  • Robert Trivers addresses the question of why we lie to others, and to our ourselves. Are we doomed to indulge in fantasies, inflate our egos, and show off? Can we correct our own biases? And is it even a good idea to battle self-deception?

    Language is great but has created a great illusion in our minds.

    If you can measure important facets of intelligence -- itself a huge undertaking -- it's not difficult to show the strong correlation to lying, at least in the laboratory setting described by Dr. Trivers. Unhappy conclusions, yes, but to understand our makeup, or what we "actually are," you're wise to avoid the influence of what you want us to be.

    Through objective observation of thoughts as they come into view, patience will in time return to you. THEN thoughts will turn anew as you will spontaneously realize things deep & true. A new "order" of thoughts will arise as you begin to see reality through YOUR OWN eyes, not blindly believing collective lies. Nor will you continue suffering the abuses of accepting excuses, An excuse is a lie that you buy then deny until the day you die. Accept the temptation to believe just one & your done.

    I'm the only person I trust to lie to me so honestly.

      I'm 100% sure I'm smart, and I'm 90% sure I lie slightly less than average, and 67% sure I lie a lot less than average. But it's with children so that may play a role.

    How do we disconnect from thought & regain objectivity so we can return to the reality of lost individuality? 1st realize you are a passenger on a runaway train of thought & have momentum of mind. The thoughts that "carry us away" are taking you away from yourself into certain psychosis. Reflexive emotional reaction fuel the train, So, 1st we need to, BE STILL & KNOW, that objectively observing thought gives us back the power of patience so we do not reflexively respond subjectively to thought.

    There was a lot said that I have to digest and decide on where I stand on things he talked about; however, studies do not lie. In addition, my teenage son, in his experience, is gifted in intelligence, agrees that smarter children do in fact lie more. He said he believes it's because they're smart enough to manipulate. Keep in mind that he did not hear Trivers mention manipulation, I paused the video as he was listening to his ipod and I simply asked the open-ended question if he thinks smarter kids lie more. After expressing the though of weirdness behind my question and reminding him that I am a psychology student and am interested in this stuff, that was the answer he gave. The stuff about mother and children was interesting to me, I intend to investigate that further. I cannot disagree with men being more over-confident and ignorant, lol. Even my teen son had to agree, to my surprise. (He is more self-aware in his older age and is generally more honest. He said he would have looked in the box as a younger child and lied about it, but asked the complex question about what kind of box it would be when I asked if he would look now. Interesting...). I found Trivers talk to be of interest for further investigation, but do not outright disagree with much of what he said.

    Everyone deceives themselves; Sartre called it "Bad Faith" and it is essentially unavoidable

    So how do we know if we are lying to ourselves or not?

      Chris B. be honest with yourself. are you happy? is ignorance bliss? do we rationalise to protect our minds etc. Robert talks about deception, not necessarily as a positive or negative thing (indeed it could be both) but rather a functional/evolutionary thing - there is a purpose to our deception both external and internal.

  • @xaedmon
    @xaedmon Před 12 lety

    Those dishonest with themselves will likewise be dishonest with others. So you may think, how can we be dishonest with ourselves? This implies two selves, & accurately so as ALL of us are saddled with an alternate cultural identity superimposed over innate identity, so the reality of our unfolding individuality is never realized, it remains wrapped in a cocoon of "communal" consciousness, buried alive behind a fragmented mosaic like mentality reflecting external reality. So, whom lies to who?

  • @xaedmon
    @xaedmon Před 12 lety

    So, we need to disconnect from identifying with thought, for those who lose their objective perspective by default become SUBJECTIVE. & those subjective to thought are not in control of thought, and so by default are being CONTROLLED through thought by another "being". Yes, it moves through your mind & realizes being through YOUR being, and without you, could be nothing. So, what exactly is "IT" ? it is collective will, & it's purpose is to de-purpose then re-purpose every person on the planet.

    Lying is a form of duplicity. There is a survival value to being able to deceive others. Children mimic their elders, Elders oftentimes appear to be lying to children - where do adults come up with their arbitrary rules? Children who seek truth-telling are ostracized - are called tattle tales and nerds! Socially skilled people are adept at lying to please others. Pleasing others gets you ahead as a rule of thumb.
