This is a remaster of "Havana Smooth," a piece I wrote back in 1994 and which was used in the Apogee Software game 'Rise of the Triad.' It has been re-voiced for a full stage band and tweaked a bit to make it sound a little better than my original MIDI file.
The rework was done as part of a "Secret Santa" gift swap in the El Goonish Shive forums a few years ago. Thanks to Circe for letting me share the gift I gave her with the rest of the world.

Seriously - I wish someone would play this for their band director or corps director and then ask, "Can we please perform this? Please???"
Anyone who gets a serious yes - please tell your director to post a private message via my channel. I love this piece too much to only have it exist inside a computer. It needs to get exposed to some fresh air!!!!!

Your "Rise of the Triad" soundtrack is really good - I started off remembering "Run Like Smeg", listening to it, then thinking I should work up the saxophone solo, then it was followed by this amazing track, which now has me wanting to notate it for my own amateur dance band (we can always use more latin tunes). I'm just not sure I can pull off the flute solo, but that trombone solo is awesome.

These, definitely, and also Shadow Warrior. I think back to that magical christmas as a teen when my dad got me that game; at first I didn't know what it was, then I saw it was something along the lines of Duke 3D which dad knew I liked, so I installed it, started it up, and... well, the experience was memorable to say the least. Lot of nostalgia, and some really great music throughout that marathon of oldschool ninja shootouts and demon blasting. The city streets, howling winds, dark clouds, sacred halls and deadly showdowns are all there, in music, in memory. Thank you. =)

It's really me, but in this case I was not inspired by any outside influence. You see, the song is an arrangement of an Adagio for Strings and Organ, attributed to Tomaso Albinoni but possibly written by someone else. Search Wikipedia for Adagio in G Minor and read the accompanying article - in fact, the article says A Feast of Friends was influenced by the original Adagio (regardless of who actually wrote the thing). BTW, I was unaware of any controversy when I did my arrangement.

The music from the original Rise of the Triad is, without the slightest doubt, the most incredible music in any video game I've ever played, heard of, or eaten. It's no small part of the reason why I adore that game to this day. I wish I had a quarter of your talent as a composer. Every last track in the game is fantastic. So thank you, sir, for taking an already-great video game and making it truly memorable in every way.

Claude Bolling's "Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano," with Jean-Pierre Rampal on flute, was an influence. Don Sebesky's "The Contemporary Arranger" talks a bit about using flute in a jazz context, and even Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville" gave me one or two ideas. A group out of Austin called Beto y los Fairlanes was one of my influences for the overall style, as were several Drum & Bugle Corps of the day who played "Tiger of San Pedro."
