Tormach 8L Lathe - Tool Offset Setup

  • In this video I describe the procedure for setting up the tool offsets for the 6 lathe tools that I used to machine the Brass Index Bearings on the Tormach 8L Lathe in my previous video. The first tool is used as a master tool from which all subsequent tools were calibrated for the correct relative positions.

    Best video you have done yet. Very informative and each step explained thoroughly. This should help alot of 8L owners. One thing people may be wondering is how you defined the tools used in Fusion 360.

    John, thank you very much for the informative video. I do have a question I hope you can clarify. At 3:53, on the tool offset tab just after you reset tool 10, you stated that both the X and Z are zero because "they have been setup to be the same value as the X and Z values for the System". Initially I wasn't seeing the same zero values but I then realized you had pressed the 'Zero button' in the lower portion of the screen earlier. This was the key I had missed. Then at 5:32 you mention "Do not change the values of X and Z in the center of the screen". I take it that this means, after setting the first tool, I should not ever type in values in the X and Z in the lower portion of the screen (assuming my physical tools do not change from day to day), EXCEPT for those times when a small overall adjustment might be needed like you mentioned at 15:14. Or if I do a complete library reset. Does that sound right? Thanks again for the great content.

    Amazing video, this was very helpful, but isn't what you called a left hand facing tool a right hand tool? And vice versa? From what I and my team do, it's that way. Love the video!

    Cut off tool zero on it’s right side? I don’t think so.

      You must enjoy having your parts shortened by one tool width then. This video is absolutely correct. You always zero from the edge that is forming the finished surface on your part.
      ***ignore this comment, Dim Sum is correct for CNC turning

      @@Eric-vq9nqCAM software accounts for the cutoff insert width, check Fusion 360, etc… if you write g-code by hand, you may get away with zeroing on the right side, but why reach left ear with right hand 😂

      @@dimsum5567 Just checked and you're right. I do mostly manual turning with a DRO and CNC milling and hadn't even realized.
