  • Here's a new product I was sent to try - it's a hydrophobic nano-coating you can apply yourself to give your motorcycle (or car, or boat or aeroplane!) that just washed, water beading finish. The theory is it makes it harder for dirt to stick thus keeping your pride and joy cleaner for longer...I've been giving it a try for the last couple of months, here's how I've got on....

    I gave up waxing the bike years ago when I twigged that the key was to stop the dirt sticking in the first place. Since then I've used cheap spray furniture polish with remarkably similar results, and effort, to the Hydrosilex. Only takes minutes to do the whole bike so not painful to redo if it does not last as long as nano stuff.

    these are defo not the only type of coating like this. there are loads, cheaper and by the looks of it work better, at least on initial application, i would imagine longevity too. tac systems moonlight and ADAMS CERAMIC SPRAY COATING very highly recommended with Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Wax being quite good too. plus the actually use genuine ceramics where as this seems to be a synthetic one. Don't get ripped off by these guys, your paying for something it is not.

    Hendlex do a good range of nano products that I've found good value, and perform very well. No affiliation with the company - there's a lot of bs in this area - the nano element of the product is normally silicon dioxide or silicon carbide. How effective they are depends, to a large extent, on surface preparation, so a spray on product may only give limited protection. The so called "professional" products that we have looked at use a 2 coat system that requires really exacting preparation and application and cost wise is exorbitant for what it is. We have researched many different surface coatings for non automotive industrial applications and had mixed results. The nano stuff does work well on skis though.

    Nano coating is not like rainx, no. Its meant to stay on the bike where as rainx would not last long. I've used many nano coats and ceramic coats and the nano coating doesn't last as long as people say. I paid £300 to have it professionally applied and it lasted a month or 2. And a little myth is that they stop scratches, even ceramic does not stop scratches. And this is not the only nano coating you can buy, even R&G do a version of it. Hope you have better luck than me with these products mate

      @@TheMissendenFlyer the company that charged that and applied it to my h2 are no longer around. Some of thier products were very good but the nano coat was not much cop. I've since had ceramics put on it and they are definitely harder and make the bike very easy to wash. Unfortunately still not strong enough to prevent scratches! I think the spray on one's like you used are good because it creates a nice layer between bike and crud so all the crap gets washed away very easily with a hose because it just runs off with the water

    Dear TMF,
    More "snake oil" than real science. It's like being back in the USA wild west with those cure-all potion sellers...
    As someone that has worked in the metals and plastics costing industry all my working life, I feel qualified to comment.
    It's easy to be drawn into the "nanoparticle, ceramic coating marketing hype. However, this just appears to be another weekly hydrophobic, water-soluble suspension, most likely a silicate or silane. They've been around for decades. Silicate is a really low-cost raw material, so paying a 100x multiple for fancy marketing just goes to show how gullible we can be.
    A bit of silicate in water-soluble wax, give it a fancy name, tell people it's "Nano-Particle Ceramic coating, then show them how well water beads off it....really !!!
    Nothing new or magic here, just pseudoscience.
    Much cheaper car wax or resin polish can't do this for a fraction of the price. I think lot's of your viewers have already figured this out.
    Love your videos though, keep them coming.

    • @richardcollins586
      @richardcollins586 Před 5 lety +1

      Tex Rex I’ve seen another video on applying ceramic coatings and the prep involved is a lot. Cleaning, decontamination, machine polishing, and then having the temperature and humidity just right, it’s a big undertaking. If I had a new car, I might give it a go, though for a bike I would just use a high quality paste wax.

    • @nspinicelli
      @nspinicelli Před 5 lety

      Hey Tex Rex, perhaps you could make a recommendation? Situation is, I just reserved a 2019 Bonneville T120 Diamond Edition, so it has chrome on it. I plan on riding the tits off of the thing, with a little bit of off-roading for camping and exploring. I want to apply something to make clean-up as easy as possible, resulting in a near show room finish quickly. What would you recommend? I'm hoping there's something I can apply that is safe for chrome/paint/plastic/rubber, will prevent rust, and make clean-up much easier.
      BY THE WAY!: You said "Much cheaper car was or resin polish CAN'T do this for a fraction of the price." I'm pretty sure you meant "CAN do this."

      What’s the difference between this and rainx?

    • @samsara3694
      @samsara3694 Před 5 lety

      @Mike Both types are 'genuine' ceramic coatings, it's simply a case of variation in product: one type is usually a two stage application and will provide longer lasting performance as well as greater protection against swirling, the other (like the demo'd product) designed for quick application and, depending on product, will give you 4-10 weeks hydrophobic protection, but without the additional protection against swirling. I have had Gtechniq CSL + EXO applied to my car, but I will use Gyeon Wetcoat (similar type of product as that shown) as an occasional top-up. For my bike, I've protected paint surfaces with EXO, the rest with ACF50.

    • @samsara3694
      @samsara3694 Před 5 lety

      @@gtjack9 Rainx is a hydrophillic coating for glass. Coatings for glass and wheels tend to have a hydrophillic molecular structure, as this causes the water to sheet off the surface quickly rather than produce 'beading' like hydrophobic coatings. Rather than water being repelled (phobic - fear), the surface attracts water (phillic - love). The idea is that you want the mass of water to sheet away from the surface rather than sit as beads on the glass. Similarly, the mass of water sheets away brake dust from your wheels.
      At the molecular level the difference is seen in the angularity of the molecule.
      Whist I don't know the product base for rainx, I expect its basic ingredients will be similar other nano coatings for glass. There will be variations in terms of ease of application and performance, though as a rule those with more 'resins' require even more careful application and provide better performance.

We still do not deserve it!!! ;) So, France was closest. During the checkout I could not select Germany in the drop down menu when it comes to the address. Went back to the UK Link, denied to be rerouted, and, here we go, on the UK page, there is a drop down menu with all (?) countries, even bloody Germany. GBP 7 for shipping, but, hey, if it works? Similar product to original Rainex, which i use on my visors and on windscreens of cars. Obviously generally too small a bottle to do a bike entirely. Seems decent product but for the person with the higher budget.

    I’ve got a street triple R which I love, but the paint work is matt back and as a result a real bugger to keep clean. Do you know if this can be used on matt paint without causing any effects?

    What's the point of this? your bike dries faster?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 5 lety +1

      Well easier drying is a side benefit - key thing is it makes it harder for dirt to stick to the surface, keeping your bike cleaner for longer...

    Thanks TMF. Interesting vid. You mention visor and glass treatment. Have you tried it out on visor or windscreen and if so, did it improve vision in the rain? Would be interested in a follow up sometime if not yet. (Hard to film through your visor on a ride though!!). If the channel ever tanks you’ll have a great career as a bike washer!!!

Could this be the miracle us OCD riders have been looking for?! I'm getting all tingly.

Either I am staying up too late at night, or you are posting your videos too early in the morning. I suspect the former. :) Thanks again.

    Poor old TMF, just showing us what hes been sent and the results he had and there is much mocking! From what I gather, in the comments the main difference between this and Mr Sheen/other coatings (regardless of the ceramic claims) is that it stays on after washing. Which can't be a bad thing.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 5 lety

      This doesn't replace ACF50, it just helps stop the dirt sticking so keeps your bike cleaner for longer - seems alright but if you look through the comments lots of people have said other similar stuff is available at a lesser price....so may be worth checking them out if they do the same thing...(no issue with Hydrosilex, just expensive)....

    I use another company's product; Dr. Beasley's here in the States which claims it lasts 2-3 years depending on maintenance. I'm very happy with their products. However, it is a whole black hole of marketing claims versus reality that people can be very territorial and 'internet experts' on so beware opening this can of worms as the comments no doubt have started to show (and will continue long after!). LOL. I am a geek about detailing my vehicles much like you are and have nano coated my cars/motorcycles with the same sort of attention and vigor you demonstrate (though I do not have a dryer/blower like you do) and find that paint protection is quite the hot topic people can be quite worked up over.
