I'm a former Marine, so I have to defend my boy Tyler. What he was trying to say about the ASVAB is that it's an aptitude test, that's why he was saying it's about how you think, and applying that knowledge, so he wasn't saying you can't ever learn more, he was saying it exposes the process which is pretty fixed by 18. Also, as a 21 year old Marine, that guy is possibly a young CPL or a senior LCPL, leading other young men. His demeanor is spot on for a Marine and a leader, he's confident in his abilities, and didn't come off wrong to me in anyway. Nothing he said was boastful, it was all factual. Nothing like Maria's humble-brag dance she does at around 6:30 in the video. He also didn't offer excuses as soon as things didn't go his way like others. He did get a bit defensive which is why he ranked himself high when it was his turn, but that was only because 4 others before him shat all over him saying he was last place and not smart. Which he admitted in his aside, that he would place himself lower too. He is a CBRN specialist, which is Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear specialist, so he's right not anyone can do his job. Just like not everyone can make it past recruit training to even become a Marine.
I also thought the snide comment about placing no value in the military is an incredibly bad and elitist take, and practically everyone laughed and agreed with her. Just because somebody has enough passion to place others and the Republic above themselves doesn't mean they should be dismissed. The military is the greatest melting pot of all races, genders, and socio-economic backgrounds from all over the US and it's territories than any other institution. I bet in his short 3 years after HS, he's accomplished more meaningful things in his life than some in that room will in their entire lives. Just because somebody opts to serve their fellow Americans out of High School, as opposed to going to college shouldn't be automatically viewed as a bad choice, or that he couldn't get into the same colleges. Without people like Tyler willing to give up everything, none of us would even be here. He should rightfully be praised for his choice, ESPECIALLY in light that he belonged in that room with y'all and STILL opted to sacrifice it all for you and others like you laughing and looking down at him. We should all be proud of him, I am. Semper Fi Tyler!

As someone who studies to become a teacher, I've come in contact with a lot of IQ tests and reasonings of that. IQ tests are not correct. They don't give you a number to describe your whole intelligence. IQ tests test one aspect of intelligence at a certain time with certain questions. They give you reliable answers to this exact thing: One aspect at a time with those asked questions. There is a LOT more to intelligence than this one aspect though. We don't even know all the aspects yet simply because intelligence is such a complex thing.
Every test also has its own faults. So, add all of this together - IQ tests are not a super reliable source for your complete intelligence. You'd have to take a lot of them at different times and for different aspects, in my opinion, to make then more reliable.

You need to have a certain level of intelligence to be in the military because even the smallest mistake can get a lot of people killed, so they need people who are less likely to make mistakes in those positions. "A" is learning things by heart, memorizing them. It's what you do at school. And yes, you can get better at that. You need to be intelligent enough to learn things by heart but people with average intelligence can do this just fine (this is how Maria got her PHD).
"B" is "real" intelligence. The more intelligent you are, the faster you can interpret information, come to new conclusions, see patterns, and so on. I think Tyler meant "B" when he was talking about it not being possible to get better at "learning". Getting better at the speed and the way in which you interpret information is difficult to improve.
Many people like Maria, Shadeh (not sure about the spelling) and you, seem to think that learning information by heart and memorizing things (what you do in school) is a good indication of intelligence while in reality it's mostly just testing how good you can memorize information. There is definitely a correlation between intelligence and the ability to memorize things but you do not need extremely high intelligence for it.
That's also the reason why there are many people with masters and PHDs who aren't "very" intelligent. Unfortunately, these are also the people who confuse their ability to memorize information (and the university degree that comes with it) with real intelligence (like Maria). That said, I believe Tyler can easily get a bachelor or master's degree if he chooses to.

Neither is the overconfidence the Marines teach (If you can't be right, be confident). His best evidence was his ASVAB score, and, as someone who tutored folks for the asvab for months before I shipped to boot camp, I can tell you that is not an IQ test: I could raise someone's score 20 pts on average given just a few hours of tutoring on test taking skills.

My reason for honestly disliking all of you on the vid besides Tyler came with how everyone just pretended to not see what was happening right in front of them - you were all piling on this kid because he was the easiest target. Everyone could see that he articulated himself well, that he took the opinions of others well (even when you were all underestimating him he could still empathize with your perspective), I think EQ is bullshit but if you want a good example of someone being well developed in "EQ" then there it is. And yet all of you suddenly were experts in "EQ" and somehow he lacked more of it, despite no one being able to read the room and see what was happening - he was being pre-judged based on his profession and to some degree maybe his ethnicity. I feel like when the girl from Yale pointed that out about you and where you were placed you could have been honest and said, "I feel that's also what we're doing to Tyler as well on the other spectrum", Instead you either really were oblivious or you were too afraid to point out the subtle social "nice" bullying that was happening. In terms of spotting intelligent people, I believe that it is within the eyes. The way they wide open, to learn, to absorb as much information as possible - and yes, they tend to learn, and 'get it' really fast too. And the way they ask questions - to know more, and in-depth - 'The endless hunger for knowledge', I guess.
IMO, Ray and Sada are the two most intelligent people just by the look of it. However, Sada's condescending and arrogant attitude and her own political belief really hinder her potentials. I agree that it really is silly to attempt to rank a group’s intelligence based on a 5 minute discussion. But the reason why Tyler became the hero in the comments and Maria became the villain can be summarized by a point Sade made - that she doesn’t put value in the military. Many people, moreso college-educated milennials don’t value the military or military service, and by extension have preconceived notions about members of the armed forces. Perhaps this can be a learning experience and an opportunity to talk to more people like Tyler, intelligent, articulate young members of the armed forces and learn about their experiences, thoughts, journey, etc. The way the video came across, viewers perceived that Sade and Maria looked down on Tyler, so when Maria ended up with a lower IQ than Tyler it was as if the bullied scored a win over the schoolyard bully. They're also very careful not to admit to any mistakes they've made that may cast doubt on them or their judgment.
Ray's disingenuousness is further revealed when he AGAIN goes along with the group--here 'the group' being people who know Tyler isn't the idiot he was once portrayed to be--by saying, "Tyler's obviously very smart." Yet he's careful to skip around how he, like everyone else, portrayed Tyler as being the biggest idiot of the bunch.
Aside from the fact that the Finance Sector is populated almost entirely by psychopaths and narcissists, another insight to seeing past this t-shirt-wearing, 'humble guy' facade is Ray's December haul video from 2020, where he displays the fashion name brands he picked that month. For someone trying use their dress as another way of expressing their 'guileless, awe shucks'-nature, he sure seems happy to share with you how much disposable income he has in order to pay $100 for something that's only worth $5.
I could be wrong here. Ray may just be a nice guy who did good by making his way early in life, and wants others to know about it--as we all want to.
