  • Removing the pistons and sleeves on an International DT466 engine. I recommend using a sleeve puller but a block of wood and a hammer also get's the job done!

    I have a DT530E torn apart right now. Liner o-ring leak and scored piston! Everything else except the hard brittle liner seals looks good.

    I wonder if excessive use of starting fluid caused the cracked pistons. Be sure to use the right coolant and add a coolant treatment system. The rust inhibitor is important in these old engines.

      That's what I figure, one of the previous owners used starting fluid because they probably ran the fuel system dry. I have the correct coolant in it for wet sleeves, to avoid cavitation on the sleeves.

      No they take a take a special coolant for wet sleeves, this prevents cavitation and pitting of the sleeves. You can get the additive if you want to run green coolant. It is very important to change the coolant filter to keep your water pump from getting damaged by debris.

    I see alot of poor maintenance and over heating issues, check everything on that block?
    make sure there is nothing clogged up.
    Also make measurements too.
    cbeck for heat warping areas.

    Heidi love this DT466 series, nicley done but sometimes its hard to understand what you're saying, maybe your microphone placement? Keep up this excellent rebuild ...love it!!

    Since all the o rings are brittle or rotted from sitting i would maybe consider replacing the air compressor I'm not sure if the dt466 has coolant running through the compressor like cat Cummins or Detroits. Had this happen to me on a cat kept getting coolant in oil tore it down all i could find was a little bit of Harding on the o rings other wise everything was perfect so i just put new o rings on the liners put put it all back together ran perfectly fine next day coolant in oil again the only thing I never checked was compressor pulled the pan again and pressure tested the cooling system and watched underneath the internals and after about 10 minutes i noticed coolant dripping from the front gear train pulled compressor put plugs into the compressor coolant ports fed regulated air at 15psi then you could hear air hissing through the oil return hole in front of compressor put new compressor on problem solved then I was pissed because of having to tear the engine completely apart 🤬🤬🚬🚬🤬🤬🚬🍻🍻its good that you have an extra pair of hands to help 👍👍

      That's excellent advice, thank you! The air compressor is coolant-cooled and they do have some issues with them leaking coolant into the oil from them mostly from the front cover area. I did not replace any of the air compressor components when I did the in-frame. But the new sleeve O-rings seemed to have fixed the problem on this truck. I did come to the conclusion later on that it must have been overheated several times because #6 sleeve was slightly out of round. If anyone else has a similar problem I recommend trying what you did before a complete teardown!

    Check you piston oil cooler /oil squirters that can cause piston scoring and piston scoring

      Checked them before re-assembling, all looked good! Good idea for anyone that has scoring but no obvious O-ring failures or overheating!

      I am thinking that a previous owner must have used some sort of starting fluid at some point. That seemed to be a main reason why diesel pistons are cracked. But still just a guess!

      Was because it was losing power or smoking or just generally wouldn't run

      I asked the question because my 444t could use a top end rebuild, but I don't think it's losing power at all other than maybe the oil pan, cooler and stuff needs to be cleaned and replaced. I just would like some input on it. Missy

      I rebuilt this one because the liner Orings had failed and was mixing coolant and oil together. It also had a lot of blow by from the cracked pistons. It didn't seem down on power though, just lots of coolant in the oil.

      I think around 30-40hrs depending on how much is done to it. I was a little over 40hrs but I rebuilt the whole head and went through a few other components.
