He was a drug addict and alcoholic. It was just a matter of time. Poets and artists in general are often very sensitive and unable to fit into scheme and live their lives just like 99% of people. They do drugs and get addicted to alcohol to escape this sad, boring and pathetic reality. And eventually they die from overdose, suicide or in accidents.
