  • Smile was a Danish band from Esbjerg. They were founded in 1971 as a 9-piece big band orchestra in the vein of Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. However, they changed their sound in 1972 when they became a four-piece band as it's heard on their only full-length LP, released in 1973 via the small Danish label, Hørekiks. The sound on this album ranges from commercial pop rock and classic rock, as well as a few heavy psychedelic tracks with excellent psych guitars.

Today is May 5, 2024 and up to this moment had never heard about them. I lived in London from 88 to 96 and had never heard of them but now I´m their number 1 fan in the south of the Americas, more exactly in Brasília, Brazil. I´ve just downloaded to my top thousand mobile file to have it with me anywhere, anytime. Greetings from Brazil!!!!!!!!!!!!!"🤩🤩🤩🤩

Wow! That makes me so happy to read. I'm very happy to have the record in my collection as well. I actually got it back in November. I traded some of my stuff in Beat Bop Records in Copenhagen (Owned by Mercyful Fate guitarist Michael Denner). He had gotten a big collection in the shop from a guy who had just passed away. A lot of them Danish progressive rock. I had heard about Smile before, but only heard the track 'Popstar' which is uploaded earlier here on CZcams. I had no idea of how the rest sounded like. An older friend of mine (Denmark's biggest Black Sabbath collector) had told me that there was some nice heavy guitar on it and I was of course intrigued by that.
My wife is actually a Brazilian girl from Osasco in São Paulo. I've been there twice myself and can't wait to get back again.

Very esoteric find. As a record hunting teenager in Denmark in the 70's, I don't think I ever came across this album. Thanks for the listen.

We're so lucky to have the internet nowadays. It's so much easier to find the good stuff. However, I think that it's even cooler to find gold unexpected when digging the crates.

Actually these guys sound so much like The Band. The voices, drums, style, rock, guitars, and organ mix - you'd swear it was Rick, Robbie, Mickey, Dick, and Garth writing new stuff. These guys are fantastic. Thanks for posting this.

I've known about The Band for years without ever listening to them. I see them often in record stores, but never thought much of them. I will try and give The Band a listen.

@The-Danish-Record-Hunter i used to have the factory-produced cassette-tape copy of 'gasolin' -what a lemon' as well as a couple of LPs (or maybe just one -i cannot remember) by 'shu-b-dua' (with the bumble bee on the cover). my parents were the denmarkian people but they emigrated and i was born and raised in the canada and i was given the albums when visiting relatives in the '70s. and so i am quite surprised that i have not heard of 'smile' until just a few days ago.

@@The-Danish-Record-Hunter I've been finding quite a lot of little known psychedelic rock bands of the 1960s of late...so many hidden gems out there. Bands like Aerovons - World Of You, The West Coast Pop Art Band - Shifting Sands is glorious, Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine, Fever Tree - The Man Who Painted Pictures for are some examples. The Collectors - What Love Suite - a long one but brilliant, & some very obscure ones like Ipissimus - check out their version of Sandy Tandy's Hold On, The Orange Bicycle - Last Cloud Home, Pretty - Mustache In Your Face, The End - Under The Rainbow, Summit's - The Darkness, Churchills - Subsquent Finale, and one outrageous rip off of Purple Haze by I.R.A. with their one off single Dooley & The Ferris Wheel. Those are just a few I've found, and now this album. Not easy to find copies of Smile, looks like their album only had the one pressing in 1973 and that's it. Had a look on Discogs, there's a few copies available on there...but not CDs or digital releases that i can see. Do you know of a site that has a digital download of this one at all? Or a CD perhaps.

Damn! I don't know most of those names. I think I've heard about Fever Tree. Churchill's I adore; A very inventive band from Israel. Probably my favourite release from 1968. Really a killer album!
When it comes to a lot of Danish rock releases from the 60s, 70s and 80s there are really not a lot of reissues. Only the immortal classics by Ache, Day of Phoenix, Pan, The Old Man & The Sea, Culpeper's Orchard, Midnight Sun, Hurdy Gurdy, The Savage Rose, Young Flowers, Alrune Rod and Gasolin' has had their fair share of reissues. Then we have the rest like Smile which is just forgotten about like the band never existed. As a Danish guy myself, I started getting into 60s and 70s Danish rock music at the age of 17 years in 2013 when I discovered The Savage Rose. Of course I knew Gasolin' and Kim Larsen's solo career from way before as their songs are a part of the national song book. I remember in primary school that we would sing Kim Larsen and Gasolin' songs to start off the day haha. Good times!
My interest for Danish rock music has just peaked throughout the years as I've realized we had some great prog, heavy rock and psych releases. Some of them sounded just as good as the stuff that came out overseas. However, we had only 5% or less of that compared to the UK and the US, but for such a small country we did quite okay.
Today, most of the interest for the early 70s stuff from Denmark is really just a niche thing. Most of the die hard fans are old folks and lucky bastards who experienced the bands live in the 70s. Most younger rock and metal fans tends to just focus on what is newest in the underground or on the international scene, and I think most of them are underestimating what Denmark spawned of rock albums in the 70s. We're such a small country and most can't believe when the country actually achieved making something great besides our welfare state and Mercyful Fate. That's how I interpret things.
In my collection I have a bunch of Danish prog and psych releases that has never been rereleased or even digitalized. I will upload them here so that they can get some new fans instead of just being hidden treasures that no one knows about. Hopefully, they'll get some official reissues. That I would love to see happen! First, they just need some attention and love.

@@The-Danish-Record-Hunter I've heard of some of those, like Pan, Midnight Sun and Savage Rose. I don't know a lot about them, but will check those out in due course. The Churchill album is very eastern in it's sound, but very enjoyable. Do you seek out modern psyche rock bands at all? There's one from your neck of the woods that I've bought albums from; The Sonic Dawn. And if you like middle eastern pysche, check a band called Tree. Israeli band formed in the mid 2000s. They've only produced two albums to date, I've have their self titled debut from 2011. Check out a song called Eastern Blues...12.30 mins long, a blissful piece of psyche. I have other stuff I've found from the 1960s...like Stone Garden, Child, Velvet Fogg, Tamam Shud, and many many more. Not forgetting band like Pink Floyd & Beatles later albums too! I seek out modern stuff too, hundreds of band out there doing different takes on psyche & stoner music. Thank goodness for the internet is all i'll say...i'd never have found nuggets like these without it. I was born at the right time! :) I'm from a small country too, alas absorbed in with 3 other countries to make one united one - UK! But me....I'm a just a a wee celtic Welsh dude! :)

I must admit that it's rarely that I listen to new bands and it's a shame since I want to support the scene the best that I can. Doing corona and afterwards I've just been attracted mostly to old stuff such as hard progressive rock and heavy rock from the 70s. Also, I'm trying only to listen passionately to the records I have in my collection and I happen to buy only rare second hand LPs. I once wrote for a Danish metal zine and was bombarded with a ton of new promos to review every month and I think I just got dissilusioned with following every new act that was thrown at me. When that is said, I think there are some excellent new bands out there. Rock is definitely not dead. It continues to live on in the underground.

Thanks a lot! The musicians didn't get any real recognition besides what they did in Smile, as far as I know. Before Smile, some of the members played in a beat group called The Sharons. They released a 7-inch in 1965.
