  • This is the fourth installment of our series "Homage to Africa" on the splendors of African Art. In this lecture, MMAC Director Rafael Chacón speaks about the sacred Yoruba city of Ile Ife and its importance as the source of the founding myths of Nigeria's great medieval kingdoms, including the celebrated Benin Kingdom that rose to power in the 13th century.

This is my heritage. My ancestors were taken from this kingdom brought to CUBA in the slave trade. We still practice the IFA religion. This culture is connected to Egypt. Yoruba oral tradition says we come from the Nile Valley probably Southern Egypt Northern Sudan. The religion is very similar. My father did his DNA and found he was a descendant of Ramses III. Proud YORUBA descendant here

Great! But that narrative about Yoruba origin from Nile valley is wrong. Everything started from Ground Zero, and thats why Ile-Ife is within point zero point on the latitude and longitude (equator). Even this modern Ife, where this arts are derived from is much younger than the more ancient Ife, which was more to the north of Nigeria and were same people of the Nok Culture.. Compare the artwork at 13:21 to a Nok Culture terracotta displayed in the link below, 2nd from left on front row. Nok was around 1000 BCE.

Itsekiri language is an indigenous yoruboid language. It wasn't magically formed in a lab from different ingredients. It borrowed elements from portuguese and English later on and very little of bini. You should be the one to rest.
Awori dialect of yoruba has absolutely nothing of benin borrowing. Instead it's benin who has heavily borrowed yoruba language and unlike you my proof is in the benin dictionary where about 30% of words are of yoruba etymological roots.

@@toyosioyejobi309 First of, my mum is Itshekiri. I was born and raised in warri!
      Now what is Yoruboid?
Even the essence of unifying all south west state by creating a central identity but with a name given to y’all by Fulani, not just any name but a name that was a slur against Oyo people describing them in a condescending manner. “Yariba” the word Yoruba never existed in any South West state prior to the Fulani giving you people that identify.
I speak Itshekiri to some extent and there are more Igala words in it, than Yoruba but because the yorubas were more powerful, educated and closed proximity to Itshekiri, they influenced that language as “Yoruboid” If 2 Itshekiri people speak their native tongue you’d barely understand a dime but an Igala person would understand to some degree.
Now, there are many Japanese words similar to Urhobo and Benin, also the Japanese former capital is called “Edo” so should we say we influenced Japanese culture or language? Especially with the fact that we never hard any contacts with them until the 90s.
Because similar words appears on dialects or languages doesn’t mean anyone influenced anybody especially when there are no evidence to support such callous rhetorics.
Ife or Oyo never had any recorded contacts with Itshekiri until 18 century, that was already 200 years after Benin established monarchy system there with a title Olu of Itshekiri.
Awori has a distinct Yoruboid with a lot of similarities to Benin than any other yoruboid and that’s a fact, such could have been influenced by Oduduwa, since he was their revered leader and a Benin prince.

Please, kindly take off line this misinformation. Ife was never a kingdom. Rightly put Benin and Ozo were empires or kingdoms. What has come to the fore are the lies perpetrated by early Yoruba educated elites. It has been established that the first king of Ife was called Obatala and not Oduduwa. Oduduwa was a stranger and never founded Ife. The story of Oduduwa being the progenitor of the Yoruba race is a mere imagination of Yoruba scholars because the people were not called Yorubas at the time of Oduduwa. Until now the question of what the people were called then has not been answered. The only link between Ife and Benin is the kingship and not the people. Why the Benin’s believed that Oduduwa was the Banished Prince but the Yoruba believe that Oduduwa defeated Obatala to become their king. Secondly,Oromiyan was sent to Benin by his father Oduduwa to his ancestral home Benin because his was old and already a king when there interregnum in Benin kingship. Oromiyan was never the first divine king of Benin. The first kings of Benin were called Ogisos which was the first dynasty of Benin kings. Oromiyan was of the second dynasty of Benin kings called Obas. Please kingly visit Nigeria and the different parlance’s to get your facts correct? Because in Africa the king is the custodian of the story of the kingdoms and not the lies told by scholars due to their earlier western education. In order to correct these lies and falsehood earlier told by these scholars the Benin kingdom has written a book called ‘Benin Anthology”. Thanks

Obatala wasn't the first king of ife you idiot, he was the last of a previous headship practiced before oduduwas people from oke ora a community of ife defeated Obatala and united all the communities into one entity, he then sent his sons and grandsons to spread that system in many lands around ife. TV hahahaha keep twisting history. Even your Oba of Benin stated clearly that every historians agreed that Oranmiyan came to the land Idu Igodomigodo and fought, meant a lad that gave birth to Ado whom is later called Eweka for Oranmiyan and he established Obaship in that land. We all know what the propaganda of the runaway price that Oba Erediauwa cleverly put in his book, just because the Aborigines of the land reminded him of the Obligation of Ekiokpagha treaty. So he distorter history to suit his narrative.

First off lie this analysis and it's map it's totally wrong. Let me educate this white man. In 14, 15 and 16 century Benin stretching all over the Southern Nigeria, have a borderline with Zanfara in the North, and borderline with Dauma now Ghana while Biafra to now Cameroon, in 17 centuries Benin were now known as Great Benin, there were more discovery such as the Bito, Camdrones later corrupted to Cameroon and the word Biafra is now Biasar, under it were the Gabou now Gambon, Congo etc . In same 17 centuries you now start to see Biafra gradually in the Nigrovm now know as Nigeria though this findings was highly criticize due to its inaccuracies published by German cartography Johan Homann, which led to a new map of Africa in 1805-1817, this map again had Benin, then bight of Benin stretching to Calabar and Biafra again was in present day Cameroon closer to Calbongo to down of Gabon, and Equator or Equinoctial line now Equatorial Guinea. By 1851, the gulf of Guinea was introduced, then Biafra still to Cameroon and Benin Empire. 1856, Benin now has a borderline with Kano, Calabar, Yarribah(Yorobas) so, Yorobas land was only given an account of from this age, their land which was farther closer to the North, and Dahomey. In 1880, Benin Empire Ado still very strong, but there come Lagos, Ibadan, Ibo, Igara, Bonny, and Biafra was still under Cameroon present location at this time the white men have divided Africa to however they seek fit. These was the last record given by Andriveau-Goujon J. Between 1832-1897. It's different when you contract in population of spoken language compare to talking about oldest Empire. If, you talk about old and greatest, it is hand down the Benin Empire starting from around 300 AD. Benin was a combination of different languages not one spoken language.
