What is a logic bomb?
A logic bomb is a type of cyber attack, used by attackers for malicious purposes.
The intentions can vary widely from damaging a company for personal revenge, to causing disruption in government organisations for political reasons.
So how does a logic bomb work?
A logic bomb is a set of instructions in a program that will deploy a virus when certain conditions are met. Lets look at some examples.
A IT worker is in dispute with their employer that's they suspect will result in them being fired unfairly and they're very upset about this. They create a logic bomb that will only go off if their account is deleted from the companies active directory which would happen if the were fired. If this condition is met the virus deployed will delete all files from all computers C drives that are connected to the companies local area network causing massive amount of damage to the company the employee feels treated them unfairly. If they aren't fired their account wont be deleted so the logic bomb will not go off.
Another example and this is a real world case is a software engineer who worked for siemens for over 10 years. He then went on to provide spreadsheet software to the company. What siemens didn't realise was that he had coded a logic bomb into one of the spreadsheets that would go off when certain was entered into the spreadsheet. When this was entered the spreadsheet would error and become unusable. The person who created the software would then be called out fix it charging them a huge support fee. This went on for over 2 years before the logic bob was discovered!
