hello @TheCod3r that nvme you use is gen 3 is because of that didn't work Crucial P3 is GEN3 and P3 Plus is GEN4 :D xbox and ps5 only support GEN4 i have the seem problem when i do with a PC SN530 1TB
@@xZigTrOX Great point - hopefully he sees this and tries with a gen 4 drive
@@mattw3406 yeah :D
@@xZigTrOX i have tried with gen 4 ssds and still doesnt work
@@Urbanz95 you have to use CH SN530 or XA1-311024. it is a pcie4.0 x2 drive. other driver won't work.
Glad to see your pushing the limits for everyone’s benefit again Phil👍👍
"Because I can" is the reply of the brave.
Haha 😄
if you want to speed up the copy, use: "sudo dd if=/dev/sdc of=/dev/sdd bs=1m count=1100 status=progress" that will set the blocksize to 1 MB and copy about 1.1G of data (enough for the master partition table copy, and the first 1GB partition then it will stop. The larger block size will speed it up to whatever speed your USB can handle (36MB/sec ish if over USB2) Also means you can just leave it running as it will stop after the partition anyway.
yeah setting the blocksize is a must with dd, otherwise you're gonna be in for a long wait
Maybe also worth trying to clone the whole thing and then running gparted on the new drive (/dev/sdd), give it a write (w). It should complain about:
Warning! Secondary header is placed too early on the disk! Do you want to
correct this problem? (Y/N): y
That should fix it for good.
Though quicker, this also introduces additional risk with the copy, as you can lose bits during the DD copy process which can introduce failures.
I always do a 512byte / 0.5m block size at max, unless I'm populating a small capacity drive, or committing over a pure PCIe interface.

Maybe firmware limitation with large address awareness above 1TB? Maybe try 2TB to see where the limit hits.
Got the idea of trying to update internal rather than buying an external. I might try it and it'll be more confidently thanks to you. Excellent vid, m8
That’s quality, fair play dude, you smash it like always 💪🏽
It looks like the User Content partition is the one you want to max out with the additional drive space. So instead of creating a random new partition for the unallocated space, just expand the User Content partition (the 800gb one) to take up any space that would otherwise be unallocated. An easy way to do this would be to boot into either system rescue live cd or gparted's live cd on a computer with both drives attached.
802 gb seems to be correct for series x, since it takes space for the quick resume and other os stuff.
We need xfix to write another window script like he did for the Xbox one
Great attempt Phil. I work in IT and have had issues cloning M.2 SSDs due to the logical block size. This is something that is set in the firmware and can't be changed.
I don't know what the block size is for the Xbox SSD's, but I'd hazard a guess the new SSD is different, which is why it won't clone. Maybe check that and potentially try another 2TB or 4TB drive which has the same block size as the original SSD.
Great to see an experimental video Phil 👍 can't win them all !! (yet 😉)
Bro, all you need to do is backup the boot partition which is the first partition using the tool Macrium workstation. Copy that partition to the new disk, and reinstall the system from usb. It’s very easy.
It be like:
“So Phil why did you do it?”
Phil: “Because I Can”
You have to find a clone utility which allows the following:
Sector-by-sector clone, also known as bit-by-bit copy, means to clone all the sectors on a hard drive, even if the sector is blank or it is a logically bad sector. Thus, the cloned drive will keep exactly the same as the source drive
Macruim reflect
got here thanks to Louis and been binge-watching your channel!
Love your videos phil .without your videos no one would know things
I hope you get your 100K soon. Very well deserved Phil Amazing content as always

Have you considered putting the 1TB SSD and 4TB SSD into your PC and using partition software (not Window own) to do the cloning? (I use AOMEI, but there are other free versions too)
Did this still work for you?
@@MyCatTookOverMyChannel No, I don't even have an Xbox.
Won't work. Also the reason why I knew from the start this video wouldn't go anywhere. The xbox series consoles have a drive whitelist of 3 or so models that were used by MS inside those consoles from the factory (WD SN530, SN560, SSSDTC/Lite-On XA1 (XA1-311024)) that work, and everything else will be rejected even if you clone your OG drive to it 1:1
@@Knaeckebrotsaege Appreciate your expertise!
Ooooh, you're so close!! to 100K and a larger SSD. Great Video! Thank You. 😀
Im guessing this is old news by now, but you could use macrium reflect to make a backup of the 1GB partition and restore that onto the new drive.
I say try a 2tb next video! It will work.
your workshop isn't a mess.....it's just your personal hoard of treasure, people are so quick to judge these days
Well-done keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍 hope your well 👍
Try using a software called “R-Drive Image” you will be able to see all partitions on a drive, either copy them on the fly to another drive, or save the partitions as an image and burn onto a drive later. I am very sure you can copy your 1GB partition from the drive to your 4TB, i have done similar things using this software for Windows and Mac drives…
It might have failed as you parititoned it in windows before doing the linux part... a GPT partition table is stored at the start of the drive with a backup copy at the end of the drive... the xbox might not be happy if they dont match (with a blank unpartitioned drive, the backup copy wouldnt exist at the end at all)
I remember with the Xbox 360 there were firmware limits to the size of the disk you could upgrade. At the time it was awesome going from a 20GB drive to 120GB. Given they are making a 2TB Xbox Series X. Once those are released it may be possible to upgrade to 2TB on all Xbox Series consoles.
You're only stalled temporarily. I like how you're integrating console knowledge with computer hardware and command lines. Funny how much you learn when you have a goal in mind.
Keep On going… ONE DAY you’ll do IT!!!
And thats why we don't use windows disk manager to manage partitions.
Xbox propably searches for a partition starting at the first sector.
So you have to copy the partition table first, then write it to the drive. Then use DD to copy the data byte by byte.
Check the start sector with detailed disk manager commands.
Your awesome phil. Good video good repair guy CZcamsr.. thank for teaching us with your experience
i ended up here down a rabbit hole of trying to make my own expansion drive using a 2280 and cloning the wd_black c50 with not nearly enough knowledge on the subject.
i have a series x since release nov 2020 and my console running as good as new this year alone I put around 2300hrs into it so I wouldn't say the SSD fail quite alot.
I think I would be painting the dangerous SSD connector on the copier RED, or at least writing "Danger Will Robinson" on it - lol -.
I have already tried upgrading a Series S to 2TB WD 2230 SSD and it threw an E109 error. I think we have to wait for M$ to whitelist it.
i think with the recent dashboard update xbox series s is now ready to accept 1tb with the black edition refresh but since the OS got no clue of anything above 1tb native storage It doesnt know how to accept and manage it
U r becoming the consoles no 1 fixer on the web 🎉
My internal drive storage is full just off the new cod, def need to get a internal upgrade
Dude I've been watching you for over 2 years now on various accounts. Do you ever clean up your desk / work station? 😂😂
Actually every other day lol, it's just a very busy desk and gets messy quickly 🤣
@TheCod3r 🤣🤣
You need to format ssd on Xbox memory card , then copy secret partition and well work , remember you need ssd Gen 4 only that work
i love how you constantly wing it... fake it until you make is as it were..
I'm sure this has been said. But when you are saying the security key is changed on install, you should now be able to do a complete 100% clone of the 1tb drive onto another 1tb drive and both should be able to boot the Xbox shouldn't they?
Lidl's have back in at mo the crocodile clip kits to make your own leads, not too bad quality either and I am constantly needing new crocs for stuff hehe
They sell SMT spacers for NVMe by the way
Great content as always..
I have an order with pcbway right now, it was cheaper to get 5 boards made up and use components that I have here and (and one that I scavenged from the old board) than it was to pay Krups for a new sensor board.
Awesome, I've used them myself a couple of times so speaking from experience they do provide a fantastic value for money 💰
ive tried to clone drives for my xbox series s before, but one big hurdle (i think) is the drive brand, ive gotten perfect clones from the stock drive onto a sabrent 1tb drive, but the console won't boot, but if i clone it to an official drive it does work
Привет тебе из России. Попробуй ssd с контроллером PS5019-E19. На дбольшенстве ssd из Xbox используют контроллеры PS5019-E19t.
Nice try on gettin a 4TB to work, I’d say try a 2TB 2230!
Wife just come into the room asking is everything OK.All she can hear is my saying start ya b@#*♤rd😂
my guess is it is like the 360, they had security sectors for the drive back in the day. you could only write them to specific drives with specific sizes. I remember buying a WD BEVS series drive, it was noted that even if you bought a terabyte size it would only format with the 500 GB at the time.
When you clone you need software to adjust the partition sizes if you clone without software you will clone the exact sizes of the previous drive.
@@crownless236 Love when people with no clue about the topic spread BS like you just did. Has zero to do with that. The largest official 360 HDDs are 500GB, no larger ones exist, and therefore no secret key exists to modify WD HDDs to imitate an original drive larger than 500GB
great video. Would it be possible to install a 2TB or greater SSD internally.
Great video thanks 🎉
Any time someone says sticky tape. I have the urge to say God bless you.
Hey can you compare the two hex files on those keys. Then find the difference and maybe we can find that same code on the chip on the console. It has to be storing the ssh key somewhere if it's updated each time
Have you tried to use Macrium to copy the partition and then write it to a new ssd that is connected to your computer via usb?
getting closer
If you are scared of the SSD ever going bad and unreadable, wouldn't it be a good option to clone the drive in advance and then start using the SSD?
you can do that but its ultimately useless, because as you've seen in this video, if do a clone and at any moment later you reinstall or update the OSU, this will change the Key in the CPU and the current SSD, that means that the backup clone is rendered useless since its stuck with an old key that wont match the newer one in the CPU.
If you could show us a way to mod the Series X to change that power supply to external, that would be great
Wicked pissah !! This is great!
Did you not notice the series s doesn't have a power brick, meaning the consoles board handles 240v your hand rubbing the underside, is excellent for your viewers
You're wrong
💚💚 Love your work!
hey dude if all partitions got lost on the original ssd what can i do to get my xbox series s working again
Maybe you can try a NVME adapter to pci-express then use a raid card with redundant raid setup. Will it work? 😅
I did that back on the OG Xbox and got my Xbox banned on Xbox Live. It was easier back then of course.
Yeah definitely was. I'll be trying a 2TB soon 😉
I might sell my current Series S to upgrade to the 1tb version later this year. 400gb is not enough for anyone these days especially since most AAA titles are 80+ gigabytes. I had to order a 256gb external SSD a few months back and I just ordered a second 512gb SSD to further expand my storage. That being said the price of the Series S is low and I paid even less than that for mine because it was an "after Christmas" overstock from BestBuy. It was on sale for a whopping $199. I paid $299 for my PS4 Slim in January 2022. So I guess its not all that bad, but still... Microsoft should have released the S with 1tb and the X with 3tb.
That was a waste of money you should of just ordered a 2tb SSD
Microsoft should have stopped dicking around and used a standard 2280 ssd without any roadblocks for end users, and provided a second slot for expansion, accessible without disassembling the whole console
You can do it!!!
Hi I have a SSD removed from a faulty series s could I use this in an adapter and use in the back of my current series s? Good channel btw just subscribed
Hi there im part way through your video mate, you could try a software hdd raw copy tool for example hddguru or EaseUS Disk Copy, i hope this helps i believe both of these programs are free. Because its a Rax copy it does not need to understand what its copying. Its done sector by sector or in the case of a ssd cell by cell. regards Richard quadrant2005
Have you tried copying the partitions using a programme called EaseUS Partition Master.
What type did you use NS 530 1T?
Or just NVME G4 of any kind?
Seems easy enough, but do all M.2s have velocity architecture hardware feature sets. Nope.
Great work :) Did your Xbox get banned after upgrading to the 1tb ?
Not as far as I know bud. I ended up giving it away to a viewer but I've not heard anything about it being banned yet 😀
Have you tried cloning this with a 2230 eg Crucial 2400 1TB M.2 2230, was thinking of doing that myself? Does the boot image still show, as I have seen a video where they just cloned the security partition then had to add the boot image in? Thanks for all of your videos :) Learn alot from them . Cheers
I wonder if you could just use the SSD from one of those Seagate expansion cards without doing any of this…
I'm wondering if the Xbox Series Gen use the same limitations as the Xbox One Gen. I know the Xbox One Gen hard drive, there is a limit of 2TB drive or 1662GB of usable data. You can push it all the way up to a 1947GB using the Xbox one formatting script tool, but you would have to sacrifice a 3 or 4TB hard drive. Is the main SSD on the new gen limited also?
Awesome video!!!
Would it be possible to upgrade an Xbox one x using a regular 4 TB SATA 3 SSD?
I have been trying for the past day but xbox only recognizes it as a 1.6 TB Drive.
Any ideas?
So in theory if I had the know how and proper equipment could I buy two 1 terabyte ssds and clone whichever ssd to the other one every 6 months to possibly extend the life of the xbox?
Hey man big fan. I was just wondering if I could have you fix one of my Counsels I have a xbox series s Digital it beeps but that's it doesn't turn on or nothing
Hi,
I ordered your 1TB ssd and cloned it offline using your cloning tool however once i re- assembled my xbox and switched it on i didnt have to install the OSU also the 1TB ssd was displaying only 312gb further more all my games and data was transferee over. Which step did i miss ?
I've a spare series s and recently repaired a series x with a damaged power button flex, so I'm wondering if I could use the 512SSD from the S in an compact flash style external enclosure?
What do you think about the AIXUN 3TB soldering station?
👍Nice one mate
And what's up with the expansion SSDs? Is there some sort of key too, or could you just use the original .5G as expansion?
Would be good to get a 4TB drive working in it and looking at the manual for the cloner it says new disks need to be initialised and formatted with GPT before the can be used for an offline clone maybe that will help but hopefully you figure it out.
Are these 1tb like the expansion drives where it has to be a specific 2230 (SN530 I believe)?
Welldone
Maybe I'm gonna say something dumb but why not trying to clone the drive in Linux ? I usualy do an image with the "disk" utility and you can restore it to another drive.
My ears are hurting 😂😂😂
Nice one 🎉. You be having Microsoft banging on your door now 😂
Haha hopefully so I can kick Phil Spencer in the gonads 😄
@@TheCod3r lol
Anybody going to buy the gamesir g7 se? I'm so curious about the hall effect sticks.
Dont the ssd need to a wd sn530 or something along those lines?? Im sure its was something like that i read lol
I’m just wondering would you consider customising controllers
😂 your room is clean compared to my kitchen side xbox's and laptops /phones ect take up half my kitchen my partner hates it I keep saying they all have a use at some point u never know when someone needs a part that u have
Create an image of the original drive, then copy that image onto the 4TB SSD.
Limitations of Cloning software? makes since you can upgrade to 1TB but not 4TB...
Hi Phil, if you've manged that with the S is it possible to do it with the X???
There are any working method to use this method on a external enclosure? 🤔
Wish we could do the same for the ps5 😂 would require de-soldering those NAND flashes and even that onboard ssd controller tho…
Sony Atleast gave us option to add additional generic SSD whereas MS went the proprietary route.
@@Neo_Rain146 Yea, that's very true. I myself installed 2TB nvme SSD since day one. But I always prefer to "upgrade" (if possible) the storage where OS lies. And given Sony's solution, I'd imagine replace those NAND flashes with same specs(sort of..) but double in capacity without touching the 12-channel controller to double the internal storage quite possible.. (Again, that'd need quite excessive reballing / re-soldering.. AND,.. PS5 Slim with larger internal storage could be very well in the horizon..
Hi. Any chance unbrick series s if no data portion left?
JUST NEED A TX TERMINATOR TO FIX THE MICROSOFT JUNK???😂😂😂
