New Orleans Apartment 1974 - I had the good fortune to have dinner in Club 33 when my brother worked as a ride operator on the Jungle Cruise. He was dating a waitress who worked in Club 33 and somehow our family ended up having dinner in the then mostly unknown restaurant. After dinner she showed us part of Walt’s unfinished apartment with it’s view of Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer’s Island, one of the most scenic views in the park with Mark Twain and Columbia tied up at their berths. The apartment was left as it was the day Walt died 8 years earlier, bare wood floor decking, some of the wood trim and finish carpentry done or seemingly underway when stopped, ladders and scaffolds around the entire area, just as a unfinished home under construction would look. If only I had my camera.
My grand parents had a club 33 membership for like 50 years and I have fond memories and even birthdays up there as a kid. Later when I became an adult they would let me use their membership to go on fancy dinners or lunches with those I was dating. Not cheap but at least you don't have to pay to get in the park. Very cool that you got to go enjoy it during better times versus state it's in now
My gf and I did the Walk in Walt's Footsteps tour about 10years ago, they stopped the tour not long after. It's really neat inside, like going back in time. Reminds me of my grandmothers house. We weren't allowed to take pictures in there, and it was mostly roped off as well to keep people from wandering and touching things, but the guide would take one picture of you in there if you wanted. Funny thing is when I tell people I've been in there they either don't believe I was in there, or don't believe the apartment even exists. I still have my pin with Walt's face on it from when we went.
I'm wondering whether you remember an odor of tobacco. I don't if it's just me, but I fly before the smell of a cigar in a small space. Seems like he might have taken up a pipe instead.
I worked at DL as a Fire Captain. Part of my duties was to inspect Walt’s apartment once a year. It is as you pictured it, a hidden Jem. My wife managed the Wester Region Logistics for Eastman Kodak. Kodak was a Club 33 member. We had many dinners in the club. At that time Club 33 dinner reservations included a free day in the Park. My wife still has the Club 33 card and Club 33 coat. Only 333 were made.
I have plenty of photos of me as a DL Firefighter, but no photos of Walt’s apartment, though i remember being in there. 😢I was allowed in with another cast member who was a manager. I was not allowed to take any pics. This was considered sacred ground.
One of my best memories of DL was the afternoon a friend and I were treated to a very detailed tour of the New Orleans space. Just the two of us and a very friendly cast member. We got to peek in every room (yes, even the missing toilet bathroom), the room used for printing posters, walk around the upstairs outdoor patio, and then just as it was turning dusk, be invited by the gallery staff to sit on the small deck and watch Fantasmic with one other couple while eating strawberry deserts. I will never forget that experience.
I have been to Disney World a number of times . It doesn’t matter how old you are it’s a magical experience! I have however never been able to visit Disneyland . It’s on my bucket list and I would love to see his apartment . It’s so cool he had one and guests were none the wiser . The man was a true visionary and what he created will live in for generations
If only Walt could be cloned so he could run Disneyland again. Alex, could you imagine being able to spend the summer in Walt's apartment and being able to walk around at night after hours. Fun... Thanks for posting this, towards the end I almost had a tear in my eye.
In sime sense, even Walt was careful in overspending too soon, that is, he moderated the expenses for what was practical at the time. Having a studio/one bedroom suite that was suitable for himself and Lillian at a moment’s notice, was a very smart idea. Even if, in his mind about a bigger apartment, i wonder if he was a bit overwhelmed by the impact Disneyland made on everybody. That indicates he wanted to be in careful control of public and investor scrutiny in those early days as to not apoear ostentatious with other investors’ loans. Conversely, if this story were told today, with different CEO’s, the first thing they would have built was the CEO’s executive mansion, and cut back on what the public got.
Perfection! I am so glad you added the apartment over Pirates. Many people don't know about it's true conception. I was glad I was able to walk thru it as the Disney Gallery.
Imagine LIVING in Disneyland. The park would seem so eerie and lonely after closing, and since a lot of it is built to look like a town village, it’s like roaming around in an abandoned town. I don’t know which would be worse: all the lights turned off with no one around, or the lights ON with no one around.
Having been a former cast member at Disneyland I can say it's not as eerie or spooky as it might seem. It's sort of like being in your own house when you get up in the middle of the night for a glass of water. It's calm, quiet, peaceful. The only thing you hear is the 5 freeway nearby.
@@AlextheHistorian I used to work for Six Flags over Georgia, and our park gets pretty creepy at night. Especially around the carousel hill, Gotham City, and Monster Mansion areas. I remember the Disney gallery above pirates quite fondly. There where even a ride car or two in there once in while. They also had it set up so you could book Dessert and watch fantastic. Great video, thanks.
Wow! Thanks for the insightful video, Alex! I visited the art gallery as a teenager and didn’t know the history well enough to appreciate it. But you’re right, running up those stairs always felt special. In 2016 I went on the Walking in Walt’s Footsteps tour and was able to see all the rooms in the Dream Suite. Along with people like the Beatles, Judy Garland and Muhammad Ali, Walt Disney was one of the most magical people of my childhood. I see him in this video and I get this intense warm and happy feeling... and I'm 63 years old. It's kind of like seeing your father who passed a long, long time ago. It was many years later before I got to go to that floor again at Club 33, where hanging out on the balcony after lunch was one of the most special moments ever!

Thanks so much for the research and great content 😀
Thanks Linda! Indeed, I used to guide the "Walk in Walt's Disneyland Footsteps" tour and that sometimes included a stop inside the apartment (on days of good weather).
I didn't know that Disneyland even had a place for Mr. Disney. I mean I practically grew up at Disneyland, I went there so much as I grew up. The last time I went there I was 15. I miss going there. Love from Marysville, California
"...available for viewing, at a hefty price." Well, yes. Walt's apartment was included in the Disneyland main street walking tour my wife and I took in November 2022. The cost? $360 for us both. This included cookies and soft drinks served on Walt's veranda adjoining the apartment at the conclusion of the tour. Photography in the apartment was forbidden except of subjects standing against one particular wall. A cast member photographer was present to take these photos.
Just so I’m clear . The cost was $360 plus the park entrance fee. I’m sure foolish question. Personally I feel DL costs have gone a bit much, last time I was there the new restaurant shopping area had just been built and California Adventure? I think I have that right, it was built over the parking lot that had been there from the beginning. I was raised on Disneyland we lived fairly close and went every summer for birthdays. With ticket book in hand we could run free meet back up with my parents a couple times a day get a long multi colored pencil with a eraser on top that was one of the Disney characters. I always chose Dumbo. I still have a few ticket books one even still has a E ticket in it. All the other A and B tickets. The E tickets were the best part how or why there is one left is amazing.
Very interesting! Always wanted to see what Walt's Apt looked like! Wish I had the money yo take the exclusive tour of it in person. Maybe one of these days. Thanks for the video.
What a great video! I love the story of the lamp.I have heard that a cast member who cleaned the apartment turned the lamp off and when she left after cleaning it the lamp came back on.She went up and turned it off and once again it came on.I truly believe his spirit burns bright and I love the idea of keeping the lamp on all the time.I love Disneyland and the history behind it.The last time I visited was for the Diamond celebration.I really want to visit the park again very soon
It was probably a park manager who saw the light was out and kept going in to turn it on. They check to make sure the lamp is never out, and they take quick action when it is not on.
He probably never imagined, a theme park would eventually own 95% of all entertainment. Disney owns ABC, Marvel, ESPN, Touchstone, Lucas Films, Pixar, Fox, Hulu, Nat Geo.
Sadly when I went this past year to Disney, the Walt tour wasn't available, but my boyfriend did give me the run down, as he had done it several times before. I went to Disney in October for my birthday, so it' was pretty tricked out for Halloween, and whenever I do go again, I'd love to go during Christmas. Disney in my head feels very 1950/60's Christmas, Bing Crosby and the likes. I know it'd probably be extremely hectic, as the 12th of October on a random Wednesday was lol.
I’ve done the ABD Backstage Magic tour twice. We got to go into the apartment. First time we got to take pictures. I actually sat next to the lamp table.

The architecture firm I worked for designed an apartment over an auto dealership and repair shop, for the owners. We labeled it "Office, Break Room, Worker Shower, and Meeting Room".
Once again Alex you had me captivated! I truly do appreciate your knowledge and ability to tell wonderful stories about Walt and Disneyland!!! :) Keep them coming.
My Dad helped build Disneyland and worked there for years so did all of my friends and even school teachers in the summer time. Photos that my Dad took are posted in an attraction called the Disneyland story. Including a photo of the Trumans .I was a bad kid at Disneyland when I was a kid in that I got in free and then jumped all of the lines with my friends .We would say to the people in line "I need to catch up with my friends because I was in the bathroom, can I go ahead of you please?" they would say "of course go ahead " or I would go in the exits and sneak ahead because I knew all the back ways to everything. My Sister in Law sold popcorn and ice cream on main street for year until she decided she wanted to join the real world and became a CHiP officer as one of the first women to do that.
Well done Sir, Fire Protection Contractor and very surprised to see exposed sprinkler pipe (could be in joist channel). Well, at least it put out the toaster fire, however, when that water comes out it is Black, smells like the sewer. Brought back memories, forgot about that Art Gallery up on the 2nd floor, bought many pieces there back in early 2000's.
The sprinkler plumbing is exposed in Walt's apartment because that upper floor [dimensionally] is built in 5/8ths scale. To make the apartment look bigger than it really is, Mrs. Disney insisted on raising the ceiling height, which required leaving the already installed sprinkler system exposed.
Thanks for this great video of Walt's apartment, and its history I remember when coronavirus first came to the US and then California and everything was getting shut down including the parks and I remember one time a news chopper cant remember which sorry, but they were flying over Disneyland and pointing to the apartment on main street and the lantern was left on I called my mom over to show her that it was still on, and I remember right away I don't know how long this dumb pandemic will last or how many will die, but that lamp is the hope for not only are country but for the whole world that one day this nightmare will be put behind us
I really loved your honesty to how it is…I have seen my parents 8mm film of my parents with the Disney’s. Now I need to find that film and check to see if the apartment is on it…LOL
Oh my goodness that bathroom took me right back to my childhood and I would go over to by great aunt/uncles house and use their bathroom. Same color scheme and all. Was not prepared lol

Thanks Linda! Indeed, I used to guide the "Walk in Walt's Disneyland Footsteps" tour and that sometimes included a stop inside the apartment (on days of good weather).
Mrs. Disney definitely had good tastes in Victorian Furniture and Room Decor. 🙂 ❤ 👍
I didn't know that Disneyland even had a place for Mr. Disney. I mean I practically grew up at Disneyland, I went there so much as I grew up. The last time I went there I was 15. I miss going there. Love from Marysville, California
Alex,
That was very tender and heart-warming.
*Thank you!*
I love it! If I could have an apartment there I would. I'm just sorry he didn't get to keep his fireman's pole.
That is because people are animals!’ No regard for others! Just a bunch of entitled spoiled losers
Alex, your videos are so incredibly well done it's like you have a whole team helping you.
Lol thanks! I wish I did have a team!
@@kathy6372 Right you are, the main street tour was $180 each, plus of course the price of admission.
Wow the end just made me cry a river 😢 love the history behind Disneyland as fellow Disney fan ❤
Nice job! What a special place. I had the opportunity once to clean up there when working in custodial, will never forget that.
Wow! Great featurette on Walt's private apartment!
Very interesting! Always wanted to see what Walt's Apt looked like! Wish I had the money yo take the exclusive tour of it in person. Maybe one of these days. Thanks for the video.
I did the walk in Walt's footsteps 4 yesrs ago loved it
What a great video!
I am so thrilled that his wife was from my area and they were married in my hometown, Lewiston Idaho, near my home. Wish I would have met them.
Wow! I learned something today!
Alex, as usual your videos are entertaining and very moving, I enjoy them immensely. Excellent work.
Thank you!
I really Enjoyed this Video. Thank You for Sharing 😊
He probably never imagined, a theme park would eventually own 95% of all entertainment. Disney owns ABC, Marvel, ESPN, Touchstone, Lucas Films, Pixar, Fox, Hulu, Nat Geo.
And Blackrock owns disney. I miss the days when companies were independent.
As well as Anehiem, and the Angles baseball team.
@@cameron9091 The Angles are owned by Arturo Moreno.
Great job as always. The ending was absolutely perfect.
Beautiful video. I wish I could visit there someday.
I love this story always have yet I never had a clue that his Mrs. Designed it all nor was I aware of the food and drink choices yummz. Tyvm for the love you pour into this channel be it Disney or ships just know I'm a proud subscriber of your content top notch quality
Thank you!
Wow what a lovely and informative video well done!
Hi, I never knew about that apt I usually went in on Main Street and honest I was not paid attention…. That was years ago and I just saw on your channel and got me so curious! And I watched I said to myself wow it’s nice to know about Walt Disney! He is a great man! Thank you for sharing this with us.
my ex gf loved going to Disneyland it was one of her favorite places to go this brings up good memories as we got to sit in the Disney caboose i loved seeing a smile on her face …when i moved to oregon she stayed in ca i still miss her even though its over
What a great man there are none like him today
Thank you Alex.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍 Very lovingly narrated.💝 excellently produced.🥇
Thanks!
There'll never be another one like him. Plenty of Walt Disney fans... but thankfully, not so many "Disney" fans.
Thank you for GOOD TRUTH.
Thanks!
Thanks for this great video of Walt's apartment, and its history I remember when coronavirus first came to the US and then California and everything was getting shut down including the parks and I remember one time a news chopper cant remember which sorry, but they were flying over Disneyland and pointing to the apartment on main street and the lantern was left on I called my mom over to show her that it was still on, and I remember right away I don't know how long this dumb pandemic will last or how many will die, but that lamp is the hope for not only are country but for the whole world that one day this nightmare will be put behind us
Thank you !
I really loved your honesty to how it is…I have seen my parents 8mm film of my parents with the Disney’s.
Now I need to find that film and check to see if the apartment is on it…LOL
Yay, Disney park content!
That is quite an overview. Didn’t know about a 2.nd apt but it makes sense 😊
How lovely. Thank you..
Loved the video as always of the Disney magic in your videos. Amazing video. Plz keep making more disney videos. ❤️
I will
Oh my goodness that bathroom took me right back to my childhood and I would go over to by great aunt/uncles house and use their bathroom. Same color scheme and all.
Was not prepared lol
I enjoyed this. Thank you 🙏🏽 😊
Once again, perfection. Many thanks!
Very well done video, and so interesting. Thanks.
Great job. And well told.
Thank you. I love secret apartments. Now if it had secret passageways, and tunnels throughout the park.
You never heard about all of what's under the park?
That would be some honour to see that
You need to wear special glasses and find all six hidden "Waltie" symbols scattered round the park to get the code to open the front door.
Beautiful captivating video!
