  • I mentioned in my last video a mysterious experience that occurred during a camping trip on Johns Mountain. I share that experience in this video but only after I show a Mora, some rolled charcloth and my new coffee press. Or whats know as a French press.

When it got real quiet, the animals sensed a formidable entity, plus some animals can see into the infrared spectrum where you can't. You did the right thing, and now you live, to tell about it. Thanks for sharing I enjoyed it.

Great story Dave. Thanks for sharing. I'm an avid outdoorsman and have spent many nights in the woods, either camping or walking out from a hunt, most times alone. I can tell that incident will be forever etched in your memory. You look like a no nonsense honorable guy and I believe every word you said about that night. I watched this Fri night but didn't comment .. I wanted to think. I could feel your reluctance to even tell the story of John's Mountain. I totally understand that. I have had a very similar experience. I know one thing ..... when it goes DEAD SILENT .... there is either something unnatural there or your in for one heck of a nasty storm. I believe there are things of this world that we do not understand. It sounded to me as if there was something there that DID NOT want you there. You did the right thing by leaving. Someone commented it could have be a mountain lion ... not ... they stalk absolutely silent. I also want to commend you on the close relationship you seem to have with Nick. I had that with my Dad too .. very happy to see you two bush crafting and filming together. Thank you for teaching us what you know. I admire your intelligence and creativity. And, yes, even the mistakes ... it helps us understand this is not easy and things go wrong. I appreciate your honesty in leaving the "screw ups" in your videos... so many don't. It makes me feel like maybe I could even do some of what you do. For all of you time and hard work ... Bless you Dave and Nick!

would be interesting to hear your story or if not hear it, and what area it took place, time of day , if at night was it a moonlit night?, type of ground it happened on?, was it close to a boulder field or river?, I think anyone who has spent any amount of time in the wild has had something similar happen to them at one time or another, its just that we tend to just say to ourselves it was just our imagination or in our heads, stay safe in the woods.

@@JohnDoe-ee6qs Ok.. This happened about 18 years ago. I was staying with my daughter. They lived out in the middle of now where. I would say closest neighbor was 2 miles away. They lived on a farmstead surrounded by corn fields and the yard was entirely fenced off from the fields. This was in Aug. so the corn was quite high. It was evening and I went outside with their Golden Retriever to potty and enjoy the evening. As we were sitting on the front porch, with the light on .. like Dave said .... everything went dead still. The dog started growling and looking towards the south field. Usually if it were an animal we would hear it rustling in the corn but there was nothing! The dog hesitantly went to the middle of the yard, about half way to the corn field growling and barking and then turned around and came back to me. She did that at least 4 times. She loved to go into the field and would come back dragging a stalk of corn to eat but that night she would not go close to the field. Needless to say the hair was standing up all over me and the dog and I had that sick feeling in my stomach that something was not right. Whatever was in that field never showed itself nor did it make a sound, but the frogs and crickets never made a peep the whole time. I was the only one home that evening ... of course! LOL I took the dog into the house, which was usually not allowed and we sat quietly in the dark. Once we were inside the feelings went away and the critters resumed their evening songs. I don't spook very easily but there was something there that did not belong there. It never happened again that summer. I forgot to mention there was a small creek down the hill from the farmstead but no rocky ground. I know, not as good as Dave's story, but I DO know how he must have felt and why he won't go back there. Thanks for letting me share.

I had a somewhat similar story Dave......I live in Ohio and decided to go by myself out camping and took my terrier with me. Dark set in and I was laying there and enjoying the sound of the crickets. I was thinking how uncomfortable I was because I was trying out a pad to sleep on and it just wasn't working. My dog was laying at my feet and he started a low growl and was looking out in the woods.....I started to shrug it off but then I realized......not one cricket sound, it was dead quiet. I had never camped there before. And I waited to see if maybe I would here some familiar sounds and my dog started growling again. Yep.....I'm gone. And at 49 yrs old. Feel stupid later a little but......something just didn't feel right.

Being that it moved gracefully, I would say it was a cat, probably a big one. I think what’s most eerie about the story is that Dave is a very credible guy and personality. So I have no doubt in my mind that the story is absolutely, hundred percent true. That makes it more concerning.
When I go camping, especially out in the wilderness or in the country, I always have to carry a firearm. I’m licensed to carry and of course the hope is that I will never have to use that firearm, but man with the wild hogs and cats here in TX, I just can’t take the chance.

Great vid. Love the rolled denim idea. There's nothing like a nice cup of coffee in the wilderness. If you spend enough time in the woods alone, strange things will occur. I'm a Georgia hunter, camper, explorer, spent many a night alone and content. One time in Swallow Creek Wilderness, on a 'dream come true' camping adventure in a blizzard, I was overcome with a feeling that I should pack up and leave, NOW! I fought the feeling, but was so overcome emotionally, so strange. Then I realized that sometimes our feelings are trying to tell us something and should be listened to. I packed up and left. Never had that happen before or since. We do not know everything that is going on out there, and should be humble enough to realize that. Keep up the good work, Dave.

We all became dead quiet as it quietly approached. I had set my plate in stump beside me. The Linx walked up and ate the burger off my plate, walked to someon else, and ate their burger. It then walked about three feet out from our circle, and laid down. We all sat staring at each other, not daring to talk or move, even to scared to add woid to the fire. Finally 30 minutes later ( seemed like longer), it got up and left. We all sighed with relief and still talk about that campout weekend to this day.

Dave - I had a number of similar experiences in the Sierra Nevadas where I live. My first one happened at age 13 and I was literally herded out of a Feather River stream in the summertime by something large that was on the opposite side of the stream I was fishing. It would occasionally be seen as a large black shape moving from tree to tree and I had to walk out because running there is suicidal with the way the canyon I was in is situated. I had that same feeling of being watched in woods I knew like the back of my hand and all the forest noises just STOPPED just as I had caught a nice rainbow trout. It paced me out for a good mile and just as I got to the meeting spot for my other family, the feeling left, the sounds returned to normal and I rounded the bend to see my mother cleaning her trout. I *know* what bears, mountain lions and every other Sierra critter looks like, but this thing stood on two legs and FOLLOWED ME. Many other people have had the experience you had Dave. You are not nuts nor was it your imagination. You told your story and didn't try to say you knew what it was. You just told it as you saw it and that is the mark of an honest and real story with credibility. I kinda know it. I was 9 years old and walking home from a daytime caving wander along the James river in Virginia. Nothing new during the wander until everything changed. Suddenly no wind or insects and no birds. I stopped for a moment and looked around and figured it was just short of nightfall.
I crossed the railroad tracks and went up a hill and the wind started blowing up my back. Still no nature noises. I looked back and up in a tree there were two blood red eyes staring at me. Could have been an owl but they do not normally stop insects from their Nature. I walked at a higher pace for about 50 yards and looked back...blood eyes were still following me in a different tree.
Time to run back to the burg. Owls do not stalk people. Panic is a good when you need better night vision to jump tree limbs in the darkness...your mileage may vary.

Almost a ghost town now but I remember growing up walking through the woods at an early age with my ben pearson recurve bow best days of my life. Ive encountered black bear even saw a black panther once. Never anything like what you did.

David, thanks for sharing your tale of your night in that scary place.I have had a similar experience years ago with my father while fishing a back woods pond at night ,five miles from nowhere. We heard a scream of a animal, like no animal I have ever heard or will ever hear again! We did what you did Dave we got out of there. I have never been back to that place and never will. I still spend most of my time in the great outdoors, but that place belongs to it or whatever. Thanks for sharing David.

You are a wonderful story teller, enjoy heaps your rambling style of making video.
I am an old guy, 83 in a couple of weeks, and I live in New Zealand, born and bred, but spent a couple of years in the states, sometime at the end of the seventies. First winter through to summer based in North Carolina and a year and a bit mostly in the Rockies, in Colorado. Took every chance to check the place out and spent a lot of nights outdoors alone loved it, especially if I had a fire.
Here at night the bush is a lot quieter, there are owls and a couple of other night birds, and you can hear animals moving around, noisy possums (no way related to your species) a sort of cat sized squirrel that is nocturnal, crashes around in the trees and has a raspy coughing call, noisy but no way a problem, though I remember the freak out the first time I heard it.. but nothing like the insect night show in your part of the world.
Just love your story, the way you told it and did not chop it about to make a standard formula.
I have had in all those years a couple of experiences I will never forget and no way can explain.
One was only a few seconds, and I was in the city, a place I knew well, old railyards, where I always took a shortcut, with my dog. He was a super mean dog, more like a tamed wild animal , given a chance he would head off, beat up a few dogs, scare shit out of the citizenry, probably the reason I quit life in town and came back full time usually ''off grid '' but now on the edge of a wee town.
But one morning, just doing an ordinary bit of a wander before breakfast and suddenly my dog froze. He stood in front of me staring at nothing I could not see and we quietly backed out of there. That was forty years ago, and lasted no more than a couple of minutes, but even now my body changes as I write about it. A part of it was knowing what a hard out dog he was , and he was being staunch but he was seriously wired that morning.
I had something like yours just once as a young fella, wont do the details but I just told myself to just keep walking.
BTW I have known big leafy trees to come down like that, lots of leaves moving, sounding like the wind, but without any sound on impact.
Love your approach, man, keep it up.

Glad you made it off Johns Mtn! A few decades ago, someone I've known all my life, was out camping in the forests of N. California with a few friends. All of them were very experienced hikers, campers, hunters, and they knew all the sounds that animals make, and could track pretty well. One night it got all quiet, then off in the not so far distance they heard a shriek of some sort of animal that they had never heard before, and it wasnt any one friend playing a joke on the others, as they were all around the campfire. From what I remember him saying, it sounded a couple of more times, then it was quiet again. Eventually the forest noises came back, but none of them slept that night. They packed up camp next morning, and set out to find any tracks in the direction the sound had come from, but found nothing. It was quite a while before they went camping again. These are strong guys used to Bushcraft, and yet they were all rattled. Never did find out what it was, and my friend has listened to hundreds of recordings of all sorts of animals, has never heard that sound again.

I just finished listening to Spirit Forest talk about black bears and that is what it sounded like visited the trees in your camp that night. It could have had it's nest in the trees above your camp and was just coming home to sleep. That was the one thing she talked about that made me think it was a black bear; that they can climb trees like a cat and I saw a video of them nesting in the trees. That was an amazing video! I can't tell you who published that one. Anyway, a black bear, possibly. They can walk around without you even knowing they are there if there wasn't any leaves. The leaves rustling made me think of how they would sound. They are stealthy when they move! OK, let me know what you think... I just started watching your channel based on a parody that "Girl in the Woods", Brooke Whipple did on her channel a while back. Thank you for the story and the chance to watch you on CZcams. Great video Dave. I have a similar story to yours. It was the mid 70’s and I was about 12 years old. A couple of friends of mine and myself had a camping spot on one of my buddy’s family’s land. It was a warm summer night. A beautiful clear night and we decided to camp in a clearing with no tarps or tents so we could lay by the fire and watch the stars (back when you could see the stars). It was about 11:30pm. We were all in our sleeping bags looking up and cutting up as teenage boys do when all of a sudden some of the stars started to move. We all lived near an Air Force base and a very large commercial airport so we knew what airplanes looked like at night, the navigation lights and the flight patterns, etc... These “stars” were not conventional aircraft. They were moving in swirling motions, often making abrupt directional changes at very high speeds and what seemed to be very high altitudes. Like you we were listening to the sounds of the woods then when the event started it was deathly silent. We observed this for about 20 to 25 minutes when we observed the objects (maybe 15 to 20 of them) gather into a formation and shoot off at a very high rate of speed to the north west. Then, as with you, the sound of the woods came back. We were all so scared and with out saying a word to one another put out our fire, gathered what ever we could easily carry without packing and ran about 1/4 mile back to my friend’s folks house in the pitch black. By the time we got to the house we were all pretty much boarder line hysterical. We immediately told his folks about it and in the morning when I went home I told my folks about it as well. My family just laughed it off and almost convinced me I hadn’t seen what I thought I’d seen. That is until the next day when it was reported all over the TV news as well as our area news papers that a massive UFO sighting had been reported over about a 300 mile long area stretching from north central Texas thru southern Oklahoma and across to the Texas Panhandle making it one of the largest mass UFO sightings in the history of the state of Texas. It was big news. No one could explain what it was we all witnessed. Still to this day. Over 40 years and it’s still a unsolved case. I’m not one of these tin foil hat UFO folks and I never tell people this story because I know they’ll be skeptical of me. Heck...I’d be skeptical too if it hadn’t happened to me. I’m telling my story here because I believe what ever happened to you was real. I know some people have probably laughed you off too but I understand weird stuff happens and I know what that feeling that you experienced feels like. I don’t blame you for not going back. It took a long, long time for me to feel comfortable camping after my experience but I’m glad you and I got over it because like you I’ve had some really great times in the woods with my family and now my kids. Thanks for sharing and Happy Easter.

Ah, my friend, on Johns Mountain you may have run into the Little People. Not the Leprechauns of Ireland or the Mushroom Men of Russia, but the Little People who have inhabited the Americas far back before history began. You were on traditional Cherokee lands, so those you encountered are named Yunwi Tsundi.
I have encountered them in the woods and swamps of Mississippi - traditional Choctaw lands - where their name is Kowi Anukasha, or Kwanokasha for short. I also encountered them on traditional Chippewa/Ojibwe lands, where they are named Maymaygwashi.
The things you describe are so very much like them.

Don't forget there is mounting evidence of human occupation of the Americas going back literally 10 times the native American presence. Native Americans are relative new comers to the land. So what dwelt here before, has the potential to be truly ancient.
So what happened when you came across the Kwanokasha?

Dave, this is my first comment to any you tube channel and really big monkey is the only channel i subscribe to. Its good to see a good southern boy sharing life in a fine part of the country. Concerning coffee...90% of the coffee I drink comes from a french press,,, it really is the best way to make coffee. You might try to brew it the way I was taught..1) Boil the water 2) remove the pot for the fire. 3)add the ground (or crushed) coffee beans & stir 4)cover the pot and let the coffee steep for 4 minutes (not 3 or 5...4 minutes, count the seconds if you don't have a watch). 5)press the grounds down. 6)pour and enjoy.. Be good to yourself, Paule

I can't say for 100% certain that Sasquatch is real. I do think there's something to it. What if it was something else? David Paulides himself has never said that any one thing is responsible. I’ve spent a total of years on that mountain in my life. Grew up on the mountain hunting, fishing, camping, hiking. Beautiful place and always gives me that feeling of home.
As far as the story goes, sounds like you met a local mountain lion. Big enough to make a noise, graceful enough to not make a racket. Only thing outside of an ape that could go through the trees like that and we don’t have those up here.
Given the time period also, few lions on fort mountain area around then as well as in the general area you were in. Spotted a large female myself just a few years later down the road a piece from where you were at...which by the sound of it I believe I know just where you were at.
Lastly, if my assumption is correct, if you hadn’t had that fire going you probably would have been tested if not became a meal. I recommend you get some good gen 3+ NVG and maybe some thermal. No more creepy feeling in the woods at night, you are the man then. Haha
Keep doing the outdoors thing man, these kids today are missing out and don’t even know it. Taking my son up to close to that area today, which is how I found your video we were looking at some seeing if I could spot the area I’m taking him.

I had to listen to the story twice. It gave me the chills when you said it climbed down the tree and was following you. The only animals that I have witnessed climbing trees to spy on you is raccoons and black bears. I've had black bears approach me at night also, but for the most part they run away if you make a single sound. Your story reminds me of something hunting you, like a cat. I have only saw two bobcats (TN), and they were super skittish.
I have only been terrified in the woods twice. The first time I was with a friend and hiking at night towards a camp spot. I yelled back to him to hurry along. At that exact moment, something large fell/jumped from the canopy above me. It broke limbs and crashed into the brush like a bomb going off. I have absolutely no idea what it was, but it sounded like an elephant thrashing around in that brush pile. I heard my friend scream and saw him take off before I could react. My fight or flight kicked in and flight won over. The thought of camping was gone as we ran to the truck. We drove home and debated if that was a sasquatch, bear, or deranged human hopped up on meth.
Second time, was when I was a teenager. I had no idea what a red fox sounded like when it screams. I was out there in the wild camping, and at about midnight they started up screaming very close to my camp. I thought a coven of witches had surrounded me and were about to sacrifice me. I just laid there in my tent waiting to die as I clutched my knife.
Also, lol at that inch worm on your shoulder looks like it's listening to you @37:35.

Great story. Man seems like a few guys I know over the years this kinda thing happens to. Similar story myself when I was living in north Missippi, cousin fell asleep and did not pick me up from a late shift bouncing at a bar. I had to walk home into deep country. Gravel roads, no lights but the stars between the trees to keep me on the path. Could not see my hand in front of my face. Great. Well its 5-6 miles in so I got started. After about half an hour I had similar feeling and realized no insects or night noises. I started feeling like I was being watched. I knew farmer had cows in a pasture to my left but I heard no cattle and they almost never came to the fence line as there was thick trees and bushes. After about 10min of feeling spooked I kept thinking its in my head but at the same time why no night noises? Then I heard the rustling. No stops like cows or a deer, but just leaves rustling and the noise was roughly staying on my left where the pasture was. Finally I couldn't stand it anymore because I knew if it was a mountain lion or something that wanted me I was going to get it. All I had was a pocket knife and I had it out already but reality is that was a scratcher not a killer. I kinda snapped and just started singing real loud. Random songs making up words and sounding like a crazy person. The rustle stopped for a moment then followed me farther away. Finally after another 10min nothing and the noises came back. To this day Ill never walk down that road again without a bright lamp and gun and probably a truck. I told some guys and they said was probably a cougar and maybe they are right. But I knew that night I was not high on the food chain and I lit into my cousin the next morning. Yours is crazy because the travel through the trees. But that rustle and the feeling of something here is really wrong. When you know you know. Time to go.

I will never forget a similar experience that I had when I was about 9 or 10. It was late spring one day in the early afternoon in the woods of Gloucester County, New jersey. I was alone, sitting on a felled tree across a creek called the Gravelly Run. I noticed that the woods went absolutely silent and had the feeling I was being watched, but I couldn't see anything around me, but the trees. The hairs went went up on the back of my neck and the only thing I could think of was to leave - IMMEDIATELY. To this day, more than 50 years later, I still don't know what happened. Back then, we had no idea of bigfoot, but we did have the Jersey Devil and my brother told me that's what was looking at me. Well, when you're 9 or 10, that made more sense than anything else. Thinking back on it now, it's the same feeling I get when I see Hillary Clinton. There are things in the woods..... Great video, Dave! - Doc Tom

Here's my technique for making coffee with my french press in the woods, and it works extremely well! Boil the water first in the pot, then add the coffee and let it take the high heat away from the water, and let it sit for a minute then put the lid with the plunger on the press. plunge it down so all the coffee is just barely under all the water and wait a five minutes to let it steep. Push the plunger down and pour the coffee off into your drinking cup, and enjoy! Give it a try Dave, I usually get a good and strong cup of coffee that is not bitter at all! If you want it even darker extend the steep time! cheers! love the video!

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  Před 5 lety

@@Reallybigmonkey1 no coffee beans, only ground coffee goes in the press. After about 1 minute the boiling water has cooled some and I only put the plunger in to get all the grounds soaked slightly under the water, then it will fully steep in all the water for about 5 minutes or a little more the last thing you wanna do before pouring is plunge it to the bottom. Anyway it's just how I do it and works really well for me. whatever works for you is awesome as long as you enjoy the coffee is the main thing! love your videos all of them.

Thanks for sharing that story, Dave. It reminds me of one my father told about when he was up in the Cascades, here prospecting. (You always had to take him with a grain of salt, though. He had a rich imagination full of projects he would start but seldom finish. He did pan and dredge for gold, and he was successful at finding some. Some. But where the reality of the experience diverged from what he related is a matter of conjecture.) He was by a stream to cool off and get some water when the forest got quiet. He couldn't see anything, but he gradually became convinced that "she" was watching him from across the gorge. ...
That WoodKnot cup looks interesting. However, I would not ever, EVER put the coffee in the water to bring to a boil. (Unless, perhaps, I was at a high elevation.) The oils that give the coffee its flavor are too delicate. If I had that press, I would bring the water to a boil, take it off the grill for just a bit, and let it cool before adding the grounds. At home, I pour the slightly cooled water from the pot onto the grounds in the press. It varies a bit from bean to bean, but coffee should be brewed between 195°F and 205°F. It does not take long to cool to the proper range. You let the 'bloom' form and give it 5-10 minutes before you press it.
The rolled charcloth reminds me of one of the other Dave's ideas from the old days: a coiled, round rope-like wick with a short length of metal tube at one end. You extrude the charred end to catch your spark and stick the whole end into your bird's nest. When you have gotten you flame, you pull the wick back into the tube where it is extinguished but is ready for the next time.

Its a strange thing when the woods go quite, a memory of a place Ive camped a few times , I visited to go make some coffee and do some watercolour painting of the ferns and small brook, that afternoon I felt something strange, watching holding my breath not moving trying to focus in the cover of fallen branches and ferns. I sat their quietly still not seeing anything but feeling some sort of presence I could smell perfume. That was it , time stood still as if in a dream trying to run. I packed up my stuff and got out of that wood. Ive been back with a friend one night but we dont camp their anymore, that part of the woods just has a very strange feel to it. I once spent a night way out in the western wilderness when something walked circles around the camp all night, making some truly hideous sounds. I was twenty miles from anywhere as the crow flies, and thirty by trail, so I couldn't leave. But I had a rifle, plenty of wood, so I built the fire up and sat cross-legged all night with my back to the fire. There's more, and scarier parts to this story that happened a moth or so later, but I won't go into it.
The Walmart knife looks a lot like a Mora, but the steel it's made from is nowhere near as good. It's cheap steel in the worst sense of the sord "cheap". The amazing thing about Mora knives is that they are cheap, AND are made from quality steel, whether it's the high carbon or the stainless. I'm not at all fond of some of the newer "bushcraft" Mora knives because I thing you're paying several times the money for the same blades and certainly the same steel, Anyway, I have eight, maybe nine, high carbon Mora knives, and four stainless when one of the has to live around water. Oh, and two stainless Moras that stay in a kitchen drawer because my wife uses them for everything.
I don't use charcloth because the frontiersmen didn't, and because natural char is abundant. But that sure looks like a good way to use charcloth. Clever.
Never did like French Press coffee. It always seems too weak or too cold. On a full camping trip with several friends, I just carry a coffeepot and make coffee the same way people have been doing for a couple of hundred years. When alone, or with one friend, I'll either dump coffee grounds into the water, bring it to a boil, and then pour it through a filter, or I'll use one of those single cup filters that you set over your cup, put grounds in, and then pour boiling water through it. Makes a great single cup.
I've found coffee recipes from the wild west period that say to never let it boil more than two minutes. Some say one minute. What matters to me is that it's boiling when it goes into my cup.
Anyway, nothing boring about that story, but it brought back some memories that might stop me from doing any solo camping for a while. That happened to me forty-eight years ago, and it still makes me half afraid to camp solo when I think about it. Anyway, the part about it going through the trees over your head, and then the huge tree shaking as you looked back was very, very scary.
