It’s time for another wedding in Westeros, and though the murder happened before the ceremony, the ceremony itself wasn’t a very happy one.
Welcome back to ScreenCrush, I’m Ryan Arey, and this is all of the Easter eggs, references, and little things that you may have missed from Episode 5 of House of the Dragon.
We get our first look at Runestone, which is the seat of House Royce in the Vale. You remember. Tyrion, the moon door, all of that. We quickly meet Lady Rhea and her cousin- you’ll remember that she is the estranged wife of Daemon Targaryen. He hates her, and as we soon discover, it’s mutual. She doesn’t seem to like her cousin Gerald either, so maybe she just doesn’t like anyone. Having a husband unsuccessfully try to divorce you around a thousand times might have that effect.
House Royce is one of the Vale’s most prominent houses, and we’ve met two of its members on Game of Thrones. Ser Waymar Royce is one of the first characters that we ever meet in the entire series, and his father Yohn Royce was a presence on the show from Season 4 onward.
When she returns to Runestone, Lady Rhea runs into Daemon, and as we’ve already mentioned, her disdain for him is not subtle. It’s made even more clear that Daemon doesn’t make it a habit of visiting often when she asks about what brings him to the Vale. Her remark about sheep lets us know that Daemon’s ongoing parade of insults about both her and the Vale have reached her ears. She knows what buttons to push with him, giving a diss about how Viserys chose Rhaenyra to be his heir instead of Daemon.
She’s not afraid until she asks what Daemon is going to do now. When he wordlessly continues to advance on her horse, she seems to realize that the moment has finally come. As formidable as Lady Rhea looks, Daemon is as unpredictable to her as he is to us. Her line of “I knew you couldn’t finish” as well as her remark about their unconsummated marriage lets us know that she might know all about Daemon’s sexual problems. Is he going to leave her there to die, like Arya once left Sandor Clegane?
    No, he isn’t.
Now I didn’t catch this last week, but apparently in the brothel Daemon was able to be aroused. In the after show interview, the creators claimed this was because his power dynamic had shifted during that scene.
This was a marriage that was done out of duty, not out of love. It ends in murder, and will only lead to more conflict. When paired with secrets becoming more private knowledge, Rhea’s remarks about war, and sexual appetites in general, you have a scene that almost represents this entire episode. What is Daemon going to do next? He’s going to put his foot where it hurts and apply pressure.
When we first see Viserys, he is being brought a bucket to throw up in. He waves the bucket away, trying to contain his puke-before giving in and vomiting over the side of the ship. This shows that he is losing control of his body. This might just be seasickness, but the King looks like a tired and sick old man for most of this episode. He is well past his prime, and the vomit is going to come whether he waves a bucket away or not.
We see that Lord Lyonel Strong, former master of laws, has now been made Hand of the King after Otto Hightower was sacked in the previous episode. When he hands a handkerchief to the King post-vomit, we couldn’t help but think that his role has been reduced to what Jaime Lannister once said it was.
When we see Rhaenyra observing this, it likely reinforces what her duties as the Targaryen heir are. She did not take them seriously during her actions in Episode 4, and Viserys had to remind her of the bigger picture, including Aegon’s prophecy. Seeing the King in such a frail position lets her know that her time could be closer than she thought. She’s taking her role seriously, and no longer wears the Valyrian steel necklace that Daemon gave her around her neck. She took it off following their encounter in the previous episode, but it has stayed off.

One thing I noticed during the episode, but really during your breakdown was lady Alicents wardrobe. In the beginning of the series she wore blue, then when she married Viserys she wore Targaryen Red, as the series has gone on the red has become more diluted. In this episode she meets with her father outside of the castle at Kings Landing before he leaves in the most diluted red yet, then when she meets with ser criston she is wearing blue, almost like she's starting to change inner loyalties and colors. And then after she finds out about Rhaneyra from ser Criston she enters the wedding party in full on green, owning her family name and heritage. Very cool detail.

It’s sad but also very telling of his current state of mind, he’s caring less and less about dignity and how he’s perceived as he grows more miserable and sick.
I have lung cancer and I fully understand… sometimes when you’re sick and miserable your ‘fucks-to-give’ meter is extra low and a few minor inconveniences will drive you to acting like a crazy person!

I thought Christon showed a moment of regret when Joffery was speaking to him, where he realised the situation could have remained a secret but he'd just spilled all to Alicent. I didn't understand why he reacted the way he did, I thought Joffery had already walked off so at first, I thought he was attacking Daemon in jealousy after seeing him close to Raenyra. It didn't seem to be in Christon's nature to attack someone so unprovoked.

He attacked joffery because he literally thought his life was over. First the queen seemingly knew his secret even though he blurted it out but she didn't punish him leaving him to wonder what will happen. Remember he fully expects to be tortured to death and asks for mercy with a quick death.
THEN here comes someone else directly threatening him with the blackmail. To him, everyone might as well know, it's only a matter of time. So he decides he's going out on his own terms. He'll take out the guy directly threatening him and then he'll perform his ritual suicide. His honor and dignity mean so much to him and that's why he went off the trails

Everyone is misreading the scene with Deamon and his wife.
Daemon has returned to The Veil *in disgrace* and to the wife he hates, *on orders from his King* (remember last episode?).
The instant Daemon's wife saw him she started berating him.
Daemon said nothing because (mostly) every word she said was true. (and it is generally quite futile to even bother arguing with woman)
When Daemon approached his wife, he did so slowly and cautiously with his hands in clear view. (not provocative). He could see that she was riling herself up, and didn't want to provoke her further.
Her fear and unease caused her horse to be agitated, Daemon saw that and was moving to calm the horse.
It was his wife's sudden move for her weapon, after she worked herself up into a fear state, that spooked the horse into throwing her. ( NO, Daemon did NOT cause the horse to throw her).
Her fall from the horse *BROKE HER NECK* just like Christopher Reeve when he was thrown from a horse. In other words she was paralyzed from the neck down.
This was confirmed by the shot of Daemon stepping on her arm. That look on her face wasn't a wince of extreme pain, it was a look of despair because she new she was paralyzed.
She did not want to live as nothing but a head with a vegetable for a body, so she asked Daemon to finish her off. Saying "I knew you couldnt finish" was her obstinate way of asking for mercy.
    Daemon obliged her request .

      1) Daemon said *nothing* at all he let the wife that hates him spew her vitriol at him.
      2) ALL of Daemon's movements were slow and open movements with is hands clearly visible... THIS is what one does when they are intentionally trying to be NON threatening
3)It was clearly his wife's unease and sudden movement that agitated and spooked the horse throwing her... tell me EXACTLY how a calm non-threatening person spooks a horse? (I'm not being rhetorical here I want to hear your legitimate excuse)
      4) Damon clearly, as shown in the scean tried to grab the horse's reigns when it reared back, in an attempt to prevent it from doing so.
      5) Daemon was walking AWAY to leave her there, when she chided him saying "I knew you couldn't finish" only then did he pick up the rock and do as she requested.

Criston Cole confessed to the Queen after a short questioning because he felt guilty over what he did and was suicidal.
Laenor's boyfriend just made a lucky guess based on how Cole reacted around the princess.
Criston murdered Laenor's boyfriend because he was afraid that Laenor's boyfriend would tell people what he had done. He also felt as if Laenor's boyfriend was mocking him in a way. Criston wanted to die, but he wanted to keep his breaking of his vows secret from others if possible. His actions in how he responded to Alicent and how he responded to Laenor's boyfriend might not make a lot of sense, but Criston is full of shame and other emotions and can react unpredictably.
The Vale accuser was so focused on the murder that he wasn't thinking about the inheritance. If anything, that inheritance gives more motive for Daemon to have committed the murder. (it seems strange, though, since inheritance of noble positions usually only follows blood lines, not marriage, so I'm not sure if Daemon actually has a claim).

No one mentions how when House Velaryon enters they give off this sense of power and family as seemingly they have many members and all who look healthy whereas viserys is dying, or getting weaker, his wife's dead and also his children besides the princess and Aegon, his brothers an outcast. Are there no more "dragons" left.

I almost feel like there was a scene missing before Cristen goes apeshit on Joffrey or at the very least the scene where he's telling him he's figured out the secret should have been closer related to the fight. Either way, both of them could have been a bit more discrete 1. in Joffrey reveling what he knows, and 2. if Cris really wanted to beat Joffrey's head in the middle of a crowded party was the worst place to do it.

Joffrey believed that Christon was a game player like him. But Christon has no game. Christon is a warrior first. He was already near his boiling point before Joffrey's light threat. Just bad timing and miscommunication that led Christon to murder him.

4:24 Rhaenyra wouldn't have to kill a single person if Alicent just accepted the succession. It doesn't matter if the rest of the realm is unhappy with the succession if there isn't a legitimate CHALLENGER to the throne. If no one challenges it, Rhaenyra would be queen without a problem.
Case in point, Viserys didn't have to kill Rhaenys to solidify his succession because Rhaenys submitted to duty in the outcome of Jaehaerys's decision.

Goes to show that you don't understand the issue of succession and it most certainly wouldn't be as simple as alicent accepting it. What if aegon decides he wants the throne? There will be countless people supporting his claim.
But they don't even need to want the throne for others to want them to rule. The people who don't want a woman ruling the 7 kingdoms will still want a male leader, regardless. Whether that means open rebellion or not

While the spoiled brat rhaenyra gets litteraly every opportunity to be with someone of her choosing (to the limited degree of princess suitors) and then continues to do what she wants. Damn anyone else who suffers for her actions. Everything about her is the behavior of a petulant child

So I went back and watched that conversation between Alicent and Rhaenyra and she didn't ACTUALLY lie to Alicent. At least, not directly.
Alicent accused Rhaenyra of sleeping with Daemon in a brothel. Rhaenyra denied this. She only TECHNICALLY lied in an indirect way when she said that questioning her virtue was "an act of treason"(when she was trying to determine who gave Otto the info).
