- ■ NEPAL, KATHMANDU: One of the first things I saw when I arrived downtown Kathmandu was a run down barber shop. From 7 in the morning til at least 8 at night (which is the latest I've walked by) this family of barbers work seven days a week. Usually I prefer the sitting on a chair on the street type of haircut experiences but I figured I'd give this barber a go for a change.
It turned out to be quite an entertaining haircut to say the least....

Sorry to say mate.. But these guys just run a being poor scam with their kids to lure away money from kind hearted people.... The Ahmedabad guy was a genuine pick....

You rewarded them for getting cheated. You have been charged five times the local price. In our culture we do not pay salaries to our kids. The whole business belongs to the family as one. You have done fabulous with the Ahmedabad baber, but this one is so sad and am really sorry to say it's so pathetic . Intention is nice but wisdom is a must .

He was trying to make sure the gift was given and received as intended. The intentions were good even if the inability to covnerse properly made it sound worse.

The thing is, the translation was perfect, they just did not know how to read, it’s not their fault though, and yes in many such family businesses in India/Nepal or anywhere in South-Asia and even South -East Asia, family members are not payed since they believe the money is going to the same family anyways & and people here do not have that tradition of “independence” or “when are you moving out & getting your own place”. Society is still patriarchal with father being the only one responsible for the economics of the family. In many families still, even if the son gets a job , his entire money goes straight to his parents.

Quite an expensive haircut.... I went to a small barber shop near Boudha / Kapan and had a haircut for NPR100 when I visited Nepal in 2019.... Was in Nepal for about a month and need a haircut in the middle of my trip there.
