I could show you an eight thousand year old stone village with it's own little lake. Or the solar rock carving I found on the Southern Oregon coast. Like you, I'm always off finding old, and odd stuff. Keep it up, I am so enjoying your footage.
+Peter Johnson 8000 years?!?!?! wow!
hahaha! I freaking love you! That was awesome!
100 degrees here in Pa. your video goes good with it. Thumbs up sweety
+George wow 100 in PA?? I thought I had it bad out here...
Its been so hot for a week here cant go out. it all breaks on monday night
The theory you are talking about with the Bears is called "The Mandella affect".
ahhhhh thanks!
interesting thanks for exploring for us
Great Story! Sad Ending!
Beautifully told story..Kind of looks like company housing to me. Airforce? Boron? Solar plant? Txmission line construction?.I loved Boron it has a really interesting aviation history-museum.
lol great story teller!!
+Donna Mullins glad you enjoyed LOL
That medical list on the cart, and some of the strange room arrangements, make me wonder if the "motel" could have been an extended care nursing home for old folks. Might account for the boxes of mass market paperbacks, sentimental child-related nicknacks and the veteran photograph. Must have been trailers where the steps and sidewalk were.
That was a great story.
+Craig Edgemon lol thanks!
Your in My area. Your at Dar's Motel across the street is Dar's Museum and the Astro Burger. Hope you eat there the food is pretty good. Pretty much everything is owned by the Dar family in Kramer Jct. Boron is six miles down HWY 58 going to Bakersfield. I live there. a lot of abandoned homes. in Boron..
+Thomas Fruge wow cool! Thanks for the background info... Too bad that restaurant burned down. I'll try the Astro Burger next time I'm passing through
nice yarn, bet all the facts are right there~
I know a lady that lives out in the middle of the desert near here. She lives in an old motor home that has no electricity or water. I drove 250 miles from my house to donate 2 wind generators and a better antenna for her ham radio. I can't imagine living in those conditions.
+loach392 oh wow!! That lady sounds really hardcore... I would probably really like her
i just love seeing things through you camera.
+Milo Walker glad you are enjoying!
Always do Hun
WH, I am glad you seem to be happier. I have literally driven through that intersection hundreds of times. I never noticed the hotel and never ate at the Astro Burger. In fact, I have been given a tour of the Boron mine all the way to the bottom. The tour was given by an English Engineer who ended up running the place. If you are interested in mining operations you can take a tour, just contact their visitor center, though, they probably won't take you into the mine itself. In fact, if you ever want a complete tour of an operating mine, I could get you one, even on a day when they blow up a mountain (they do it by little parts). Also, the boron mine is owned by Rio Tinto which was an Australian company that I believe the Chinese now own. They refer to Borax as "white gold" because of it's value by the pound. And no, I never worked in mining but on occasion I worked with geologists. I make the offer because I know you will do as your told on site and be respectful and NO you cannot wear flip flops in an active mining operation.
+John Carpenter well I would love to tour a mind someday! It's funny you mentioned Rio Tinto, I was just on their website for some reason looking at all their operations
WH, I don't about touring a mind, that sounds painful; but, I sent you an e-mail about touring a mine.
What an imagination! I love it.
+eric norquist glad you enjoyed!!
Oh yes that own the antique store across the street, nice to see old vlogs of that place ,now that is gone, one of the boys in the picture is dead now , and the man in the green coat owns that stuff, probably good thing they did not catch you, but now it’s good to see , thanks BigAl California.
Don't know how you handle the heat, if it's 85 in Hawaii we are way to hot, and that's with trade winds! stay cool, love your stories...
+Cherie Grant Johnson OMG I know, I have a good friend who lives in Hawaii and he doesn't even have a thermostat in his house LOL. You guys are lucky, you live in Paradise
thank you sweetie, God bless you, you lead a very exciting life, I'm an old boring Aunty in Hawaii, in Hawaii we call everyone older than us Aunty or Uncle, it's nice as you don't have to remember anyones names lol
..... Like your smile...... Love your style.....Book a room and stay a while......!!
Yea I'm always looking for some poison... Love your vids!
I loved your closing summary it put an even more entertaining spin on an already enjoyable video
+Fred Smith glad you enjoy it!
Wonder Hussy Thank you dear I'm always looking forward to your next video, and thanks for entertaining me through some rough times.
Yeah that's on the 395 & the 58 right? They call it 4 corners or Kramers Junction. I live kinda close to there.
I think you went to the Sherlock Holmes School of Deductive Reasoning Hussy. Your backstories kick ass.
+Ricky Aldridge lol I got my Ph.D there
It wasn't long ago that there were a few cars out in front of those back units. Every time I drive by I slow down and look down that drive to see if anyone was living there. And of course wonder what it would take to restore.
+Ken Harrison I don't know, I mean it has some potential but it's not that far from Barstow so it would be hard to get travelers to stay there instead of just going into town
Been through Four Corners many times but never noticed the motel. I reckon because it is on the North side of RR tracks and I've only been East-Westbound & Southbound.
Nice vid! Thanks WH!
+John Lawrence yeah, weirdly I have passed through that literally dozens of times and never noticed it either until that day
