Frost Defoliates Black Walnuts in one morning!

  • This may be a common occurrence and I've merely never observed it before. Our Black Walnut trees (Juglans nigra) began dropping their leaves one morning after the first or second very hard frost of the season. It was a perfectly clear still morning with bright sun and relatively little wind. So the sound of the leaves falling like rain caught my attention from the house. By noon the entire tops of both trees were completely defoliated with a few leaves snagged in the branches and a few nuts still hanging from the trees. I'd be interested to hear some comments from other folks about how common this phenomena is with Black Walnuts.
Honestly they aren't my favorite tree, and I wouldn't have chosen them for my backyard, but we are short of nice trees here near the house, so we are unwilling to cut them down.

Our maple and alders have been shedding leaves since August, due to our extra hot summer. I have never seen anything like this leaf shed in a matter of half a day. Thank you Tim for capturing it on film.

The funny thing is, it happened so fast I was wondering if it has happened in the past and I just never noticed those years.

Like a rain of leaves. I've never had ours shed in one day. Takes a week. We had zero walnuts north of Toronto this year as too darn hot all Summer for germination

    Never seen that either.

I was about to ask if that happens every year but you answered that, I have never seen a tree do that before.

Never seen that effect on a walnut. Ginkgo and Pseudolarix will drop all leaves in one morning here. Around here walnuts are one of the first trees to drop leaves each year, with most leaves already gone by the first hard freeze.

In my personal opinion the tree is feeling threatened by the cold and shedding the nuts and protecting them with the leaves so the nuts can grow to produce a new tree just in case the mother tree dies, isn't nature great.
