There truly is no animated show out there quite like My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It's mix of sincerity, cuteness, comedy and character has struck a chord with millions the world over. Does that mean it's theatrical spin-off film balances the same strengths?
It's an interesting film for sure - so interesting, that there was no way to give it proper treatment in just one video. Fans of the show, rejoice: there's 44 mins of Cartoon Karma goodness on your favourite cartoon equines. It's like two full episodes of the show!
Welcome to Cartoon Karma, where I, Ghost Mike, delve into anything and everything potentially wrong, and right, with a chosen piece of animation. Any animation covered here will be treated fairly.
This isn't to be taken too seriously, folks. It's just a comedic, good-humoured way of looking at all our favourite animated series, shorts and films. Inspired by CinemaSins and PokéSins.

I know this is something you can only appreciate looking back right now, but the brutality of the movies locations, as well as the juxtaposition that the candy-colored main characters provide, really played well into the TV shows 8th season. Like you said, the writers seemingly created Klugetown because they were passionate about the location rather than to sell toys; who would have guesses that this passion would tie directly into exploring prejudice and globalism across 26 episodes?
Not an unfair point, though I have... mixed feelings regarding how the show handled those themes in Season 8. Like, really mixed feelings. Though the scale of the ponies’ journey as well as the visual juxtaposition of them against these locations beyond Equestria still does wonders.
A nice surprise! Two-parters are always interesting!
Heh, the CGI on the airships was pretty much the main thing fans complained about when the early trailers appeared. The animation style was broadly positively received as far as the 2D went, but the CGI stuff is still divisive.
15:20 I think it's nothing special, just a comment on the shapelessness of the uniforms making it hard to tell male from female body shapes. Mind, since we'd never seen this species before, I don't quite see the point.
Not going to go through this point by point or it would take ages, but the Muffins/Derpy point interested me particularly. Feelings about her are definitely fannish in a way they aren't with most other characters. Even the reasons why most fans (including me) still call her "Derpy" when Minuette has long since ceased to be called "Colgate" are heavily bound up with fandom history and culture.
As for the songs? I'd pick "Time to be Awesome" as best _song_ too, but in context, with visuals, give me "Open Up Your Eyes" from later on every time.
Well, how good can your CGI be on a $8 million budget, when you have 2D animation this expansive? See also: almost every modern anime.
I’m fully aware of Derpy’s history, and I’ve even come to be fond of the mare myself. It’s more that anything I’d say on her would sound fake compared to someone who’d lived through her popularity proper. The Muffins joke was more a thing about me considering the Canon version that but the Fandom version Derpy, only in name. I still name-dropped Derpy so people knew what I was talking about.
You’ll notice I said ‘Time To Be Awesome’ was the most fun song and the most rewatchable, but not the best. Open Up Your Eyes would be that. But a lot of that is context with the visuals and scene. Certainly for audio-only, I’d jump to Time To Be Awesome. Again, the most fun, and probably the highlight of the most fun sequence of the film.
You know more about animation as a business than 99% plus of the MLP fandom, though. Most of us really don't have a clue about budgets, pro-level cinematography and the like. Actually, when the film was first announced there was quite a strong group who were sad that it wasn't going to be done in Flash. (Many fans had already seen Equestria Girls movies on the big screen, so knew the limitations, but still hankered after what we were used to.)
Yeah, that's my point, really. I think the whole Derpy thing is inevitably a bigger deal for those who've lived through it. I joined a little after the initial "Derpygate" in mid-S2, so don't have personal experience of that whole palaver. However, I vividly remember the uncertainty over her future during S3 and the explosion of joy when she returned in mid-S4 and then talked in "Slice of Life". Something I like to say occasionally is: Muffins is Hasbro's, but Derpy is _ours_ .
Also, here's Daniel Ingram confirming that "Got the Beat" was indeed a last-minute inclusion. twitter.com/dannyimusic/status/916018811958050816
I'm the friend that you need is the best non villain song, fight me.
Fair enough. To me, it's just a song that calls too much attention to its deficiencies, is all.
@@CartoonKarma I was kidding, it's cool lol
Cool a mlp the movie that's what your doing I seen Mlpshy FIM already made something like that though.
Do you mean LittleshyFiM? Yeah, that’s kind of his thing. He sticks to CinemaSins parody, though, so there’s plenty of room for a Cartoon Karma take on the movie too.
@@CartoonKarma yes that what I'm meant sorry I incorrect his name I'm starting to forget his name alot he starting to remind of you though.😕😁
If you say so. I like his content, watch most of it, but I wouldn’t draw many, if any, similarities between us.
I bet it will have more sins. Let the fandom fight me.
Cartoon Karma doesn't do sins. These are basically video essays, albeit fun, comedic ones, at this point in the channel's life. What little 'Sins' connection that existed in the early days, 3 years ago, has been gone for a long time now.
Oh boy your going rip into mlp movie 3 questions
1.why this movie why not ppg girls movie
2.why you not doing 1986 mlp movie
3.why this movie?
Crimson Stratosphere ...because I’m a FiM fan now? As for the 1986 film, it’s so awful it would neither be fun to watch nor make. Plus, little audience for it.
Also, no “ripping” on films here. Cartoon Karma, you know. All thoughtful stuff.
@@CartoonKarma ah good one well anyways good luck my friend.also what do you meant by ripping films not trying be mean to ppg girls movie i was only asking why not do cartoon karma on that one
“Ripping” implies negativity, is all. Not the word to apply here.
@@CartoonKarma sorry about that
Crimson Stratosphere You’re fine, my friend. Enjoy the video later!
